Gilchrist Center Releases its FY14 Mid-year Progress Report
The Gilchrist Center has just issued its FY14 Mid-year Progress Report, in which we monitored the Center's work in the first half of the fiscal year and we compared the results with results from previous years. It is a great tool to evaluate how close we are to fulfilling our goals for the year, and to address areas that present weaknesses. We hope that you will find this report informative! Overwhelming Demand for Spring Computer Literacy Classes in Gaithersburg. The Gilchrist Center held the Spring registration session for the computer classes at its Gaithersburg site on April 5. This is the second time that these classes are being offered at the site since its opening in January this year. An overwhelming number of people came to register for two 12-seat classes, some of them started lining up outside of the building as early as 7 am, well before the library 10 am scheduled opening hour.
We are happy and sad to say that these classes filled almost immediately, and unfortunately, a lot of people left without being able to sign up for a class.
Because of the shortage of computer literacy classes offered in the county and the huge demand, especially noted among the Gaithersburg community, the Gilchrist Center decided to increase its offerings and recruit extra volunteer instructors to add classes. Those who are in the waitlist will be contacted one by one and we expect these classes to start in mid May.
We are very excited about the community's response to our presence in the Gaithersburg area and we hope to continue serving the community and meet its needs! You can call the Center at 240-777-4940 to learn about all our programs and offering, as well as sharing with us any suggestions you may have!

Clergy Response Team Partners with Fire and Rescue ServicesMembers of the Clergy Response Committee consisting of Imam Mohamed Abdullahi, Rev. Lynn Strauss and Dr. Hedieh Mirahmadi met on April 18 with Fire Chief Steven Lohr and Assistant Chief John Dimitriadis resulting in a promising partnership. The Interfaith Community Liaison, Rev. Kaseman, facilitated the meeting out of concern for the fire fighters who are putting their lives on the line and in recent months have needed to remove bodies from destroyed apartments. Chief Lohr expressed appreciation noting the increased diversity of Montgomery County residents and fire fighters who would benefit from forging relationships with clergy from Eastern and Western faith traditions. In addition to developing an interfaith chaplaincy program interest was expressed in including instruction in cultural competency focusing on ethnic and faith traditions as part of training for the Fire and Rescue Services. Plans were set for linking clergy with the Critical Incident Stress Management Team and for gaining representation from the Fire Department on the Emergency Preparedness Coalition. Everyone present sensed they were kindred spirits and appreciated both the growing diversity of the greater community and the interest in working collaboratively for the benefit of all. Recognizing and Responding to Persons with Mental IllnessA workshop on "Recognizing and Responding to Persons with Mental Illness" was held on April 24 in the Civic Building in Silver Spring. We Work for You!
I was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Montgomery County. Growing up here, I never could have imagined that so many extraordinarily talented people from every corner of the globe would come here to my home county. Every day, I think of how lucky my family and I have been to live here and experience the educational, cultural, and economic benefits of our diverse community. We are building something very special. We are working hard every day to build America's most welcoming community. Last month, we welcomed two new members to the Office of Community Partnerships staff - Latino liaison Nestor Alvarenga and Senior Fellow and Middle Eastern liaison Mimi Hassanein. We had a get to know each other session recently and each person introduced themselves and shared their life stories. We reflect Montgomery County in coming here from across the nation and around the world: Silver Spring, MD (Julian Norment); Paris, France (Diane Vu); Pasaquina, La Union, El Salvador (Nestor Alvarenga); Freetown, Sierra Leone, West Africa (Daniel Koroma); Endicott NY (Molly Callaway); Cairo, Egypt (Mimi Hassanein); Iga Ueno City, Mie Prefecture, Japan (Kaori Hirakawa); Harvey, North Dakota (Kasey Kaseman); and New York City, NY (Austin Heyman). The life journeys, many of them passing through our Montgomery College, are inspiring. Please remember that we work for you. Here is a link to the contact information for the OCP staff. And here is a link to the bios of the OCP staff. When you need us, please get in touch. Together we are all better. Building Community One Garden at a Time I love my job. Working with amazing community leaders every day and supporting our outstanding County Executive as he helps us build a beloved community makes nearly every day a joyful experience. Some days we work on really large issues of immigrant integration and social justice. On other days, we work on projects that might seem small but are in fact the seeds that produce the fruits of our wonderful community. On April 19, I got to experience a very special moment. Inspired by Michelle Obama's healthy eating initiative, the County Executive dedicated Sandy's Garden, a community garden at Halpine Hamlet, a Montgomery Housing Partnership property in Rockville. The community garden is named in honor of Sanford Slavin (seated in photo below) who built these garden apartments nearly 50 years ago. Sandy Spring Builders and Ruppert Landscape donated their services to build the garden. Additional support came from the Sanford and Doris Slavin Foundation. Shown with Mr. Slavin, Halpine Hamlet residents, and County Executive Leggett are Phil Leibovitz of Sandy Spring Builders, MHP President Robert Goldman, and Slavin Foundation executive and Mayor of Somerset Jeffrey Slavin.
