The Rupp House History Center Opens for the Season

This weekend, the Rupp House History Center opened to the public and welcomed nearly 350 visitors!

This season the Rupp House has a very impressive schedule of events including living history, teas and encampments. The House also has a new collection of anniversary relics on display, dating back to 1888.

The Rupp House History Center, established in 2002, is located at 451 Baltimore Street and is the in-town presence for the Gettysburg Foundation and a gathering place for Friends of Gettysburg members.  Open to members and the public free of charge, the House features interactive exhibits, activities and events throughout the season and is also the go-to place to purchase the latest Friends of Gettysburg merchandise! Rupp House

Friends of Gettysburg members at the Patron Level and above may also visit Barbara's Library, an exclusive area for members to relax and review the extensive collection of maps and periodicals related to Gettysburg and the Civil War.

During the Battle of Gettysburg, the Rupp House was home to John and Caroline Rupp and their six children. When the fighting began on July 1, Caroline and the children fled, but John stayed behind. He spent the next two frightful nights in his cellar, hiding from the bullets that were passing through his home with Union soldiers on his front porch and Confederates on his back porch! (In fact, when you visit the Rupp House History Center today, you can see John Rupp hiding out in his cellar!)

The Rupp House is currently open on the weekends and is always looking for new volunteers! For more information about operating hours, events and volunteer opportunities please visit our website or E-mail Becky, Rupp House Coordinator.
