Greetings!
Celebrating the Gift of a Lifetime and 40 years of providing successful one-to-one tutoring to adult students, this newsletter highlights our annual recognition luncheon held on October 20, 2012, with more than 300 attendees (representing six continents) - partners, volunteers, staff, and students were applauded for their achievements.
In honor of Literacy DuPage's 40th anniversary, President and CEO of ProLiteracy, David Harvey came to celebrate with the attendees as keynote speaker. "This is an enormous resource to our country," said Harvey. "As a long-standing organizational member of ProLiteracy, Literacy DuPage has, for many decades, transformed the lives of adult learners through passion, energy, and great commitment to our cause. I am so pleased to recognize Literacy DuPage for its tremendous efforts and leadership."
We appreciate your partnership in 2012 and wish you a prosperous New Year!
Happy Holidays,
Tana Tatnall, Executive Director
Carol Garcia, Program Director
P.S. Save the date of April 27 to participate on the Laps for Literacy Team in The Human Race sponsored by Giving DuPage. The 5K Race and 2 mile fitness walk will be held at Esplanade at Locust Point in Downers Grove. Registration begins January 1.

Secretary of State
Illinois State Library
Community Partner of the Year
Literacy DuPage named the Secretary of State Illinois State Library the 2012 Community Partner of the Year. Accepting on their behalf was Cyndy Colletti, Literacy Program Manager, "As an adult educator and a librarian, I read. So I use other people's words to lead me. One of my favorite quotes is from Kofi Annan who said that 'Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope.' I am proud to work with literacy programs throughout Illinois that help adult learners cross that bridge."

Literacy DuPage received its first adult literacy grant in 1995 allowing the organization to increase staffing to begin collecting and reporting the results and benefits of the program. Since that time, the State Library has been the most vital partner for the organization each year. However, it's not just about the grant awards but also their oversight to help increase program effectiveness and integrity through rigorous reporting requirements making sure the grant awards are used wisely to increase the literacy skills of all adult learners served.

Tutoring Tips:
Listening Skills
Listening skills are perhaps one of the hardest things to teach to and learn for both native and non-native speakers of English. Your student(s) may comprehend a good portion of what they read and are able to write somewhat in English. ESL students, in particular, may get totally lost when it comes to understanding what an English speaker is saying during a conversation. The more all students learn to listen, the more they can begin to construct meaning and make sense of the words they hear. Listening to language helps them get used to its sounds, rhythm and intonation. This prepares them for using the language independently.
The following listening activity helps to foster concentration and attention to detail.
DICTACOMP
- Level: High Beginning - Advanced
- Skills: Listening, writing, reading, review, preview
Procedure:
1. Choose any short passage your student is familiar with and has previously read.
2. Show key words. Review their meaning and pronunciation.
3. Read the passage slowly while the student listens. The student is not looking at the passage. *
4. Read the passage again at a normal speed while the student takes notes about the content.*
5. Have the student rewrite the passage trying to get it as close to the original as possible. (Two or more students working together could complete this step collaboratively.)
6. Have the student read their passage out loud. Student reads aloud and may make corrections, additions, or deletions to the content.
7. Tutor reads the original passage again.
8. Student calls out when they hear something they had left out of their writing.
*Step 3 & 4: The passage may need to be read several times

New Board President

We welcome a new board president,
Paula Ledbetter Sellergren of Wheaton, succeeding Rick Lochner of Naperville, who served as board president since 2007.
"I'm honored to serve as board president of this premier not-for-profit organization; and I'm fortunate to have such talented staff, board members, and volunteers working alongside me," says Sellergren. "We will continue the great strides that have taken place during the past several years. We will also look for new and innovative ways to increase Literacy DuPage's visibility throughout DuPage County."
