Annual Recognition Luncheon

Passing of Dedicated Volunteer

Lovis Reuss

On May 22nd, we lost one of our most dedicated office volunteers of past years. Lovis' version of volunteerism seemed to have few bounds.

She joined us in 1995, at the age of 70. In the office, she helped with mailings, the time log and answering the phone. For several years, Lovis personally delivered tutor training posters to libraries and churches all over the county.

Her support was further demonstrated when she became housebound.  Lovis requested that she continue to complete program paperwork and time log information from home. For events like the Spelling Bee, annual picnic and annual Recognition Luncheon, she put her creative and crafting skills to work, with centerpieces, menus, signage, and name tags.

We are grateful for the 15 years she shared her time, energy and talent to help LDP serve adult learners.

WELCOME NEW BOARD MEMBER

Terry

Thomasson

Terry was a teacher for over 5 years, during which he taught, English, History, and Math in St. Louis, Chicago, and China.

He is currently a sales representative with Graybar Electric and lives in Naperville with his wife.

While teaching in China, he gained a first-hand understanding of the difficulty that English language learners have.

He is interested in being a board member because he sees the population trends that have been taking place over the last decade or so and that they'll continue, leading to a greater need for English tutoring to help both DuPage County and it's citizens to remain successful.

A Word About Our Library Partners

Be sure to take a look at the Adult ESL and Basic Literacy collections in your library. Each partner library supports Literacy DuPage, not only by providing space for tutoring, but also with specially purchased instructional materials (books, DVD's, and audio) that circulate and are available to use with your student or for your professional development. Many libraries have one or more computer workstations loaded with ESL and Basic Literacy software.

Take a moment to acquaint yourself and your student with the rich materials collection in your library!

  Sonia 2013
Sonia Realized Her
Lifelong Dream!

"I love America. All the time I think of America as a big mother with her arms open to welcome all the people," says Sonia.

After arriving in the U.S. 17 years ago, Sonia wanted to learn English but the demands of taking care of children and grandchildren prevented her from taking classes. In January 2011 she began to meet with her Literacy DuPage tutor, Evelyn.

She met with her tutor for two hours a week, completed her homework, attended English Conversation Groups at her library, and learned about the United States government and history.  For two years, her husband faithfully drove her to the library for her tutoring sessions. In March she passed her Citizenship test.

Evelyn, Sonia's tutor, says it has been very rewarding to help Sonia develop her comprehension, speaking, reading and writing skills and to be part of the achievement of her goal to become a U.S. citizen. "It's delightful to see her progress! Such a blessing. In the process we developed a friendship, and we both look forward to the weekly meetings. American volunteers can give this gift of learning English to immigrants to integrate them more fully in the community and provide the foundation and building blocks for lifelong learning. That's satisfying."

Sonia has achieved other goals, but to become a U.S. citizen has been her lifelong goal. She was sworn in at a ceremony on Tuesday, April 2, 2013, with her husband, Evelyn, and Evelyn's husband in attendance. "It's the top feeling!" Sonia exclaimed.

Over $5,500 Raised To Help Adult Learners

On April 27, Literacy DuPage participated with other non-profit organizations by walking and running in the 5K Human Race sponsored by Giving DuPage.  We are grateful for the 55 participants and for the hundreds of generous donors who sponsored our participants.

  Tutoring Tips    Speaking and Listening

Adult learners who are ESL and Basic Education students, have many opportunities for listening and speaking in English as they interact at work, with family members, community members and students. Some listening is non-face-to-face, such as listening on the phone or to the radio. Most listening, however, combines short bursts of face-to face listening interspersed with speaking - for example: discussions in the workplace, social conversations with neighbors and colleagues, and conversations with service providers such as: nurses, doctors, social workers, store clerks, school staff and public safety officers.

In each context, learners have a purpose for listening and a communication task. Listeners may listen to obtain facts or understand the main idea. They may need to distinguish question words and respond appropriately. They may need to follow directions or advice. Adults learners may need to distinguish facts from opinions or express their own point of view. They may need to relate what they hear to visual materials they are looking at or have seen. They may want to connect with other people by sharing personal stories.

Many factors can interfere with listening and speaking which creates confusions and miscommunications. Misheard sounds and pronunciation errors, inappropriate words choices or wrongly-used grammatical forms can lead to communication breakdowns. Breakdowns can have significant consequences - embarrassment, unintended offense, missed appointments, inaccurate processes, etc.

The following activity helps students communicate in their daily lives in order to exchange information, engage in social interactions and to talk about themselves and learn about others.

Objective:

Review familiar vocabulary and phrases to state a preference and provide a reason.

Procedure:

Snowman

Create a deck of 10-15 cards on which are written familiar vocabulary and phrases of things people like/don't like and/or like/don't like to do

( Examples: snow, to drive, my neighbors, ice cream, dogs, clean the refrigerator, my job, fast food, my child's school, thunderstorms, etc). Below the word of phrase, include the words "Why?" and "Why not?" For your student model drawing a card, reading it out loud and responding. The learner draws a card, makes a statement about themselves and then asks their partner for a response. "I like snow in the winter because I like to make snowmen. What about you Nancy? "No I don't." "Why not?" "I don't like snow because it is too cold. Also the streets are dangerous." Encourage your learner to state 2-3 reasons for each preference.    Ice Cream Cones
