April Dinner Meeting

Tuesday, April 9, 2013
The Old Mill, "The Mill Room"
Toronto, Ontario

Topic:
Lubricants Technical Support (LTS) Lab Testing Capabilities

Presenter:

Kurtis D. Hartlen, Lead Chemist/Investigative Analysis Coordinator - Imperial Oil Lubricants Technical Support Laboratory, Sarnia, Ontario

Abstract

The determination of when lubricating oil or greases are no longer suitable for continued use is imperative whether it's in your car, in a pump, or at a power generation station. Routine used oil analysis is an important component to any preventative maintenance program and generally provides the information a lubricant user needs to determine the end of a lubricants life. However, when routine tests no longer provide enough details or major disruptions/incidents occur an understanding of what went wrong is essential: Enter the Lubricants Technical Support (LTS) Laboratory. The LTS lab provides advanced forensic lubrication analysis for customers of Imperial Oil, Exxon Mobil and their affiliates.

Forensic used oil analysis requires an in depth understanding of lubricant design and formulation as well as intimate knowledge of how lubricants are used every day. The LTS lab is made up of engineers, chemists, and field tested and experienced personnel using industry standard and advanced oil analysis techniques and equipment to solve the lubrication problems of today.

There will be an overview of used oil analysis testing capabilities at LTS with a focus on the advanced forensic tests and equipment. A few case studies will also be discussed.

Since 2010 Kurtis has been employed by Imperial Oil in Sarnia, Ontario, at the Sarnia Technology Application and Research (STAR) Centre. 2013 Could be the Best Conference Yet!

Early indicators suggest this year's event could be STLE's strongest in years and the society is expecting some 1,400 attendees. The annual trade show sold out moths earlier than normal. STLE added 13 more booths to the exhibition and they sold out almost immediately! STLE has formed a waiting list so if you are still interested in displaying in the exhibition, please contact national sales manager Nancy VanEe at 630-922-3459 or tnicholas@stle.org

The popular Commercial Marketing Forum, a two-day event where companies can openly promote their products and service (something not allowed at the technical sessions) also sold out! STLE added a 3rd day of the 30-minute time slots so if you are still interested in presenting at the CMF, please contact Tracy VanEe as above.

Some 350 technical paper presentations form the conference's core program. Sessions include: Biotribology, Ceramics and Composites, Condition Monitoring, Engine and Drive Train, Environmentally Friendly Fluids, Fluid Film Bearings, Gears, Grease, Lubrication Fundamentals, Materials Tribology and many, many more.
