Prayer & Fasting - Day 10
Romans 8:13 NIV
"For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live."

Day 10: Midway Through Tonight

At midnight you're midway through the fast.  Hallelujah!

Over the past few days I've mentioned health benefits of fasting.  Now I'll list the spiritual benefits, our primary reason for fasting.

Spiritual Benefits #1 - #3: Spirit-Mastery Over The Flesh

Fasting requires self-control and discipline as a Christian denies the natural desires of the flesh.  While fasting the believer's focus is removed from the physical things of this world and instead intensely concentrates on God. Saying this differently, fasting directs our hunger towards God. It takes our minds and bodies off earthly attentions and draws us close to God. As a by-product we gain spiritual clarity which allows us to hear God more clearly.

I like to call it "spirit-mastery over the flesh."  A spiritual benefit of fasting is that we demonstrate that our spirit (under the control of the Holy Spirit) is in control, dominates, and keeps under our flesh.  When we couple fasting with prayer we commune with God.

Our 21-day fast has the power to break addictions. It breaks habits and grants freedom.  If you can sustain your freedom for 21 days you've just broken a habit.  You just broke the addiction. Your job after the fast is to maintain spirit-mastery by continuing daily to walk in the Spirit enjoying your new life!
