Cyclorama Cleaning Provides Special Opportunities for Visitors and First Corps Members

The Gettysburg Foundation and the National Park Service invite visitors to the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center between January 7 and February 1 for an extraordinary opportunity to view the Cyclorama painting while it receives a special cleaning by acclaimed Chief Conservator David L. Olin and his crew of conservators. The rare 377 foot painting weighing 12.5 tons was installed when the new Museum opened in 2008 with plans to survey the environmental surroundings and condition of the painting at scheduled intervals.

Each year Chief Conservator David Olin assesses the condition of the painting in the Museum. As is often the case with paintings, especially large ones, Olin's assessment after three years of its display, showed the painting had a presence of some surface grime on the paint surface especially along the upper portion of the canvas and some grime and dust accumulating on the reverse of the canvas lining. Olin noted that if left in place, the grime would imbed itself into the pristine varnish and paint surface, becoming more difficult to remove. On the back of the painting, the grime would become imbedded into the lining fabric and adhesive layers. Olin recommended a cleaning of the painting that will mechanically remove dust and grime from both the front and back of the canvas.

As operators of the Park's Museum, the Gettysburg Foundation is funding and overseeing the recommended cleaning of the historic painting from January 7 through an expected completion date of February 1, 2013. The cleaning will take place from 8:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and will enable visitors to observe the cleaning of the painting while hearing an historic narrative of the scenes depicted in the painting by knowledgeable members of the Visitor Services Staff. Cleaning will not occur on weekends when the Cyclorama shows will return to the normal ½ hour program with a light show and recorded narration.

First Corps members of the Friends of Gettysburg are invited for a fascinating evening with the conservators who brought the Gettysburg Cyclorama back to its full brilliance in 2008.

If so, register today for the March 2013 The Future of Civil War History conference, co-sponsored by Gettysburg National Military Park and Gettysburg College.

This highly conversational three-day program, which will be held at Gettysburg College from March 14-16, 2013, will devote itself to exploring new ways the historical community can make the Civil War past more engaging, more accessible, and more usable to public audiences as we look beyond the 150th commemorations and to the future of Civil War history.

Built around a wide variety of panels, presentations, working groups and field experiences, The Future of Civil War History will feature over 150 speakers, including David Blight, Scott Hartwig, Nina Silber, Stephen Berry, Brooks Simpson, Tiya Miles, Mark Smith, Megan Kate Nelson, and John Hennessy.
