"If binocular coordination is learned, then we may need to view some visual behaviors differently."
-- Sue Barry
How do we control our eyes? Are we hard-wired to only use them together, or can we learn to control them individually? In this article and accompanying video ( Busker's eye-opening trick defies science: Busker does the impossible with eyes), it seems that scientists are amazed to see this performer doing his "stupid eye trick". Guess what-- it's not that hard. If you ask nicely, Dr. Zeller will demonstrate.

Help Us Spread the Word About Vision and Learning!
The College of Optometrists in Vision Development (COVD) is helping to educate the public about the link between vision and learning.
At the VCDC, we are doing the same- Dr. Green and Dr. Zeller are available for free lectures at schools, PTA meetings, and other venues to spread the word about the link between vision and learning.

April is National Autism Awareness Month

"Unfortunately, I'm unable to attend [Dr. Wachs' and Dr. Wieder's book signing] but would like to send my best wishes to Harry Wachs, who saw my daughter, SE, for 9 years. Along with Dr. Zeller, Matt, and others in the office, he helped her tremendously. Although not cured of autism, SE is now a junior at Pace University with a 3.4 average and a merit scholarship. (She already has an Associate's Degree, cum laude, from Landmark College). We are keeping our fingers crossed that she will graduate in May of 2014. You guys all played a big role in helping my daughter go beyond what others thought possible.
Thanks for your help.
ME"
Vision difficulties are common in children who are on the autism spectrum. Eye turns and Lazy Eye appear more frequently than in the general population, and more subtle visual issues are also more common. Some of the signs include:
 | Floortime Study Video |
Fortunately, we can help remediate all of these problems through vision therapy. Dr. Green is a DIR-FCD Certified Profectum Professional in Developmental Optometry, Intermediate DIRŪ Floortime provider, as well as a Developmental Optometrist. Floortime is a play-based program of autism intervention that was developed by Dr. Serena Wieder and the late Dr. Stanley Greenspan. There is new research out of York University in Canada demonstrating how Floortime works to change the brains of autistic children. Video here.
