Odle Spring Fundraiser - MARCH MAGIC!
Our March Magic "Pass the Hat" Fundraiser is here! The Odle PTSA is raising funds to benefit every student. Among the requests we want to meet are additional Young Readers Choice books, which are extremely popular with the students. Odle's Langauge Arts teachers promote the books, and students can vote for their favorite titles in balloting from throughout the Pacific Northwest, as part of the nation's oldest youth book choice awards event.
The school district supplies the school library with two copies each of book, which leads to overwhelmingly long waits to read these popular books. This year, the Odle PTSA funded an additional 96 YRC books (22 different titles), enabling the students to access these wonderful books and participate in the YRC balloting. Some specific titles you might have seen your student reading include:
- The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan
- Halo by Alexandra Adornetto
- The Second Trial by Rosemarie Boll
- The Strange Case of Origami Yoda by Tom Angleberger
- The Cardturner by Louis Sachar
- Heist Society by Ally Carter
- Smile by Raina Telgemeier
Any amount you can give will make a difference for our kids! Look for our donation box at the school office, or go to odleptsa.org and donate via PayPal. Thank you!!

THANK YOU to TARGET for supporting the Odle Success Initiative
A big thank you to the Target store in Factoria for their generous donation of a gift card to the Odle Success Initiative. The Target donation will be used to purchase healthy snacks for children staying after school. A Target representative said, "We appreciate being able to help our community. BIWA EXCHANGE IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER
This coming April, in four short weeks, for spring break, is our traditional Biwa Exchange Program. Biwa is a cultural exchange program between Odle Middle School and middle school students from Nagahama, Japan. This exciting program has been an Odle tradition for 21 years! Due to the cost of the program, students from low-income homes have tended to self-select to not participate in years past. It is our goal that the Biwa Exchange Program truly represents and reflects the wonderful diversity of our community and is able to include students from many of the different ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds housed at Odle.
HOW CAN YOU HELP? SUPPORT THE FUNDRAISING EFFORTS! Although fundraising efforts are still ongoing, we are concerned that the cost might be too much for some of our students. Therefore, we are asking for your support! We would like to set up a scholarship fund for current and future Odle students who participate in the program. Please consider supporting the program in one of three ways:
· Donation: Donating to the Biwa Exchange Program to help us establish this scholarship fund. Donations can submitted in the Main Office with Liliana Medina. Please make checks payable to Odle Middle School with "Biwa Donation" written on the memo line.
· Order a First Aid Kit: Purchasing a First Aid Kit from one of our Biwa students or by ordering them from the packet in the main office. First Aid Kits range in price from $10 -$99 and include kits for the home, car, business, or travel. The sale will be held from March 7 - 22. Students receive 50% profit from all items except business products. Business products earn students 30% profit. Purchased items will be delivered approximately 2 weeks after the sale has ended.
· Purchase an Odle T-shirt: We have a few Odle T-Shirts in sizes Small to X-Large available for purchase at lunches. T-shirts are only $12.00.
WE DON'T WANT KIDS THAT ARE SIGNED UP TO ATTEND IN 4 WEEKS TO MISS OUT! It is our hope that this fund will allow students, regardless of financial ability, to be a part of this amazing cultural experience! We have one child that is close to attaining their financial goal and is just $500 short. Please don't let this student miss out on this amazing opportunity! We need your help!
See Ms. Yaeger (yaegera@bsd405.org) or Mrs. Farkas (farkask@bsd405.org) if you have specific questions or concerns.

Thank You Principal McDowell
Odle PTSA would like to thank Eric McDowell for giving a principal coffee on March 6 for current and incoming families on STEM and registration. Parents commented that they received a lot of good information. Our principal provided the treats for this one and PTSA provided the Starbucks coffee. Thanks to everyone who attended.

Volunteer Needs
Do you love to read? For the past several years, Odle PTSA has organized a "Be a Bridge" book drive, putting books in the hands of hundreds of students. Odle will be hosting three different summer academic programs for struggling students (Summer Success Academy, Starting Strong, and Nine Months to Ninth Grade) and would love to be able to enhance the program by promoting literacy in the home. Our teachers hope to send students in all three programs home with books so they can continue reading throughout the summer.
Please contact Shaila Shetty (zenitha_s@hotmail.com) if you are able to help coordinate this effort for Odle PTSA.

Viking Hut Volunteers Urgently Needed
Please email our volunteer coordinator, Whitney Devine cwdevine57@gmail.com, if you can help in the Viking Hut one day a week or once a month. Whitney will pass all the names along to Cathi Hervey who is our Viking Hut chair. It's an easy job and a great way to be involved without "embarrassing" your middle schooler! The Hut has been closed more than usual because of a shortage of volunteers.

Bellevue School District News
We have received information about opportunities for parent involvement. These opportunities are a great way for parents to get involved and to learn more about what is happening in the district and community.
Eastside Pathways School Readiness Collaborative
The EP School Readiness Collaborative is looking into ways we, as a community, can ensure all kids are prepared for kindergarten. The collaborative would like to bring in a BSD elementary school parent to join the discussion and provide input from the parent's point of view. The representative would ideally be someone who has been involved in the PTA or other community building programs and someone who could attend the meetings and report on what is happening to the Bellevue PTSA Council to keep the other PTA leaders apprised of what is happening and how PTAs can help.
Meetings are monthly (usually the second Monday of the month at 1PM)
If interested or if more information is needed, please contact Cathy Habib at cathy.l.habib@gmail.com

Friends of Odle Music (FOOM) News
Your Donations At Work
Many thanks to your support, FOOM has bought two violins, one cello and one oboe and new choir songs for Odle's music department year to date. If your child has outgrown his/her instrument, please consider donating them to Odle by contacting the music teachers.
Seattle Symphony Open Rehearsal Field Trip
On February 5, more than one hundred Odle Academy Band and Orchestra students attended the Seattle Symphony Open Rehearsal at the Benaroya Hall in Seattle. It's a valuable learning experience for students to see how professionals rehearse and perform. On behalf of the teachers and students, we are very thankful for the following band and orchestra parents who've made their Tuesday available to chaperon the group:
Laurie Beck, Bob Cornell, Alice Gu, Jennifer Huang, Vicki Liao, Shirley Lim, Tao Ren, Barbara Skotte, Renée Smart, Jenny Zheng
Odle Symphony Retreat
Given the successful holiday CD sale, we hosted the first retreat at the Jubilee Reach Center for our 150+ Odle Symphony students on February 9, 2013. Our orchestra and band students received valuable coaching during both sectional and group rehearsal at the retreat. This further prepared them for the upcoming Northwest Orchestra Festival. More than fifty finest high school orchestra groups will attend the Festival each year, and Odle will be the only middle school competing in the junior high school full orchestra division. To ensure a smooth running retreat with 7 sectional rooms, one group rehearsal room and two Odle Symphony groups of students following tight schedule between rooms, we could not have done it with our capable and dedicated chaperons for spending their Saturday at the retreat.
Lesley Bacon, Bob Cornell, Luanne Lemmer, Vicki Liao, Svetlana Loksh, Dan Phillips, Scott Phillips, Barbara Skotte, Jim Zhao
Upcoming Events
March is national Music In Our Schools Month-and as always, we have multiple performances coming up. Please save the dates and attend the concerts coming up on March 7, 20, 21, 28. You don't want to miss these concerts especially if you can't be at Northwest Orchestra Festival (in Gresham, Oregon) or Frontier Junior High School Jazz Festival, and/or the District Festivals for Band, Choir and Orchestra.
