Bump and Run from the Trees

So you have missed the green by a good 30 yards and your ball is in the dirt next to a tree. Lovely setting, right? Options become limited when a tree interferes with the ball's flight and the ball is in the dirt. Oh, and did I mention you have to go over a hill to get to the green? Forget taking a mulligan and visit Classic Swing's Facebook page to view Stefany execute this shot.

The topography suggests hitting a fantasy shot! The experienced golfer knows better and a low maintenance shot selection would be to utilize the hill to bump into using a lower trajectory, more of a running, shot once the ball hits the hill. Remember, there are 30 yards to cover from ball to the hole so you must add some power to the chip.
Review of set-up and swing mechanics:
  1. Ball position back of center with your weight distribution and handle leaning forward of center. (Club selection will vary based on individual and overall distance. On Facebook, Stef will be using a pitching wedge.)
  2. The length of the swing is a waist height to waist height motion with a very quiet wrist both back and through.
  3. MUST key on hitting down on the ball. The ball is in the dirt; the answer is in the dirt!
  4. The hill is now your friend. Know where you want to land the ball into the hill and trust you chose the right club to release onto the green. Simply put, if you can't control where the ball starts out then you can't control where the ball ends up, so focus on the landing area.
  5. You should be thinking chip verses pitch here. You want a lower flying shot because of the lie of the ball, the tree, and to manage any misses. Therefore to hit it low, finish low.

This shot is actually an extended version of a chip, so that is why here at The Classic Swing Golf School  we refer to it as the power chip. You can see Dr. Tom famously sink his version of the power chip in this video from April 2015.
Thanks for the Facebook likes! Our alumni schools are keeping us busy, and your reviews have been wonderful.
