Happy Birthday President Lincoln!

On this day, 204 years ago, President Abraham Lincoln was born in a humble log cabin in Kentucky. While he was always a modest man in his personal life, he achieved greatness throughout his presidency.

Although President Lincoln's only visit to Gettysburg lasted less than 24 hours on November 18, 1863, the impact he had on the town and on the nation as a whole was monumental. Lincoln's purpose, to dedicate the Soldiers' National Cemetery, framed the Gettysburg Address which is forever imbedded in the history and values of America.

Lincoln's brief visit began and ended at the architecturally unique train station located in downtown Gettysburg. He then lodged and put the finishing touches on his Dedication Day remarks at the home of attorney David Wills. Finally, he processed up Baltimore Street to the Soldiers' National Cemetery for the Dedication Day ceremony.

As we commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address this November, it is our goal to unify these sites into one comprehensive learning experience for our visitors.

The Foundation, along with the National Park Service, currently co-manages and operates the David Wills House which features five museum galleries and two recreated rooms, the David Wills Law Office and the Lincoln Bedroom. We also have plans to acquire the Lincoln Train Station on behalf of the NPS.

While the acquisition of these structures is critical to the interpretation of Lincoln's visit to Gettysburg, it is equally important to educate visitors about his motives and moves during his time here.

We will soon launch a Gettysburg Lincoln Experience App, which will use visitors' own smartphones to guide them on a personal tour in the footsteps of President Lincoln on his way to deliver the Gettysburg Address using GPS technology, QR codes, and exclusive narratives.

It is our goal, that by the end of the commemorative period, we will have an enhanced, unified and meaningful experience for visitors to fully appreciate and understand the significance of Lincoln's visit to Gettysburg and its ongoing relevance in today's world.

By now, you received (or will soon receive) the annual Presidents' Day fundraising appeal which will help the Foundation raise money to complete our Lincoln Experience projects and projects like it. We hope you will take the time to read through the materials and contribute to these impactful projects in honor of President Lincoln. As always, your generosity is appreciated.

If you would like to donate online, please visit our secure site and type "Presidents Day" in the comment section.

Thanks to your support, we are able to carry out our mission and follow the wise instruction of President Lincoln to, "never forget what they did here."

Progress at Cemetery Ridge

Anyone touring the battlefield yesterday noticed some new activity occurring at Cemetery Ridge as Interior Specialists, Inc. (a contractor funded by the Gettysburg Foundation) put up a construction fence around the Gettysburg Cyclorama building. The demolition of the building will begin after the asbestos abatement process is completed, which will likely take several weeks.

The Gettysburg National Military Park and the Gettysburg Foundation expect to have the demolition portion of the project competed before the end of this summer.Cyclorama

On January 10, 2013 the National Park Service issued a decision regarding the future of the Cyclorama building at Gettysburg National Military Park and concluding the park's environmental assessment (EA) planning process.  The decision document, known as a Finding of No Significant Impact, or "FONSI," calls for demolition of the Cyclorama building in order to rehabilitate North Cemetery Ridge on the Gettysburg battlefield to its historic 1863 battle, and 1864 - 1938 commemorative-era appearance. The Gettysburg Foundation will provide the funds necessary for the demolition in order to rehabilitate this critical area.

Thank you to all of our members and supporters who have supported the rehabilitation of Cemetery Ridge for the past 10 years. We look forward to keeping you updated on the future progress of this project.

There Is Still Time to Register for the CWI Conference!

The 150th anniversary of the American Civil War presents a unique opportunity to engage public audiences in discussions about the long shadow of the conflict, and the myriad ways in which this past has shaped, and continues to shape, 21st-century America. Looking beyond the anniversary and to the future of Civil War history, where might these discussions lead us? Where do we hope they will lead us? Please join us from March 14-16 as we grapple with these questions in a conference devoted to The Future of Civil War History.

The conference, which is jointly sponsored by Gettysburg National Military Park, Gettysburg College, and the Gettysburg Foundation will devote itself to exploring new ways the historical community can make the Civil War past more engaging, more accessible, and more usable to public audiences as we look beyond the 150th commemorations and to the future of Civil War history. Built around a wide variety of panels, presentations, working groups and field experiences, The Future of Civil War History will include small group conversations on topics such as the environmental history of the war; internationalizing our understanding of the Civil War; interpreting slavery and contraband history at Civil War sites; conflict tourism; teaching the Civil War; reinterpreting Civil War monuments; and gaming the war.

Registration is filling quickly, but seats are still available. Those planning to attend are strongly encouraged to register by Feb. 15. For registration information and a draft program, please visit the conference website.
