A special thank you to staff appreciation chair Archana Verma and her wonderful team of parents for providing a delicious lunch of sandwiches, soups, salads and desserts last week. Odle staff loved the lunch! Thank you to  Bharti Arora, Anne Bentley, Mamatha Helligehalli, Dana Huang, Evelyn John, Azam Khan, Julia Lee, Luanne Lemmer, Cerys Maning, Barbara Skotte, Anju Solanky, Patti Straumann, Selena Surtaz, Anne Taves, Marcia Teixeira, Deepa Varghese, Dee Ann Wilson.

Apologies for any names missing in the list above. We are very thankful to all who donated to the wonderful staff appreciation luncheon. The teachers and staff were very appreciative.

Open Positions

  • Viking Hut Bookkeeper (1 ½ hour week commitment).
  • Legislative Rep.
  • VP Fundraising: Serve on the friendly PTSA board (1 meeting per month) and also coordinate the March Magic publicity and letter campaign. It's not a fancy event, just a Pass the Hat letter in the mail! The template for this is already established and last year's chair will be there to mentor the new VP at every step. This should be one of the most rewarding PTA jobs of the entire year.
  • Reflections Chair or Co-Chairs: An outstanding opportunity to promote art in our schools. This job is also very rewarding and a great opportunity to network with the reflections parents at the other schools. The chair is under the constant direction of the city-level PTA chair.

Please email krista_hammer@yahoo.com for job descriptions. Or call Krista with questions 968-2590.

Odle Students Excel at 2013 Future Problem Solving State Bowl

Congratulations to students from Odle who recently took top places in the Washington Future Problem Solving State Bowl. This year's competition topic was "Ocean Soup." Students competed against other individuals and teams from across Washington at the state event held April 10-12 at Warm Beach. Winners in 1st and 2nd place from the State Bowl will advance to the Future Problem Solving International (FPSPI) competition which will be held June 6-9 at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. FPSPI involves thousands of students annually from Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, and the United States. The competition stimulates critical and creative thinking skills, encourages students to develop a vision for the future, and prepares students for leadership roles. Interlake participants this year were coached by Daniel Becker, and Debby Benzinger and Joan Boyd coached the Odle teams.

Camille Richards placed first in the Individual competition:

Team Winners from Odle include:

Junior--1st place (Mehek Dedhia, Surtaz Khan, Gabriel Shen, Vaughn Poon)

Junior--2nd place (Jacob Zhang, Maxwell Zhang, Colin Tang, Ethan Ling)

Middle--3rd place (Terrance Wang, Nikolai Warner, Andrew Xue, Jenny Xu)
In addition, one junior team from Odle (Rasika Obla, Eshan Kemp, Anirudh Prakash, Eshika Saxena) ranked third in junior presentations.

During an awards ceremony April 12, these winners were announced. In all, 125 students from Bellevue School District qualified to compete in this year's Washington State Future Problem Solving Bowl.

Testing has been a hot topic in the news recently.  What tests do students in Bellevue schools take and why?  How are the tests used to measure student outcomes?  Bellevue School District's Naomi Calvo, Director of Research and Accountability and Chris Lindberg, Manager of Data, Research, and Testing, will share the answers to these questions and provide insight into the future of testing in the district.
