Odle News

Thank You Trader Joe's!

The Odle PTSA and students participating in the Odle Success Initiative would like to thank Trader Joe's near Crossroads for their generous donation of healthy snacks.  Students staying after school get hungry, and the Trader Joe's snacks will help them stay focused.

ODLE Thank You for the Staff Appreciation Massages!

Odle PTSA and the Odle Staff are very appreciative of the free massages provided to our teachers as part of staff appreciation month.   BACK AND NECK PAIN CENTERS on Lake Hills Blvd. provided complimentary massages to our teachers last week throughout the day.  Dr. Kate Thomas would like us to extend an offer of a free in office consultation and exam (with 2 x-rays if needed) for anyone who makes an appointment by May 31st when they call 425 649-9335.  When we thanked her for the massages, Dr. Thomas said, "It was my pleasure!  I'm glad the staff enjoyed it!"

ODLE KIDS TOP THE WASHINGTON "YOU BE THE CHEMIST CHALLENGE"

The inaugural Washington YBTC Challenge was held on April 20, 2013 and involved students from twenty five schools across King, Pierce, Snohomish and Thurston counties.  All the participants took a written test as a qualifier from which 30 students were selected for the electronic rounds.  In the final round, when only two participants were left, the format changed to oral questions.

Eshan Kemp, a 6th grader from Odle Middle school, emerged as the State Winner!  Eshan Kemp will be traveling to Philadelphia for the National "You be the Chemist Challenge" to be held on June 24th.   Several other Odle students also gave outstanding performances in the competition:

2nd Place was Mehek  Dedhia  (6th grader)
7th place was Anirudh Prakash (6th grader)
8th Place Benjamin Wu  (8th grader).

Congratulations to all of these students!  We are proud of you!

Math Testing Support

Thank you very much to Delfina Jimenez and Maria Rendon for helping Odle PTSA and our math teachers put together some supplies that will be used during the May math testing.

Multicultural Extravaganza

Many thanks from Ms. Amy Yaeger and Multicultural Extravaganza co-chairs Barb Skotte and Anju Solanky to the volunteers who helped make the extravaganza a success: Laurie Angelo, Lesley Bacon, Bob Connell, Margaret David, Adam Dibba, Sandra Facon, Katya Fujimoto, Vincent Garcia, Krista Hammer, Ilona Larson, Colette Le, Phi Nguyen, Maryanne Regan, Patty Roberts and Joe Sitomer. Also, thank you to the many who brought wonderful ethnic dishes to share--there was an incredible array of mouthwatering treats! If you left behind a dish or platter, they can be retrieved from the Odle office.

Staff Appreciation

Thank you Staff Appreciation chair Archana Verma for organizing massages for faculty last week. Also, thank you to all of the staff appreciation committee volunteers who dropped off tasty treats for the staff on May 1. This team of volunteers delivers! It's that time of year when our hardworking teachers truly appreciate the support.

Community Forum on the New Building

Parents and community members are invited to a community forum on May 22 at 6pm in the Odle library. As most of you know, Odle Middle School will be torn down at the end of the 2013-2014 school year and rebuilt. Please come to ask questions and learn about plans for the new building.

PTSA Officers Elected for 2013-2014

The following candidates were elected at the April 25 PTSA general meeting. Congratulations to the new officers!

  • Co-president: Michelle Deerkop
  • Co-President: Sonia Misra
  • Secretary: Shaila Shetty
  • Treasurer: Jane Wang
  • Assistant Treasurer: Cathy Zhou
  • Vice President Fundraising: Still Open

Thank you very much to our PTSA nominating committee, Brenda Bedrosian, Cathy Zhou, Amelia Kwok and Katie Moran, for helping us put such a talented team in place for 2013-2014! Our nominating committee members also helped us find many of our committee chairs and coordinators for next year.

Looking for a way to be more involved at Odle?

PTSA has open positions for next school year. Help shape your child's experience at Odle as the PTSA Webmaster, Vice President for Fundraising, Emergency Preparedness Liaison or Reflections Chair.   Be a part of Odle's success!

Emergency Preparedness Coordinator

Would you like to help Odle stay prepared for a natural disaster or other event? Odle has an emergency plan and maintains emergency supplies for the school and community, but we need someone to serve as the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator. This person would work with faculty on the school's emergency team and will offer PTSA assistance as necessary. He or she will also be responsible for keeping an accurate inventory of emergency supplies and for replacing and purchasing supplies as necessary.  The Coordinator may also help develop materials to inform the Odle community about the school's emergency plans. Please email odleptsa@hotmail.com if interested.

VP Fundraising

The VP of Fundraising has a unique opportunity to work with teachers, parents and Odle administrators to bring new and exciting books, equipment and programs to Odle. As part of the executive board, the VP for Fundraising will attend monthly PTSA meetings. He or she will work closely with our teachers, administrators and the Grants Committee Chair to develop funding priorities for the year. The VP for Fundraising and his or her committee will manage the Fall and Spring fundraisers--both of which were "Pass the Hat" campaigns this year. The outgoing VP has a trove of information (mailers, flyers, etc.) to help you with these campaigns, and the Publicity Chair is available, too. Do you have new or different ideas for raising money? The VP for Fundraising may make suggestions to the Board for new fundraising programs. Interested? Please email odleptsa@hotmail.com

Webmaster

If you can give a few hours a week (often even less) and have web design or management skills, the Odle Webmaster position is for you!  The PTSA website provides necessary information for the community to stay involved with and support our school. This year's webmaster will "graduate" from Odle, and we are looking for someone to take over the site. The webmaster is responsible for putting content provided by PTSA officers on the site, but beyond that, the position is yours to have fun with! The job can be as simple as maintaining the current look of the site or you can choose to develop a new design. Interested? Please email odleptsa@hotmail.com.

Reflections Chair

The PTA Reflections program gives students the opportunity to create works of art for fun and recognition.  Students submit artwork to their local PTA.  The outstanding entries at the school level advance to the city, state and possibly even to nationals!  Art entries may be submitted in one of six areas: dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, and the visual arts.

We can participate in this great program if we have an Odle parent willing to be the Reflections Chair. Learn more at PTAReflections.org. Email odleptsa@hotmail.com with questions about this volunteer position.

Snack Donations to Odle's Math and Counseling Departments

Our Vice Principal and his team report that your snack donations are making a huge difference after school for some of our hungry kids. Please continue to keep this need in mind the next time you see something on sale at Costco.

Be the Bridge" Book Drive

Odle will be hosting three different summer academic programs for students --Summer Success Academy, Starting Strong, and Nine Months to Ninth Grade. Our teachers hope to send students in all three programs home with books so they can continue reading throughout the summer.  Before June 1, please bring your new or gently used books to Odle and place them in the box near the main office.   Odle coordinator: Shaila Shetty (zenitha_s@hotmail.com; 425-445-3226).

Youth Eastside Services (YES) : Counseling Services Available

  • Does your teen need help coping with school, stress, or other life happenings?
  • Did you know there is a YES counselor available each week at Odle to meet with students and families?

YES is a full service counseling agency in Bellevue (www.youtheastsideservices.org) . For many families, finding a counselor that fits their needs and arranging transportation to a counseling agency can be difficult tasks. We are glad to have a YES counselor onsite at Odle to meet with students and families.

If you are interested in these counseling services for your Odle student and you qualify for Medicaid coupons, please contact your school counselor. You may reach the school counselors through Odle's main office line: 425-456-6600

If parents want counseling and they do not qualify for Medicaid coupons, they can call us and be referred to either the YES agency or other counselors.
