Students Excel in Science in the North Central Region

On March 13th at the Great Falls Civic Center, 6-12th graders got a chance to show off their science projects. Kailyn Dorhauer, Program Coordinator of the NorthCentral AHEC region, presented an "Outstanding Presentation in Medical/Healthcare in Honor of a Commitment to Rural Healthcare Excellence" award.  The 8th grade award went to Cody Turan of Ulm, Montana. Cody's presentation focused on testing electrolytes in different sports drinks. Cody wants to become a Physical Therapist and is interested in working in rural Montana. The high school award was presented to Stephani Gliko and Brook Lindskog of North Toole County High School. Their presentation was titled "The Effect of Black Tea on Regeneration Rates of Dugesia Tigrina". Both Stephanie and Brooke are interested in pursuing healthcare degrees in Montana.

Congratulations, Cody, Stephanie, and Brooke!

Health Science Teacher Online Training

The OPI Health Science teacher training has been  converted from a classroom-facilitated professional development course to an online learning platform. This change was made in the hopes of reaching more teachers who could not participate in summer training due to other jobs or family commitments. To be eligible for this program, the teacher must be a licensed secondary science, or PE/Health Enhancement teacher with a collegiate course in Anatomy & Physiology.

Through a grant from Missoula College, the first cohort of teachers to sign up for this online training, scheduled for June 17-June 28th, will be able to participate free of charge. The deadline for this training will be May 30th.

For further inquiries or to sign up for this training; please email Renee Harris, Health Science Education Specialist, at Rharris3@mt.gov or call 406.994.6986.

Infectious Diseases

We want to teach biology to high school students in a framework that is relevant to their lives. Disease provides this framework because it affects us all. In addition, educating students about disease will enable them to make informed choices about their health. Considering this, infectious disease is particularly relevant because of its continual impact on individuals and society; we can relate to the aches, pains, and fever resulting from infections, and these experiences can be used to engage students in real-life biology. The infectious disease module has been constructed around five key questions that an informed citizen will want answered in order to understand how infectious disease impacts them. The students will address each of these questions and then, for a final project, they will use them to understand an infectious disease of their choice.

Looking for a hands on activity in the classroom?
Try this "who done it" activity.

Everyone loves a mystery, so put your students to work using various scientific methods to solve a murder or series of murders. This highly variable activity can be structured to your number of players, time limits, grade level, materials, etc. Solving a murder requires utilization of critical thinking skills that will integrate several science disciplines and flow across the curriculum.
