Good day to All!
It has been a crazy couple of weeks! First, my trip to India, thanks to you all for the many nice notes and comments. I am happy you all enjoyed the pictures so much.
Currently, I am at a Independent Community Bankers Association National Convention in Las Vegas, as a Trustee of Kennebec Savings Bank. On Tuesday, I took a bus tour to the Red Rock Spring Mountain Ranch, which is just west of the city, and located in the 66,000 acre Red Rock Canyon.
Built by pioneer Jim Wilson in the 1960's and once owned by Howard Hughes, the ranch is located next to a manmade lake, dug out over a natural spring. Without the spring/lake, this area is pretty much uninhabitable. I have many pictures to share once i get back and get assistance downloading them from my camera.
On Wednesday, I attended the first general session of the convention and have had the opportunity to see and hear the following speakers listed below. I'm sure these names may mean little to you, however they are very powerful people in our financial system, with the exception of the last person who served as the guest speaker: Martin Gruenburg, Chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, better known as the FDIC, which is the government agency that insures your money that is held by US banks. Next up was Richard Cordray, Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and I believe the name of the agency speaks for itself on what they do. Next was Cam Fine, who is the President and CEO of the Independent Community Bankers of America, which is the organization that we are part of and who was sponsoring the conference. I found the speakers very interesting and insightful. Finally, Chris Wallace, veteran journalist and host of FOX News Sunday spoke. He was an absolute riot and gave us an inside look into Washington and shared with us his "take" on the political climate there.
Today, I will be hearing the following guest speakers: Thomas Curry - Controller of the Currency Office of the Controller; we will also hear from Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, and I'm sure he will be every interesting to listen to. The last speaker, of whom most of you will recognize his name, will be Joe Montana, former NFL quarterback of the San Francisco 49'ers. I will be boarding a plane tomorrow morning, arriving in town late evening and I can't wait to get back. My convention schedule has been very busy so I have seen very little of the outdoors. I'd like to thank Mark Johnston, president of Kennebec Savings Bank for the opportunity to serve on the bank board.
Quick update on construction of the China Dine-ah Too: New foundation complete; two new 16' x 16" additions complete with roofing; reroofing of the existing structure, with new architectural shingles on the front and rubber roofing on the rear of the building complete; existing siding has been removed; interior framing 80% complete; structural upgrades of existing floor system and carrying beams have been completed also. A new 200 amp electrical entrance has been installed; we are currently finishing the final kitchen layout;, and electricians are on site. I am also looking at the final design of our heating and cooling systems and the new well and septic will be installed as soon as weather permits.
We have a lot of loose ends to tie up before we can open the doors; however I have my fingers crossed for a late June opening. I recently saw with Laura Benedict, owner of the Red Barn, at a community event and she invited me to come up and look at her operation and to take away any helpful hints that would assist me in my new endeavor. I met with Laura and Shane last week, Peter was out, and they gave me a quick walk through of the kitchen and answered my many questions. Laura has invited me to come in and work with them on a busy Friday night, which will be occurring on March 22nd. I think Laura is as excited as I am about me visiting her establishment, The Red Barn, and said if I brought in China Dine-ah t-shirts, her entire staff would wear them that night, how cool is that for two businesses to have such a relationship?! I must add that before Laura's Mom passed away last year, they were regulars at the China Dine-ah. Thanks again Laura, I really appreciate the help! I know that Laura, Peter and Shane look up to me as a local community leader and I feel the same about them. Can't wait to get back to Maine see everyone soon!
p.s.- Next week, I'll be sure to share the pictures from this trip.
