Good day to All!
Even though you are receiving this newsletter on Thursday, I am actually writing it on Tuesday afternoon with my assistant Sue Grenier at our offices at G & E Roofing in Augusta. You ask why am I writing it today? The reason is simple, I will be on a plane bound for New York tomorrow at 3:50 pm and after a layover, I will be headed to Goa, India to visit my daughter and son in law. I am traveling by myself only because my wife can not bring herself to embark on a 37 hour journey which includes about 18 hours of flying time. Planes are not her favorite past time. On the flip side of that, I have learned to enjoy traveling by myself. There is a certain peace of mind when you only have to fend for yourself. Less stressful if you know what I mean. The last couple of days, I have been tying up a lot of loose ends, both at the Dine-ah and at G & E Roofing as I plan on being away for 10 days. Also, this year I have a new twist in my travel plans. With my daughter Leslie expecting her first child in July, I was asked if I minded if she had some mother and child items mailed to my house that I would bring along with me. My first reaction was "sure, I would love to" but I needed to understand why these items couldn't simply be shipped from the US to India. Mind you, these items can not be purchased in India. It is my understanding that the freight charges to ship items overseas is somewhat expensive but also the dependability of the items arriving in good condition, or at all, makes one find alternate delivery channels; ie. Dad with one, or maybe two, additional 50 pound pieces of luggage.
Leslie researched the costs and for $40 I can bring along an additional bag weighing up to 50 pounds. Once over the 50 pounds, serious additional fees are charged. In all my travels, I have never worried about the weight of a bag, but in this case, I am. So out came the bathroom scales. I must back up for a second and hopefully I don't lose you. For the last two weeks, packages have been arriving at the house daily with my daughter tracking each and every one. The total came to about 10 in all, with various shapes and sizes. I thought to myself, how am I ever going to fit the contents into a suitcase or large duffel bag? My daughter was quick to point out that I had to take the contents out of the boxes and probably out of the original packaging. That I knew, and still had a small concern, but never let her know. A couple nights ago, I opened up all the boxes and in some cases, removed original packaging, and laid everything out on my bed. I can't begin to tell you what was there, but I can name a few of the items: cloth diapers of all sizes, various baby care products (soaps and lotions), special nursing bras (more than I need to know!), baby safe plastic bottles, baby washing detergent, Q-Tips, and several Melaleuca brand items sent along by her Mom. This is to name a few, remember, you can not purchase these items where she is at. The good news is that it all fit into one large duffel bag weighing 47 pounds! Leslie and I have had a great time with this whole luggage issue and I am so glad I can be of help to her.
You should have seen me. I first tried weighing the bag as I was filling it by bringing the bathroom scale into the bedroom. I'm sure some of you know that scales do not work the same on carpet as they do a solid floor and yes, this was the case. So I brought the scale back into the bathroom and proceeded to carry the duffel bag out through two 32" doors, bumping into the door jambs as I passed through the doors. It was a sight, but anything for your little girl who is 8,000 miles from home. I was thrilled when it was full and that it came in under the 50 pound threshold.
Off to a Kennebec Savings Bank Board of Directors meeting, out to the Dine-ah tonight and hopefully a good nights sleep tonight before I embark on my journey.
Thanks to all and stay tuned for some photos in next week's newsletter. If you can't wait til then, friend me on Facebook and you will see them as soon as I post them.
I want to give a special thanks to my staff at the Dine-ah for carrying the torch while I am gone. I appreciate each and every one of you.
Good day to all!
