V iew from the Corner Booth
Hi, it's Sherri, good day from the Corner Booth! While Norman is at a banking convention, I have been asked to write a message for the newsletter. I could think of nothing more fitting than the following heartfelt message. "OK, I give up! Uncle! Please, no more." I am officially tired of winter. I used to like the four seasons, but when winter lasts for almost half the year, I want to fast forward to complaining about mud season. I want to see running water on the road side. I want my dog to have grimy feet and have his chest and belly covered with the gritty splash that he'll get from running out in the field when the melt finally occurs - which, so far, isn't in sight. I want to hear my horses sloshing through the thawed muck instead of hearing them clomp on the frozen earth. I want to see them be able to get beyond the small space of plowed and safe ground and wander through the muddy spring fields. Yep, for me spring can't come soon enough,
but I shouldn't really complain. It's not like the snow is a problem even though it's still a foot or two deep in parts of the yard. It's easy to walk on top of it because it's pretty well frozen solid. That's due to - what was that phrase the weather man used the other night? Oh yeah, "unseasonable cold with no end in sight".
And while I'm on this topic, will someone help me understand global warming? I try to be environmentally minded. I don't like the idea of the greenhouse effect, or hearing newscasts of the polar caps melting and the ocean levels rising. I have to say, though, I'm not ready to buy a boat because there isn't any global warming going on this year where I live. It's cold, real cold. We've been living through "The Arctic Vortex." I think the ice caps are OK at least for now. I'm looking forward to black fly season. Because of my carrying on, I can hear my dear father now. He'll be telling me that I need to "toughen" up. He'll say, "Why I remember one year when we had so much snow, we had to crawl out the second floor window to start digging out the front door. And then he'll tell me about "harvesting ice down on the lake" which he did, and of how every once in a while a horse would go through the ice. Don't get me wrong, I love the way he compares today to the old days, but I have to say that I don't like the idea of snow up to my roof, or of my horse in a couple of fathoms of ice water. Oh well, spring will be here soon. We will have mud season, my dog will track grit through the house every time he comes in from outside, my horses will slosh through the muck, I will be plastering bug spray on horses daily, heavy rains will wash out my garden at least twice and we'll all be swatting black flies....and I can't wait! Thank you for your continued support, be assured, we stay at a consistent temperature here at the Dine-ah and look forward to seeing you soon! Stay warm, Sherri
