Tutoring Tips Reading

 Pre-Reading - A Key Activity

Print is everywhere. Imagine how difficult it can be for our learners to access the abundance of printed material that comes their way: bills, junk mail, school materials, advertisements, work instructions, schedules. Reading, like listening and speaking, is interactive in nature and open to various interpretations. A text does not just transmit information. It involves information going from the text to the reader and back. A text means something different to each of us because of what we bring to it. The ways we read a text depend on prior knowledge, our needs, expectations, the context in which we are reading, as well as our own interpretations, experiences and culture.

The first stage of a reading lesson is Pre-Reading. The objective of this activity is to get the learner thinking about and talking about the content of what they are about to read. This will enable them to connect their background knowledge to that reading, anticipate content and facilitate comprehension of the reading passage.

For example when getting ready to read a story such as "At the pharmacy", you would:

* Spend time first talking about the story, perhaps retelling it or telling a similar story.
* Relate a brief true story about an experience you had. For example, "My sister had a bad cough. The doctor gave her a prescription, etc."
* Illustrate your story with real-life items, pictures (Picture Dictionary) or drawings.
* Ask questions to put the reader into the story - When did you last go to the pharmacy? Why did you go there?
* Look at a picture of a pharmacy and discuss it.
* Ask the learner to guess or predict what happens in the story about the pharmacy.

Here are some other ideas for pre-reading activities:

* Construct a semantic web showing what they already know about the topic.
* Read the title of the selection aloud, and ask the learner to predict what they think it will be about.
* Use a sentence completion activity to generate discussion. For a reading selection about taking a walk, you could ask the learner to complete the following sentence: "My favorite place to walk is ....... because....."
* Set a purpose for the reading by asking the learner to find the answer to a specific question as they read.
