Your Preservation Dollars at Work

Over the past several weeks, the Spangler Farm property was buzzing with activity. Several volunteers donated over 100 hours of their time and talents to stain boards of plywood used to protect the Spangler Barn from further deterioration over the upcoming harsh months of winter.

Once the volunteers completed their task, a team of carpenters installed the boards. This spring, we intend to complete the architectural and engineering work on all remaining structures.

Acquired by the Foundation in 2008, the George Spangler Farm is perhaps the most well-documented, intact Civil War Hospital site today. Preservation of the farm will provide an unparalleled opportunity for historic interpretation of Civil War medicine and the site of General Lewis Armistead's death.

10th Annual Remembrance Illumination

The Remembrance Illumination on November 17, 2012 was a wonderful tribute to the fallen soldiers of the Battle of Gettysburg and the American Civil War. Over 500 volunteers generously donated their time to assist with the event which drew close to 4,000 guests.

Throughout the evening, a bugler played "Taps" alongside the Honor Guard as volunteers read the names of the fallen soldiers. This  provided a solemn backdrop for attendees as they walked through the Soldiers' National Cemetery, which was illuminated by the candles placed earlier in the day, to remember those who gave their "last full measure of devotion." To see a collage of photos from the event please visit our website.
