Good day to All!

Most of you regular readers know that I was at a banking convention at the Mount Washington hotel two weeks ago now. For those of you who didn't, now you do.

For those of you who have been to conventions, you are all familiar with break out sessions where a speaker will go over a topic relevant to what the convention is all about. I must admit, that most presentations are pretty dry when you are talking about interest rate risk, FDIC regulations, TARP, and the like. Then there are always a great speaker or two, and this years was a gentleman named Steve Gilliland. I would encourage you to look him up online (www.stevegilliland.com) and listen to a couple of his videos. He has written a book called "Enjoy the Ride", from which each and every one of us could get several pointers. It's all about slowing down and enjoying the moment; about doing the thing that is most important to yourself and others in your life. It is also about concentrating on what you are doing and not having your mind elsewhere. At times, I am a big offender of this and I'm sure some of you are are also. Technology is sometimes the enemy, when we really should be concentrating on what it is at hand.

The big question is, what are we going to do about it?

We all received a book mark which contained the "ABC's To Enjoy the Ride" and here are some of Steve's words:
  • Appreciate * Believe* Care* Dream* Encourage* Forgive* Give* Help* Imagine
  • Joke* Kindle* Listen* Mentor*Nurture* Observe* Pray* Quality*Read* Sympathize
  • Trust* Understand* Value* Walk* Xpect* Yearn*Zealous

On the back of the bookmark was "Making a Difference"
A Matter of...PURPOSE-It Drives You, PASSION - It Fuels You, PRIDE - It Defines You  (Both sides of the bookmark shown below)

On Monday of this past week, I went to the Fryeburg Fair with a long time employee/friend Dennis Langis, who is a Field Superintendent at G & E Roofing. Many years ago, Dennis expressed interest in attending the Fryeburg Fair with me on Woodsman's Day, and we have been going every year since. I started G & E Roofing in 1975 and Dennis started the year after. He started out installing roofs (right alongside me!) and is now one of our two Field Superintendents (along with Chris Russell). Together they oversee all of our field crews. Dennis lives in Palermo with his wife Deb, and has three grown children, Ashley, Justin and Lariah. When he's not at work, he enjoys restoring jeeps, camping and snowmobiling. Combined, we have 75 years of service at
G & E Roofing.

Above is a picture of Dennis and I last night at a company BBQ, put on by the office staff at G & E Roofing. This is done for all of our roofing crews as a show of appreciation and thanks for their hard work. When the crews returned from the days work, the office staff had everything set up and prepared. Dave Fuller was on the grill, cooking New York sirloin steaks to perfection. Also served was potato salad, green beans, dinner rolls  and a cake for dessert. This is done a couple of times a year and we feel it's the little things that set us apart from others. As always, the crews were very appreciative and thankful for the effort put forth by the other part of our team, the office staff.

I haven't read the book, however, I'm sure Steve Gilliland would be impressed with the way that we treat each other in our workplaces, both at G & E and at the Dine-ah.

Jokingly, I told someone today "Find me the place on Earth  where the weather is consistently similar to the weather we have experienced the last several days and I will move there." How can you beat cool nights, warm dry days with sun and little wind?

Make it a great day! Hey, make it a great week!

Norm
