V iew from the Corner Booth
Good day to all!
I know there's not a one of us that isn't hoping and praying for warm and dry weather. This past weekend, when I heard a forecast that was showing 12" to 16" of snow for central Maine, I thought seriously, that we were going to bypass spring and go right into summer. Thank goodness the storm missed us, although it did hit downeast Maine. Something tells me we have at least one more, maybe two, significant snowfalls prior to spring really being here.
This weekend I'm going ice fishing again with my boys and there is still two feet of ice in the area where we fish. I am reminded that two years ago at this time, ice was almost out on Sheepscot Lake.
This past week has actually gone by pretty fast, where as the previous two weeks had gone by very slowly. What has changed? Well, for me, it is the reality that the Dine-ah is actually going to close on or about April 14th and, and, as with any big change, a lot has to happen. My Dine-ah staff and I are in "full court press" mode. We have a few things to do in a short period of time so that when the Dine-ah changes hands, everything will be in tip top shape and everyone will be on the same page. I have been meeting regularly with the new owner to be, Lisa Wardwell, of Lisa's Restaurant in Augusta, and her daughter Ashley. We have been coming up with questions and finding answers, so that once we do close, Lisa and Ashley will be able to hit the ground running. They have also been meeting with my management team in anticipation of the change. Even though everyone is excited, there is still a little concern of what it will actually be like, once the new owner takes over. These are very normal and honest feelings which only can be truly answered once the transaction takes place. Together, we are all planning for "business as usual", with some added business which the lounge should bring.
Last week I received so many nice letters from you readers, some who have never written before. I take every one of them to heart and always write back to let you know just how much your letters are appreciated. Our staff deserves a million kudos for pulling off, what has been created at the China Dine-ah. Sherri, I could not have done it without you.
There's always seems to be "one in the crowd" and last week was no exception. The part I like most is that, usually, there is no name or email address so that I can respond in the same manner that I have to the hundred plus congratulatory emails. I would like this individual to hear my answer but with no email address, I have no choice but to answer him or her in this public manner.
Received Thursday March 20, 2014 at 4:01 pm:
All sounds well and i wish Lisa well. I been in the business for 35 years and answer this norm could you pay on a mortgage of stated sale amount and stay in business with a 100 seat restaurant. rumor is your struggling yourself how is she gonna pay on that note. oh i did the math.
My response would have been had I had an email address to send it to:
First, I appreciate your concern however, we are not struggling nor have we ever struggled. Since the day we opened, we have paid every vendor on time and in full with monies received from this operation. We have never missed a payroll and our wages are to the high side in our industry, in fact, health insurance has been provided for management. We have always bought the best products based on our perception of value and not by price alone. Our checkbook balance is healthy and for six and a half years, the Dine-ah has always paid a monthly rent to me that is proportionate to an investment of the stated sale amount. This rent was set by our Certified Public Accountants and would have supported my investment had I borrowed the money to start this venture. I will also add, that with a few changes that Lisa has in mind, (ie. creating a nice lounge in the unused portion of the building) her gross profit is almost certain to increase, without the added burden of additional cooks, additional inventory, and additional energy costs, that are all directly related to food sales. So, whoever you are, I have no concerns that Lisa and Ashley will do just fine, provided they maintain the same high quality standards that the China Dine-ah has grown to be known for. Also, I am not going too far and, as Lisa's mentor, I know that she and Ashley have the ability and the passion to be highly successful in their new venture. I suggest you get your calculator back out! Sorry, I just had to get this out, for never in my life, would I set someone up, where I thought they would fail. I am very excited for Lisa, Ashley, our current staff at the Dine-ah, our vendors, the Town of China, surrounding communities and last, but not least, all you valued customers who have grown to enjoy what it is that we offer.
This past Wednesday night Trivia, I had a great time talking with several of you. Again, I really appreciate the words of praise and excitement you have for me. It's also great to hear your words of support for Lisa and that you feel she will do an excellent job.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart,
Norm
