A FAMILY IN NEED--CAN YOU HELP?

There is a family in our community with twin 6 year-old boys. One of the twins was recently diagnosed with Medullobastoma, an extremely rare form of brain cancer. The family struggles to maintain a semblance of normalcy while fighting to beat this cancer together as a family. The family has temporarily been relocated to Los Angeles where the child is in the middle of 30-day radiation treatment and chemotherapy. He has also undergone surgery to remove tumors and place a shunt in his brain. For now his treatment is as an inpatient, but when his 30 days of radiation are complete, he will go home to San Diego and continue outpatient treatment and much needed physical therapy.

The family is very much in need of a vehicle. They do not have a vehicle acceptable for the many trips between San Diego and Los Angeles as well as the physical therapy and other cancer treatments. If you have a reliable vehicle that you would like to donate to this family please contact Phil Harris at [email protected].  All donations to FFCC are tax deductible.  I'm always so impressed at how our community rallies around families and individuals in need. Please help us get the word out and let's see how we can provide for this family going through this difficult season.

NEW JERSEY HURRICANE RELIEF FOOD PACKAGING EVENT

On January 12th and 13th, FFCC will be traveling to New Jersey to host our first Food Packaging Event in 2013.  FFCC will be partnering with a number of local organizations and businesses throughout Secaucus, New Jersey to package 100,000 meals.  FFCC is raising funds that will match their 100,000 meal event and hopefully more.  The combined efforts of both East Coast and West Coast will provide 200,000 meals to the local food banks to distribute to families in need.  The need for food is already a big issue, and we know how quickly these resources go away as visibility and TV coverage decreases.  So by January the need for food will HUGE!  Here's how we can help;

1)    It will cost $25,000 to package 100,000 meals (.25 cents a meal)  We need 1,250 individuals to donate $20 (or 80 meals) to make this happen.  What a great gift to give in someone's name at Christmas or a way for your family to reach out to our neighbors on the East Coast.

2)    Volunteers to travel with FFCC in January to support the event.  All volunteers would be expected to cover their own travel and hotel costs but FFCC can help coordinate the trip.

3)    Spread the word.

Because of the Christmas holiday season, the funds will need to be raised by the 8th of December in order to purchase the bulk food ingredients and have them delivered on time.  So please make your donation today through pay pal or write a check to:

HAITI TEAM UPDATE!

Here is the Monday, November 12th update from Tina Socha on the Haiti Medical Team Trip:

What a beautiful day it was today in Gressier! The sun was shining.  It was probably in the mid to high 80's.  Our team of 21 was up having breakfast at 7:00am.  Our interpreters arrived shortly afterward and we came together to get to know each other and work through the plan for the clinic.  There are 16 interpreters that are working with us.  It's an incredible group of young people.

We paired up and headed off to the clinic.  There was some last minute set-up to do and while we finished with that our Haitian patients began to line up outside in our make-shift waiting room under a large mango tree.

Our doors opened at noon and over the next five hours we saw mamas and their babies, young people, the old and frail, and everyone in-between.  They had dermatitis, scabies, high blood pressure, infections, diabetes, depression, and malnutrition. We did all we could to love on these people. Janie gave massages to every person in the waiting room (64+ people).  Our nursing staff talked with patients to understand their needs.  They took all the vitals and ran the necessary screening tests and from there our patients were escorted to one of our four doctors.

Carol and Karen, our pediatricians, took care of the babies, and children and Eunice and Cyril saw the adults.  From there, they moved onto our pharmacy area.  Joel, Bee, and Trisha put together the medications prescribed by the docs, and with the help of the interpreters made sure each patient understood about the medicines they were being given.

Then, as they headed out the door, Jay, one of our security team, gave them a gift of a hygiene bag filled with helpful lots of goodies. We know how much this clinic meant to these people today, but as blessed then they were, we were even more blessed!

We made it back to Shepherd's House by 6:15 and inhaled a delicious dinner-- fried chicken, mashed potatoes and veggies.  It tasted sooo good! Everyone shared how much they enjoyed the day and are ready to go again tomorrow.  Tomorrow we'll open the clinic doors at 9:00 m and go until 4:00pm.  After that it gets too dark.  We are all feeling good--tired but good.

FFCC APPLAUDS ITS CORPORATE PARTNER --

BACTES IMAGING SOLUTIONS!

BACTES, a San Diego medical records service provider, has been a partner of FFCC for several years beginning with support of FFCC's Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts along the Gulf Coast in 2005. Beginning that year, the company moved away from giving Christmas gifts to clients in order to give back to the community at large. BACTES now has a program that involves all its employees across the country called BACTES People Give Back.

Over the last several years, BACTES has donated thousands of dollars to FFCC programs for hurricane and fire recovery, water filters, and earthquake relief. In 2011, BACTES sent five employees to Haiti to work with FFCC to help build an orphanage and distribute food and water filters to those in need. BACTES employees have taken part in many of the food packaging events and are currently mounting a food drive in support of FFCC's Thanksgiving outreach to needy families.

Thank you,BACTES, one of our important community partners!

THANKFULNESS!

Thanksgiving came a little early for our homeless guests this past Monday night!  Our volunteers served a wonderful turkey dinner with all the trimmings.  It was a site to behold, and not bad on the taste buds, either. Thank you to all the families who prepared the turkeys for us  and to ALL the volunteers who were there to serve--Pop Warner Scripps Ranch Falcons, Kids Korp, Fight Against Hunger Clubs from Westview, Mt. Carmel, and Poway, the Kids In Need Club from Del Norte, Meadowbrook Middle School, Grace Lutheran, Cornerstone Church from Poway, Home Church from Poway, and all our other FFCC families.

Your cards, desserts, clothing donations, smiles, and hugs gave our homeless much to be thankful for that night.  FFCC is thankful for each of you!
