Good Day to All!
For you regular readers, you know that I am all over the place, not only in what I write but also in what I do. It has been a while since I have written about what is going on in my world in general, so here's a quick update.
Where do I start? Here we go!
My youngest son Kyle is in his senior year at Cony and playing basketball. Currently their record is 4 and 8 and they have their work cut out to make the Eastern Maine tourney. The kids seem to be having fun and are they learning some life skills, so all is good.
My middle child Derek completed his first semester at Thomas College and realized school is not for him at this point in his life. Derek is a lot like me, in that he prefers to learn by doing "hands on" versus the classroom. We must remember a big reason Derek went to college was because of a friend, Josiah, who we took in and helped him fulfill his dream. Josiah is still at Thomas doing very well and loving college life.
Derek has started working for my other company, G & E Roofing, as a laborer and absolutely loves it. He fully understands the opportunities that lie ahead but he also fully understands how to get there. Starting at the bottom, hard work/total commitment, learning everything that you can along the way and participating in training programs is the path for advancement. He seems like a new kid, very happy and very motivated. Dad is happy that he is happy.
Leslie, my 34 year old daughter in India and her husband Abhi, are expecting their first child in July. I'm thrilled, but it has not totally sunk in at this point. Being a grandfather is something that I will cherish. I'm headed to India in February for two weeks, which means I will actually be there ten days. I was smart last year and applied for a five year Visa, so all I need to do is get a couple of shots and I am good to go. Can't wait to see the both of them!
My wife Teresa is very involved in her new venture "Whispering Winds Horse Stables" along with her parents Everett and Sandra Barnard. She also volunteers at the high school for Cony Sports Boosters. We usually see each other passing at the door! One is usually coming and the other is going.
At the new Dine-ah Too, construction is underway. The rough earthwork is complete, the additions have been framed and made weather tight, structural upgrades are complete and all the inside demo is done. I have subcontractors lined up for the earthwork, electrical, plumbing, and sheetrock. Soon I will be working with vendors on the restaurant equipment, both for the bakery and for the fried seafood/chicken portion of the Dine-ah Too kitchen. Everything is on schedule for a late June opening.
Our China Dine-ah van is completely lettered and parked adjacent to Route 3 ready to shuttle non-refrigerated goods back and forth, such as baked goods and vegetables from the root cellar. We also may use it in various parades or other promotions.
At the YMCA, we wrapped up our 2012 Strong Kids Campaign reaching our goal of $160,000. and securing a $100,000. contribution from Elsie Viles. Our KVYMCA has an annual budget of approximately $2.1 million. It has been and always will be a challenge to operate a facility of this nature with income derived from memberships, programming fees and donations.
At G & E Roofing, we completed another successful year performing over $8 million in roofing services. We are also putting the finishing touches on the roofing of the new regional hospital, Alfond Center for Health. This was a $3 million roofing project for us and all indications are that the owners and builders are thrilled with our performance. Hats off to Chris Russell from our office who headed up this project with assistance from many.
At Kennebec Savings Bank of which I am a Trustee, the bank had a good year under the leadership of Mark Johnston. As in any business, we have felt the pressure of a down economy and staff has worked harder than ever to retain market share. We recently opened a new branch in Farmingdale which will service the greater Gardiner area. It is a beautiful facility built to the highest of environmental standards, receiving LEED certification.
Next week, we will be welcoming back Sherri Glidden, our General Manager at the Dine-ah. She has been in Ohio for two weeks visiting her daughter Stacy Westfall, son in law Jessie and grandsons, Caleb, Joshua and Nathan. I would like to thank Michelle Glidden for managing the Front of the House in Sherri's absence.
With that said, I turn 59 this Friday and look forward to another ten to fifteen years of being actively involved, not only in my businesses, but also in the communities we represent.
In closing, I would like to thank all of you for your continued support in all that I do. I will always strive to provide the best products or services in whatever industry I'm involved in.
Sunday Breakfast Buffet - come join us!
Good day to All!
