Too Much Holiday? Kids Driving You Crazy?
Brain Gym exercises are a great way to de-stress (for all of us, kids and parents alike). They can act like a nice reset button and help us get our brains back online for work and school both. Brain Gym exercises can also be used to get centered and focused at the beginning of any task requiring concentration, such as homework or home vision therapy activities. Journalist Jane Alexander has some nice instructions on her blog. Is it ADHD? Or a Vision Problem?
The New York Times recently published a very interesting article ( The Selling of Attention Deficit Disorder) describing the seemingly epidemic proportions of Americans being labeled "ADHD" and prescribed powerful stimulant drugs. Dr. Keith Conners, ADHD specialist and author of the Conners Rating Scale, "called [the rising rates of diagnosis]
'a national disaster of dangerous proportions. The numbers make it look like an epidemic. Well, it's not. It's preposterous... This is a concoction to justify the giving out of medication at unprecedented and unjustifiable levels.' "
What most people don't realize is that ADHD-like symptoms can frequently have other causes. For example, 12 of the 18 diagnostic criteria for ADHD are also seen in children and adults with Learning Related Vision Problems. (See the full-size chart here.)
So if you or your child have been labeled ADHD, your challenges may actually have a source that can be treated or cured without a lifetime of dangerous medication. Ask Dr. Green or Dr. Zeller today for more information. |
