Amblyopia: What Parents Need to Know
Eyes on the Brain

Neurologist Sue Barry discusses vision and the brain. Her book
is now available as an audiobook.

Doing math in your head has many benefits, including improved scores on tests like the SAT. Students who are able to visualize effectively are more likely to understand the key concepts
taking place, and can apply those concepts no matter how the questions are posed.

Doubling a recipe, calculating a tip, or understanding finance charges are all everyday uses for math. Our program of Visuo-Cognitive Therapy helps develop the visualization and visual-perceptual skills that underlie mathematical thinking.

Does your child have difficulty understanding math concepts? Does she have difficulty turning word problems into equations? If so, we can help! Call us today at

Help Us Spread the Word About Vision and Learning!

COVD
The College of Optometrists in Vision Development (COVD) is helping to educate the public about the link between vision and learning.

At the VCDC, we are doing the same- Dr. Green and Dr. Zeller are available for free lectures
at schools, PTA meetings, and other venues to spread the word about the link between vision and learning.

If you have a group who would benefit from a presentation, please email Canden@VisionTherapyDC.com to arrange the time and date!

Greetings!

Welcome to the February 2013 issue of Vision & Learning News. This year we are hosting an interesting variety of monthly lectures related to vision development and learning.

We are passionate about educating our patients and the public about the many ways that efficient vision helps us in our daily lives. If you know someone who could benefit from this information, please pass it along! It could make all the difference.
Double Vision After Brain Injury

Hillary Clinton's head injury has been all over the news, and she has been left with double vision and possibly other vision problems. The Fresnel prism she is wearing is a method of aligning the double images into a single one.

Did you know that Drs. Zeller and Green have training in vision rehabilitation?

Double vision and other vision problems are common after a head trauma, and can be caused by injury to the eye, nerves, or brain.

Some common symptoms after head injury include:
  • Words moving on the page
  • Trouble focusing on text
  • Light sensitivity
  • Vertigo or dizziness
  • Sensitivity to motion in the peripheral vision
  • Visual Field loss
  • Convergence problems
  • Headaches
  • Double vision
  • Visual Perceptual disturbances

For a more comprehensive list, see our Symptoms Checklist. VCDC doctors Zeller and Green are members of NORA (Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association) and can help you or your loved one recover from vision problems from stroke or brain injury.

Walter Payton "Man of the Year" Award Finalist Larry Fitzgerald is a Vision Therapy Success Story and Advocate

While Larry Fitzgerald was not chosen as the Walter Payton "Man of the Year", his impressive work on and off the field makes him our Man of the Year. Larry credits much of his success in the NFL on going through vision therapy as a young man.

"Fitzgerald explained that one of the keys to his success was having vision therapy as a child. He had a vision problem that was making it difficult to pay attention in school and his grandfather, Dr. Robert Johnson, a developmental optometrist in Chicago, Illinois, diagnosed the vision problem and the appropriate treatment.

"Even if you have been told your child has perfect vision or 20/20 vision, your child could still be at-risk of having a learning-related vision problem," warns Fitzgerald."

All too often, people find our office after suffering for years. If someone you know is struggling with a vision problem, please share that we can give him or her the tools for success.
