November 2012

Greetings!

The Random Act of Kindness movement has been a hit!  Throughout this past week, people have been performing Random Acts of Kindness for others and sharing their stories on the Facebook Kindness page.  Thank you to everyone who shared - it has been very inspiring.

Remember, we also want to hear from you if you received an act of kindness.  You never know - the person who did something kind for you may read your comment and you could make their day!

In addition to Facebook, we have also had people phone or visit our office and share their stories.  One of the most important messages we've heard is that the person performing the act of kindness feels just as good as the person who received the good deed. It's a two-for-one deal, you make someone else feel good and get feel good, yourself.

For those of you not able to access the Facebook Kindness page for any reason, please feel free to send us an e-mail or call our office at (780) 538-2820 and we will make sure it is posted for you.

On behalf of the Community Foundation, thank you to everyone for participating; from our sponsors, individuals, corporate teams and the many schools who have joined us.  Be sure to tell your friends, family, colleagues and anyone you know to help spread the word. Together, we can make the Peace region the kindest.

And remember to keep sharing your stories with us!

Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you. ~ Princess Diana

Warmest Wishes,

all for community

With the economy picking up in the Peace region we have become a very busy area.  I know my world has become quite hectic which also seems to be the case for most of the people I talk with.

Aside from these informal conversations, our community also said the same thing when we were putting together the 2011 Vital Signs document and again when we were developing the Smart & Caring Communities Fund.  You indicated you wanted to be more strongly connected to your community.

Since everything we do at the Community Foundation is for our communities, we thought we would do our part to help strengthen our region and work towards bringing us all closer together.  The first of our initiatives was the Random Act of Kindness day and the second was the Smart & Caring Communities Fund.  If this fund sounds familiar, you would have read about it in my message of last month's e-news issue of Community Landscape.

The Smart & Caring Communities fund is a very important tool that is available to anyone interested in helping their community both today and forever.  Most importantly, the fund is focussed on those areas that Peace region residents have indicated are important to them.  And with the upcoming holiday season, we are starting to hear from many organizations who want to share goodwill with others by giving back to the communities they do business in and where their employees live.

In other words, your organization has the opportunity to support the community that supports you in your daily working including your employees, subcontractors and even your own family.  How is this possible?  Donations made to this fund will remain with the fund forever, and will never be spent.  We invest the principle and use the earned interest to grant to charitable projects in our region.  And the more the fund grows, the larger the grants and the more of an impact you will have in your communities.  It's that simple.

To learn more about this great tool, give me a call and I would be happy to come by to talk with you, to present to your employees, Social/Christmas committees, or community/stakeholders advisors.  We also have materials to share.  Just call the office at (780) 538-2820 and let me know you're interested.  Or, you can send an e-mail.

It's Official!
Both the City of Grande Prairie and the County of Grande Prairie No. 1 proclaimed November 9 to be Random Act of Kindness Day and we were there with our capture the moment.

(l-r) Leonard Scharbach - Chair of the Community Foundation Board of Directors and myself (Tracey Vavrek - Executive Director of the Community Foundation) listen to Mayor Bill Given as he reads the proclamation declaring November 9th to be Random Act of Kindness Day om Grande Prairie.  The picture was taken in the parking lot of the Grande Prairie Public Library.
Right after he read the proclamation, Mayor Given put a quarter in the parking meter because it had almost expired.   Following that, Leonard brushed the car off because it was all covered with snow.  (We sure had a lot that day - 10 centimeters!)

(l-r) Reeve Leanne Beaupre and I signed the proclamation declaring November 9th to be Random Act of Kindness Day in the County.  We did it in their very beautiful council chambers during their monthly meeting.  They kindly moved us to the top of the agenda as we were originally 8th on the list.  Very thoughtful!

I don't remember what Reeve Beaupre and I were laughing at but this sure is a nice picture and I wanted to share it with you.

Random Act of Kindness - On the Little Screen
Over
Leah Price was interviewed by Tanya Blakney of Eastlink TV.  Although she was a little nervous, you never would have known.  She did a great job.  Way to go, Leah!
the past few weeks Leah Price, Administrative Director at the Community Foundation office, and I went out into Grande Prairie to do our own Random Acts of Kindness.  The response was very heartwarming.

We were accompanied by Tanya Blakney who is a producer at our local television station - Eastlink TV. Tanya, who is also a member of the Random Act of Kindness Day planning committee, did an interview with Leah.

Together, Leah, Tanya and I had a lot of fun.  Take a peek and see.

Thank you

The success of this program is the result of everyone performing Random Acts of Kindness, our sponsors, volunteers as well as those organizations hosting Random Act of Kindness information on their social media and website pages.  This initiative is so successful because of the support and participation of each one of you and we thank you.

I would also like to take the opportunity to thank our sponsors who helped make Random Act of Kindness a reality.
