Happy 90th Birthday!
We want to wish a wonderful 90th birthday to our founder, Dr. Harry Wachs. Dr. Wachs served as a mentor to Dr. Zeller, Dr. Green, and our Vision Therapy manager, Matt Hiller, COVT. He is a pioneer in visuo-cognitive therapy, developing many unique strategies for helping children with visual-spatial or visual-perceptual challenges.
Have a great day!

Computers, Tablets & Smart Phones, Oh My!
While it's hard to imagine life without computers, tablets, smart phones and gaming systems, parents need to pay attention to the amount of time spent using these devices with regard to vision and vision development.
For children ages 3 - 5, Drs. Zeller and Green recommend no more than 1 hour a day on computers and digital devices. For children 6-12, limit it to 2 hours a day.
Too much screen time can have a negative effect, such as lower grades, increased nearsightedness, and risk of Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). CVS is a condition that can cause back and neck strain, dry eyes, double or blurred vision and even headaches.
The next concern with children is how close the screen is to their eyes. Many kids will hold smart phones and tablets as close as 6 inches, which is too close. Ideally you want the arms to be L-shaped similar to the photo above.
Use the 20:20:20 rule and take a break every 20 minutes and look 20 feet away for 20 seconds to prevent vision problems. Parents should watch for:
▪ Squinting
▪ Frequent eye rubbing, blinking, or red eyes
▪ Head turns or avoidance of the computer
▪ Close working distance

20/20 Isn't Everything -
A child's vision is critical to learning

|
|
As your child is busily enjoying summer activities such as ball sports and games, it is a good time to pay attention to what he or she has trouble doing. | PSA: Sports Performance and Vision Disorders (30 sec) |
Problems catching or hitting balls, or with shooting baskets, clumsiness with certain physical activities, avoidance of reading, or trouble with 3D movies or games are all clues that your child may have a vision problem that can be resolved. Some signs that a vision problem, rather than lack of practice, may be interfering with performance: - Inability to see the ball clearly
- Difficulty knowing where the ball is, or where other players are at times
- Over or under-estimating the distance of the ball, players or boundaries
- Great athlete but poor at ball sports
- Not much improvement with practice
- Having trouble remembering plays
- Discomfort/dizziness/no depth with 3D Movies
Seeing "20/20" is just one of 17 visual skills critical to playing sports, reading and learning. The good news: Once a vision problem of this nature is detected, it is usually 100% correctable. Give us a call at (301) 951-0320 or request an appointment online.

An Important Message for Parents of Kids who Play Soccer and Football
When your daughter is on the soccer field heading a ball, she may help win the game, but she may actually be hurting her brain. While most parents know that their child is at risk of a head injury when playing football, a lot of people don't know that head injuries can occur even with a helmet from the impact. Also, soccer is also one of the top sports that can also result in head injuries.
A recent study found that 85% of concussions go undiagnosed... read the rest of the article.
If you or your child has had a blow to the head or is experiencing symptoms consistent with a concussion, call (301) 951-0320 or request an appointment online today. We are here to help!
