Greetings!
It was a cold and icy week.
I hope everyone was warm and had some great family time.
On Tuesday night, the board met and formally voted in Brad Seitel to fill the Vice President vacancy for the remainder of the term. His success in leading the Rabbi Search committee, which brought us Rabbi Prass, made this an easy selection.
This left an At Large position open. We had three highly qualified members who expressed interest in the open position. After reviewing the qualifications of each candidate, the board voted to ask Robert Goldstein to join them as a non-voting At Large member for the remainder of the term. Rob was selected due to his extensive and consistent service to the congregation as a lay leader, Hebrew teacher, Ritual committee co-chair, and technical director of the sound system.
Please join the entire board this Friday night for the
installation of your 2017 Board of Directors.
This process prompted the question...
of why we don't have people resign their current position to run for another so all positions would be on the ballot. There are three reasons for the current process: losing talent on the board, the timeline to get the ballot created, and the large number of positions on the board changing.
We are a small congregation with a limited number of people willing to be on the board. Last year, both Julie Segal and I ran for Vice President. If we required both of us to resign then one of us would have been off the board which would have been a big loss to the congregation.
The timeline to accomplish getting all the nominees on the ballot with resignations is not feasible. This year would have been a perfect example. The positions up for election were President, Secretary, Director of Education and an At Large. We are required to take nominations for one month. I resign the Vice Presidency so there is a second round of nominations for that position. Brad decides to run for Vice President which leaves an At Large position open which requires a third round of nominations. That is three months to get the entire ballot set. We are then required to allow one month to vote which must be completed, per the bylaws, by the end of November. That would require us to start the nomination process by August 1 to make sure we have enough time to complete the election.
When CNT was setup, the election process was created so that only half the board would be up for election to allow for continuity. If we had everyone who was up for election resign their current position, President, Vice President, Secretary, Director of Education, and two At Large positions, that would be two thirds of the board up for election which has been viewed as too much at one time.
I hope this explains why the board appoints any positions left vacant after the election to complete the remaining term(s). Please keep asking questions and sending suggestions.
Shalom,
Michael Gutenstein, President

ADULT ED MOVIE NIGHT! DOUGH
Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 6:00 pm
Join us for the comedy Dough, which was featured at the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival. Widowed and down on his luck, Nat Dayan is desperate to save his London bake shop. His customers are dying off, his sons have no interest in keeping afloat the family business, and hostile businessman Sam Cotton has his own greedy plans for the property. In a pinch, Nat reluctantly enlists the help of teenager Ayyash, a refugee from Darfur. The Muslim boy assists with the bakery's daily chores, while selling cannabis on the side to help his struggling mother make ends meet. When Ayyash one day accidentally drops his stash into the dough, the challah starts flying off the shelf, and an unlikely friendship forms between the old Jewish baker and his young Muslim apprentice.
