Good Deeds Day March 10
|
The Jewish community of Greater Washington will join volunteers from around the world in a community day of service, Good Deeds Day. Possible projects include: food sorting at Manna, park cleanup, tree planting, senior assistance, Mitzvah projects, and much more.

Vehicle Donation
Montgomery County Public Schools Automotive Technology students are in need of vehicle donations. You will be providing the automotive students with a valuable educational experience, while giving yourself the added tax deduction. The Automotive Trades Foundation runs a licensed used car dealership. 100 percent of the proceeds from the 3 yearly student-run auto sales are returned directly to the ATF in order to support ongoing student automotive education.

 March 22 is World Water Day! This is an annual event which focuses attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. Use the month of March time to think about issues here and aboard that deal with access to clean water. Amman Imann will host the 7th annual "A Walk for Water" on May 11th to help raise funds to build wells for those living in the Azawak of West Africa. The walk will take place at the Locust Grove Nature Center at Cabin John Regional Park in Bethesda, Maryland. Students and their families can come together to walk 3 miles on the wooded trails. Help keep our local watershed clean by supporting volunteer clean up efforts with Washington Sanitary Suburban Commission. You can also learn more about water issues at the WSSC's H2O Summit on March 16th. |
The Montgomery County Volunteer Center will be promoting environmentally focused projects during the entire month of April as a time for volunteers to get engaged in the recognition of Earth Day.

Don't miss out on the Earth Month opportunities that happen at the beginning of April. The Alice Ferguson Foundation's Annual Potomac River Watershed Clean Up takes place Saturday, April 6th. There will be clean ups happening all around the DC Metro area. Don't miss out on all the excitement!

Thanks to all those who responded to the call! We have received so many amazing nominations! Nominations are being reviewed and award recipients will be announced in mid-March.
Please join us in celebrating volunteerism in Montgomery County at the Montgomery Serves Awards ceremony at 6:30PM on Monday, April 29, 2013 at Imagination Stage in Bethesda. The event is free and open to the public, although seating is limited and registration is required.
This ceremony is organized by the Montgomery County Volunteer Center, and the Corporate Volunteer Council of Montgomery County (CVC-MC), and is sponsored by the Fund for Montgomery. Agency Spotlight: Mercy Health Clinic |
Mercy Health Clinic is a free, not-for-proft, non-sectarian, community based primary health care provider serving uninsured, low-income adult residents of Montgomery County, Maryland. The Clinic has many dedicated volunteers and is always in need of bilingual volunteers.
The Clinic relies on support from individuals and organizations who generally donate their time, talent and resources to the clinic and the patients it serves.

- Spanish speaking Interpreters needed for patient-doctor visits
- Data entry to help with tracking Clinic and Patient progress

County Executive Isiah Leggett announced his "English Language
on Demand" initiative in his recent State of the County address.
This initiative encourages "residents to become 'teaching volunteers' in our County's English language learning network." Get involved with the Language Corps and use your language skills to help others in the community.

March 10 - Help the Azaleas - For over fifty years, beautiful azaleas have thrived at WSSC's Azalea Garden. But weeds have also found the garden and we need your help in getting rid of the weeds. Volunteers under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteers should bring water to drink .
March 16 - Walk for Wishes Volunteers - Join in the second annual Walk for Wishes, taking place on the National Mall! The Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic's 2013 Walk for Wishes is a community-wide celebration and effort to grant wishes for local children with life-threatening medical conditions. Volunteers will help with set-up and registration, greet, direct, and encourage walkers during the event, and assist with tear down and clean up.
March 23 - Olney Mill Clean Up - Volunteers will help pick up trash from the Olney Mill Community common areas and parks and a few adventurous individuals will collect trash from the stream beds and ponds. Be sure to dress appropriately (you may get dirty and/or wet). Please bring work gloves if you have them. You should wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts to avoid scratches from branches.

March 28 - Wetland Plant Nursery Maintenance - Help is needed to take care of the nursery that grows plants used to restore the Anacostia River wetlands! Work will include some planting, mulching, and other light maintenance. This event will require walking (roughly a mile to the worksite), standing, bending, and lifting for long periods of time.

March 29 - Egg Hunt at Meadowside - Meadowside Nature Center is having their annual Egg Hunt, that has a focus on nature and spring time. Volunteers will help with crafts, hiding eggs, and making sure our family guests are having a fun and educational time.

March 30 - Easter Family Event - There is lots to do at this family friendly event including egg-hunts, games, bounce house, face paint, pictures with the Easter bunny and snacks. Volunteers must be comfortable interacting with children and adults. Volunteers will assist with egg-runs, hospitality areas, food service, and running and oversight of games/prizes. *Takes place during MCPS Spring Break

Selected Ongoing Opportunities
 Denotes opportunities that are approved to provide MCPS Student Service Learning (SSL) Hours. Greenhouse Gardener March to May - Black Hill Regional Park has it's own native plant greenhouse. Volunteers are needed weekly during workdays, usually Tuesday mornings from 9-11 am, beginning March 1 and ending May 1st. Volunteers may also need to help monitor the greenhouse one early morning or evening slot per week for a period of 15 minutes. Volunteers will be growing plants for use in display gardens. Plant propagation experience preferred, but not required.
Event Promotion - Fresh Start Science is devoted to helping disadvantaged single mothers find self-esteem and value in themselves to take action to get education, good jobs and to be an excellent parent. Volunteers are needed now to help promote a black tie fundraising event that takes place on April 20th. Several opportunities are available including to help promote the raffle, revitalize the website, and serve as a videographer for the event.
Drivers for Seniors - The Senior Connection has an urgent need for volunteers in the Bethesda and Silver Spring areas to help older adults "age in community." The nonprofit group matches volunteers with their neighbors 62 and older. Volunteers provide free, escorted transportation to medical appointments, help with grocery shopping and other errands, while they are visiting to share companionship.
Foreign Language Teacher Assistant - Big Learning FLES is looking for students to help make foreign language classes fun and entertaining. Gain valuable experience volunteering as a Teacher Assistant in your local elementary school. This is a great opportunity for students fluent or proficient in either Spanish, French or Chinese and are willing to work with small children. Volunteers will help organize activities and games and assist with classroom management.
Basic Literacy Tutors - Jubilee Association is looking for individuals who have experience working with adults with intellectual or other developmental disabilities to teach basic English literacy skills in a small group setting.
Volunteer at Cancer Center - Facing a cancer diagnosis can be stressful and life-changing. The Aquilino Cancer Center is designed to provide a comprehensive cancer treatment that addresses a patient's mind, body and spirit. Volunteers will help in providing a soothing environment by assisting with greeting, escorting, monitoring waiting rooms, language interpreting, data entry and other clerical duties.
