Mystery Tip
How fast did that year go by? A quick review, a special tip, and boom, time to get ready for a new year! Looking ahead, 2016 will be a year devoted to POWER! Each month will illustrate a topic from stretching and strengthening exercises to swing drills or power moves. But first we will put some closure on this past year's short game campaign.
The 12 tips of 2015 were based on the principle that big muscles move small muscles and ran the gamut of short game shots. From chipping with a hybrid to digging out buried lies in the bunker, Facebook enabled us to deliver and demonstrate the tips with additional clarity and flair. (Who could forget Dr. Tom's famous March 2015 chip in??)
This month's tip on Facebook will be executed by the equally impressive Ross Funderburke from Roanoke, Virginia. Ross is the 2015 winner of the Tilghman Invitational in the 13-14 age group here at the Surf Club.
Our final short-game tip for 2015 is twofold and utilizes my favorite short game training aid, the bath towel.
- Placing the bath towel across the chest and under each armpit helps visualize how the shoulders move the hands. One must understand that the biggest mechanical breakdown in the short game is over active wrist conditions. The towel helps keep the wrist quiet and the shoulders busy.
- Learning to trace the target line with the right forearm in the backswing and follow through is my mystery tip of the month. When this concept of right forearm tracing is understood, direction control around the green becomes phenomenal.
For those that like us on Facebook, please see how Ross is using the towel and right forearm to execute a 40 yard pitch. When using the towel for a right handed golfer, feel the left shoulder moving the right forearm strait back from the ball. On the downswing when using the towel you should feel the right shoulder moving the right forearm strait through the ball. The shoulders make a see saw motion! The goal is to allow the shoulders to move the hands while the right forearm traces the target line.
Now it is time to feel the power in 2016! Have a happy and healthy new year.
