Tight Lie Downhill Pitch
Last month, I began to address the concept of bounce on wedges.  You will recall, bounce is  measured in degrees and describes the distance the leading edge of the club is off the ground when the club is soled properly on the ground. This was also demonstrated in the accompanying July video on Facebook, as are all our newsletter tips. Last month was the uphill pitch in deep rough executed with a sand wedge; this month we will consider a downhill pitch with a lob wedge.

So why the lob wedge? For starters, the downhill lie will automatically subtract loft from my club. Secondly, and more importantly, the lie of the ball is tight. When there is not much grass under the ball, referred to as a tight lie, the lob wedge is the proper choice because it is the wedge with the least amount of bounce.

Again, last month's newsletter and the corresponding Facebook video address when and where more and less bounce can help or hurt for short game shot selection. For short pitch shots around the green, keep in mind,

 "More grass needs more bounce,
less grass less bounce."

Before you attempt this shot in an important round of golf, you may want to get in some practice reps! Some set up keys for the downhill pitch include:
  1. Ball position slightly back of center
  2. Handle and weight distribution slightly forward of center
  3. Stance width comfortable for balance and stance line slightly open to my target line
  4. Keep weight forward with an upright backswing.
  5. Keep arms soft in the downswing and simply TURN your chest through impact.

For September, we will discuss the inevitable LOB SHOT. Please remember as suggested in the March newsletter and video when Dr. Tom Brown knocked in the chip shot to illustrate our teaching tip for the month, PLAY TO YOUR STRENGTHS! If you don't have this shot in your bag yet, then simply hit the shot you feel you may be able to pull off.

Thanks for the short game shot suggestions you have emailed me; I look forward to covering them this fall. Stay tuned.
