Congregation Updates:
As we hear about the incredible devastation in the Philippines it evokes many emotions.
Grief for the lives lost.
Sadness for the homes and businesses destroyed.
Frustration to hear how slow aid has been to those who so desperately needed.
Restored faith in the human spirit as country after country sends supplies, medicine and manpower.
Hope that they will be able to rebuild quickly.
In this season of Thanksgiving let us give thanks for what we have.
It may not always be what we want but we are lucky to have what we need.
We have a caring, close knit family at Ner Tamid.
We may not be in our own space, but we are blessed to be able to practice Judaism freely together.
Four walls and a roof don't make a family or a congregation, the people do.
So in this season give thanks for what we do have. The building blocks to celebrate who we are as a people together.
Shabbat Shalom,
Kristine Goldstein
President
Congregation Ner Tamid

Building update
Kristine, Jennifer and Jule looked at a space Monday. It is a viable space but would need to be built out to accommodate Religious School. The committee will be seeing more properties on Tuesday, November 19. They will report on the properties in next weeks issue of FOF.

Town Hall Meeting Notes
|
Building Committee members- Kristine, Michael, Jennifer and Ernie. Need more members with various skills to enable us to be successful in procuring a space. Lawyers, engineers, decorators, etc.
Communication- not enough communication regarding building status. Kristine apologized and said that it was difficult to inform the congregation of no progression. There will be weekly updates regarding the building search in FOF from now on.
Our membership is up to 58 families. It has increased since leaving our shared space.
It was suggested we need one space for services for continuity. The Ritual committee will meet Monday, November 18 and make a recommendation for service locations. Bob and Sue Huebsch have generously agreed to allow us to continue using MVP for Religious School.
We are in need of a new co-editor for Foundations of Faith. Kim Epstein will be stepping down as of December 1.
Starting a Building Fund was suggested.
Capitol campaign was briefly discussed. The campaign will kick off after we have settled in to our next space.
Fundraising Committee has been revitalized. The next meeting will be December 10 at MVP.
If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions contact a Board member or send an email to BoardofDirectors@mynertamid.org.
Bottom line- a stable atmosphere needs to be provided for our congregants.

What's Happening in the Religious School
|

Dear Congregation Ner Tamid,
My son had his first visit with the Rabbi last night in preparation for his Bar Mitzvah in May, 2014. Ryan's only Judaic and Hebrew teaching has been at Congregation Ner Tamid. He started in kindergarten with many of his fellow seventh graders. The Rabbi quizzed Ryan on the bible stories, meanings of prayers and Hebrew words. Ryan aced it all. He was completing the Rabbi's sentences and actively conversing about the bible, his Torah portion and the prayers. After 2 hours, we walked out of the Rabbi's house and Ryan said "wow, I thought that I was only there for 30 minutes, that was so fun."
I was beaming, not just for my child but for CNT. Not only has my child become a learned Jew but because of the efforts of the CNT community, especially the teachers at the Religious School, my son is extremely well prepared for beginning his Bar Mitzvah training. Most importantly, he is enjoying every minute of his Jewish journey.
As a founding member I have seen our school grow from 10 children to over 60 children. I have seen our membership grow steadily over the years. We have post b'nai children, 10 of them, volunteering in our Sunday school every Sunday. Our teachers are energetic, intelligent and caring.
I thank our entire CNT community for their commitment to our children!! This is exactly what I had hoped for seven years ago when Congregation Ner Tamid was merely a dream.
Sincerely,
Heidi Meyer
CNT Religious School Principal

At our next Congregation Ner Tamid Shabbat our own Youth Group members will assist Rabbi Tom in the presentation of our worship service.
The sermonic remarks will be delivered by the Youth Group President, Megan McMillan.
This past summer Megan participated in a trip to Europe that included a visit to a former concentration camp. That experience, as well as others encountered in her travels, will form the basis of Megan's presentation.
Please plan to join us in support of our Youth Group for what promises to be an uplifting and insightful Shabbat experience. Our Youth Group Advisor is Daryl McMillen.

Reform Jewish Congregation Ner Tamid is in the process of forming a Senior Group, tentatively named The Mavens, to provide more opportunities for our members fifty-five and up to socialize, explore and learn.

"Stop the Silence" event on November 12, 2013
Sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta and Jewish Family & Career Services.
I had an opportunity to be on the Host Committee representing Congregation Ner Tamid Women's Group for the "Domestic Violence Stop the Silence" program on Tuesday, November 12, 2013.
This program was very powerful and depicted all types of abuse. The play of "Not So Happily Ever After" told true stories of some American Jewish Families. There are so many types of abuse out there: verbal, physical and mental. We can do so much to help ourselves and our community.

The URJ General Disaster Relief Fund is collecting donations for Typhoon Haiyan
|
Typhoon Haiyan
Typhoon Haiyan devastation in the PhilippinesIn the early morning hours of November 9, 2013, Typhoon Haiyan made landfall in the Philippines. Thousands of lives were lost and hundreds of thousands impacted when the storm hit. Authorities and aid groups are struggling to deliver safe drinking water, food, and life-saving supplies to disaster zones.
The URJ General Disaster Relief Fund is collecting donations that will be distributed to aid groups working in affected areas.
Click to Donate in American DollarsWhen disaster strikes, Reform Jews trust the Union for Reform Judaism to distribute donated funds to agencies that are most effectively helping those in need. The Union retains no funds from relief efforts, with the exception of direct costs, such as credit card fees. Recent relief efforts have included hurricanes, storms and wildfires in North America, Haiti, Israel Emergency and Sudan. The URJ's General Disaster Relief Fund enables the URJ to respond quickly and swiftly to all types of disasters as needed.

Jewish grandparents whose grandchildren are being raised in intermarried households can play a big role in shaping the Jewish identities of their grandchildren. And they're more likely to get the chance to share the fun and meaning of Hanukkah with their grandchildren this year because of the once-in-a-lifetime convergence of Thanksgiving and Hanukkah. If you're a Jewish grandparent who often gets to spend Thanksgiving with your grandchildren, but rarely Hanukkah, can you introduce a menorah-lighting before or after the Thanksgiving meal? Or whip out a dreidel for a little fun during halftime of the Lions game? Or maybe you can add latkes to the usual Thanksgiving dishes? Careful! Just because this year's holiday conflict is with Turkey Day instead of Christmas, it doesn't mean you can disregard the sensitivities of your adult children and children-in-law. Broach the subject beforehand. Keep it lighthearted and fun. Don't let the season's joy get gobbled up by any preexisting tensions! To talk it out beforehand with your peers who are also thinking about this opportunity, and to address other challenges and opportunities of being a Jewish grandparent of interfaith grandchildren, join the free Grandparents Circle email listserve at www.GrandparentsCircle.org. We welcome your voice in the conversation! And Happy Thanksgivukkah from the Grandparents Circle and everybody at Big Tent Judaism/Jewish Outreach Institute!
