UPDATE ON JEAN MENTANE
Last week, FFCC introduced you to Jean Mentane, a Haitian woman who is suffering from an enlarged thyroid or goiter. We want to say THANK YOU to those who have contributed thus far towards helping her get the much needed surgery to remove this mass. We are just over half way to the goal of raising the $3,050 necessary to cover the cost for her surgery and related expenses. THIS IS A LIFE-SAVING SURGERY AND YOUR SUPPORT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! All donations are tax-deductible. You can send your contribution to the address below. Just note in the memo section of your check- Jean Mentane. You can also contribute via Paypal from our website (www.ffccsd.org).
The full article about Jean Mentane is on our website if you missed it last week and would like to read more.

RELIEF FOR MOORE, OKLAHOMA
As most of you know, Moore, Oklahoma was struck by a devastating tornado on May 20th that has left significant destruction. It has been reported that between 12,000 - 13,000 homes were destroyed or damaged and 33,000 people were affected. FFCC has been in contact with people in the area, and as a result of the generous outpouring of people near and far there is an abundance of resources at this time. So, in preparation for when those resources run out, FFCC, in partnership with the Kiwanis Club and Salvation Army, would like to host a Community-Wide Food Packaging Event to benefit the families of Moore Oklahoma. The event is being planned for August, 2013. An official date has yet to be determined. We would like to package as many meals as possible and therefore would love for you to join us in this effort. You can designate your donations to Moore, OK- FPE (food packaging event). All donations are tax-deductible. FFCC will keep you appraised if there are additional ways we can help.

FFCC'S 50th FOOD PACKAGING EVENT AT DEL NORTE HS!
FFCC held its 50th Food Packaging Event this past Friday with Del Norte High School! We packaged 20,000 meals for Haiti. The K.I.N. Club (Kids In Need) sponsored the event by rallying the students and raising the necessary funds. We had 200 students who came out to support the event. This was Del Norte High School's second event and here is what Katarina Stapleford, President of K.I.N. Club, had to say about the day.
" I've been participating in food packaging events since 5th grade, but this one was extra special to me for many reasons. First, I had the opportunity to travel to Haiti with FFCC this past spring, allowing me to see first-hand the importance these meals make in the fight against hunger. So for me, it brought the whole food packaging effort full circle. Secondly, it was extra special as it is my Senior year, so it will be the last one that I will be coordinating at DNHS. It also had special meaning for me because the Fight Against Hunger Club officers from five different high schools also came out to lend a hand at our event, allowing us all to work together as teen leaders. I want to thank Sprouts Markets and Boney Family, FFCC, the KIN Club Leaders, and the Del Norte community for all the support in helping make this happen."
We look forward to more food packaging with Del Norte High School and hope to have events on ALL our high school campuses in the future. Way to set the bar, Del Norte!

OAK VALLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL CLASS CARING FOR OUR HOMELESS!
Saturday May 25th at 8:00 a.m., Jeannine Ugalde's class of 7th and 8th graders showed up at the Salvation Army ready to care for our homeless. They spent the next two hours assisting our homeless as they soaked their tired feet in tubs of warm soapy water. The students then provided fresh new socks and served up yummy pancakes and hot chocolate. Our homeless participants were thrilled with the special care they received. These students, in addition to their efforts on this Saturday morning, also worked to raise $600 to support FFCC's foot washing program. Now, many more homeless can experience this same kind of love and attention. Here's what some of the students had to say about the morning-
"I want to remember how grateful the homeless were when we helped them. They are normal people who have had to endure a lot of hardships." Umesn
"These people have been labeled homeless, but really, they are people like me. I realized that I really liked helping others. I'm going to take more opportunities to serve." Surabhi
"When I came here I didn't know what to expect, but now that I have helped others who needed help, it was a very good feeling." Cesco
Congratulations, Oak Valley, you were phenomenal!

YOU CAN HELP!
Summer months lead to opportunities for families to volunteer together on projects to help our neighbors. Daytime volunteers are needed on Fridays from 9am- 11am to assist with our "Free Farmers Markets" at Poway locations. And we're looking for evening volunteers on the 3rd and 4th Thursdays of the month from 4:30pm to 7:30pm for our monthly Community Care food distributions held in partnership with churches in Rancho Penasquitos and Poway. We don't need too many volunteers each time, but regular assistance will be greatly appreciated. We're also looking for a couple new assistants to help monthly with delivering food bags to Poway Senior Citizens in need. Each of these opportunities requires only a few hours of time, on a monthly basis. You too can be the reason FFCC receives messages like this- Thank you for the healthy food and grocery card! The food banks usually only have high carb and high fat food so this was a nice treat. The FFCC ladies were so awesome to deliver. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
