PRINCIPAL COFFEE THIS WEEK: STEM & REGISTRATION

Come have coffee with the Principal to learn about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) classes as well as other registration information - open to ALL families no matter what program your child is in. Because of the exciting new news that STEM is coming to Odle next Fall and because you may have questions before making registration decisions, Eric McDowell and PTSA have thrown a principal coffee on the calendar for this week! It's Wednesday, March 6 from 7:00-8:00 am at Odle. Please check in at the main office to see where to go. We will probably be in the new family connections center or in the library if attendance is large. Coffee and breakfast treats will be provided!

PARENT NIGHT ON NUTRITON FOR TEENS AND TWEENS

NUTRITION for TWEENS AND TEENS:

A PTSA Sponsored Parent Night

If "You are What You Eat," Why Doesn't Junk Food Make My Teenager Sweet?

Wednesday, March 13th at 7:00pm, Odle Library

Marta DeWulf, a nationally recognized nutritionist, will speak about the challenges we all face setting healthy habits for our teens and tweens. Among the topics covered:

  • Establishing healthy habits for the long-term
  • Ensuring kids who don't like milk or vegetables get enough calcium
  • Avoiding power struggles at mealtime
Las Familias Unidas de Odle

An evening for all of our Spanish-speaking families at Odle will be held on April 2, 2012 in the MUR. This will include a keynote speaker and parent sessions on different topics. This event is brought to our families as a joint project of Odle's new Action Team For Partnerships (ATP) which aims to engage families and the community in ways that support student achievement and success.

The ATP committee is made up of Silvia Honores from BSD, Liliana Benavides from our new Family Connections Center, our principals, teacher representatives, PTSA representatives and Eastside Pathways. Please watch for more information soon. If you are a parent interested in serving on this committee, please contact PTSA or the Odle main office.

Odle Student-Family Directories Have Arrived!

Bright blue directories were delivered to students during 7th period on the Friday before break.  Check your child's backpack. If your child did not bring one home, have them ask their 7th period teacher.  If you still can't locate your copy, please stop in the Odle main office.

Thank you to parent Beverly Mitchell for putting them together, getting them printed, labeled and delivered!  They look great!  Thank you also to our registrar Cynthia Vaca for her positive attitude and willingness to help us with whatever we needed.

Odle PTSA - The Most Rewarding Job in Town!

We are looking for friendly parents who are willing to help us in 2013-2014.  We do a lot for Odle and can't do everything without teamwork.  If you would like to know what positions are currently open and talk to someone about your interests and time available, please contact one of our nominating committee members.   PTSA provides training, and no prior experience is necessary.

Viking Hut Volunteers Urgently Needed

Please email our volunteer coordinator, Whitney Devine cwdevine57@gmail.com, if you can help in the Viking Hut one day a week or once a month. Whitney will pass all the names along to Cathi Hervey who is our Viking Hut chair.  It's an easy job and a great way to be involved without "embarrassing" your middle schooler!    The Hut has been closed more than usual because of a shortage of volunteers. Cathi can train you if you let her know before your first shift, and you can also be paired with an experienced person.

Your Donations At Work

Many thanks to your support, FOOM has bought two violins, one cello and one oboe and new choir songs for Odle's music department year to date.  If your child has outgrown his/her instrument, please consider donating them to Odle by contacting the music teachers.

Seattle Symphony Open Rehearsal Field Trip

On February 5, more than one hundred Odle Academy Band and Orchestra students attended the Seattle Symphony Open Rehearsal at the Benaroya Hall in Seattle.  It's a valuable learning experience for students to see how professionals rehearse and perform.  On behalf of the teachers and students, we are very thankful for the following band and orchestra parents who've made their Tuesday available to chaperon the group:

Laurie Beck, Bob Cornell, Alice Gu, Jennifer Huang, Vicki Liao, Shirley Lim, Tao Ren, Barbara Skotte, Renée Smart, Jenny Zheng

Odle Symphony Retreat

Given the successful holiday CD sale, we hosted the first retreat at the Jubilee Reach Center for our 150+ Odle Symphony students on February 9, 2013.  Our orchestra and band students received valuable coaching during both sectional and group rehearsal at the retreat.  This further prepared them for the upcoming Northwest Orchestra Festival.  More than fifty finest high school orchestra groups will attend the Festival each year, and Odle will be the only middle school competing in the junior high school full orchestra division.   To ensure a smooth running retreat with 7 sectional rooms, one group rehearsal room and two Odle Symphony groups of students following tight schedule between rooms, we could not have done it with our capable and dedicated chaperons for spending their Saturday at the retreat.

Lesley Bacon, Bob Cornell, Luanne Lemmer, Vicki Liao, Svetlana Loksh, Dan Phillips, Scott Phillips, Barbara Skotte, Jim Zhao

Upcoming Events

March is national Music In Our Schools Month-and as always, we have multiple performances coming up.  Please save the dates and attend the concerts coming up on  March 7, 20, 21, 28.  You don't want to miss these concerts especially if you can't be at Northwest Orchestra Festival (in Gresham, Oregon) or Frontier Junior High School Jazz Festival, and/or the District Festivals for Band, Choir and Orchestra.
