Haulout Updates
Date Change (both Crane and Rail)
Crane Haulout is now October 21 and 22(Friday/Saturday) with the Sunday as our customary (rarely used) contingency day. The Railyard will also Haulout that weekend and follow their customary Saturday/Sunday routine.

With Thanksgiving being a little earlier this year, and the prognosis is for a warmer than usual Fall, we have postponed Haulout one week so that the Thanksgiving weekend will be a full sailing weekend before putting the boat away. I know that some will have made plans based on the normal one-week-after-Thanksgiving timing, and I regret any inconvenience that this change will cause.  However, my quick  walk around survey last week indicated strong interest in hauling two weeks after Thanksgiving.

Mast Up
We have agreed to run a larger trial of Mast Up hauling this year, due to popular demand.  A limit of 15 boats on the crane will be accepted, and a smaller number on the Railway. The common charge will be $11 per linear foot to cover the additional time on the Large Crane. Any boats wanting Mast Up currently on Small Crane have to be moved to the Large Crane  We have estimated the additional time required based on the 2013/2014 trial. Should our process improve to make these estimates overly conservative, we will revisit the charge following launch in the spring.

If you are interested, there will be a form available outside the office to be completed and signed, and returned no later than September 10 (also attached here). If more boats subscribe than we can accommodate, a selection will be made based on several factors, including boat size, mast size, seniority. The goal is to fine tune the process and thus a representative selection of boats is needed.

Change in Storage Needs (beyond Mast Up)
Any member wishing to change their boat storage needs for this winter must inform the office no later than September 10.  A cc to myself (Roy.Little@bell.net) or Bruce Morrison (bruce_morrison@rogers.com) would be appreciated. We will otherwise assume that if we looked after you last year we will do the same this year. If you stored elsewhere last year, you need to explicitly let us know that you are coming back as we will not assume so.

Many thanks and enjoy the rest of the season!

ABYC Board Elections - Fall 2016
Nomination Committee:  Focus on the Board-
Rear Commodore

August 31st!  Wow this summer has gone by quickly. Our September AGM is just around the corner.  Your nomination committee is still actively working to drum up interest within our membership with regards to taking on some of our important leadership roles. Last Week, Commodore Bob Hedley shared some of his personal thoughts with respect to his time on the board. This week, Rear Commodore Paul Brennan shares his personal thoughts. My hope is that you will be inspired to contact any member of the committee or Paul himself to discuss further.

Rear Commodore at ABYC - Election in one month!

With only a month to go to elections, I'm told the nominating committee has still not identified any potential Rear Commodore candidates.

Here's why I have done this for almost 5 years: it's FUN, it's REWARDING, and our on the water programs are what makes the difference between a YACHT CLUB and a MARINA.
To me, an ABM just wouldn't be the same as the ABYC we proudly belong to.

Mostly, the job is cheerleader and mentor for our very successful programs: Racing, Cruising, Junior Sailing School/Racing Teams, Keelboat Learn-to-Sail, Co-Op (Keelboat & Dinghy). Each program has a director or chair or coordinator that takes care of it and the associated equipment, your job is to support them in large decisions, major problem resolution, and budgets. You also get to experiment with new programs, like our SUP school. Rear Commodore is also responsible for our Corinthian Fund, and you get to give money to members who are traveling afar to become better sailors and represent our club!

As a board member, you also help to make some of the big decisions that keep ABYC on the right course. Rear Commodore is a flag position at ABYC, which comes with a parking space and free burgee, to go along with a few extra tasks, like signing cheques. Imagine the fun signing cheques that spend OTHER PEOPLE's money on beer, booze, and boat parts?

The job description DOES NOT include any work as race officer, nor does it require that you be a racer (I enjoy that myself, but a rear commodore with an interest in any of our programs can be successful).  Overall, a board position is a commitment of 15-30 hours/month, and Rear Commodore is no different.

I'd be more than happy to talk with or provide my annual to-do list to anyone interested, and my ongoing support to the successful candidate.

Paul Brennan
Current-and-about-to-be-Former Rear Commodore, ABYC

Paul certainly does make a compelling case for running for the position of  REAR Commodore!  Who's interested!!!

Bill Logie

To say goodbye to a man among men
Makes it difficult to know even where to begin
Bill was a classic and dear to us all

He had a smile right up to the end
His character and friendship would never bend
After losing Lil he almost lost pace
His love for sailing kept him in the race
He now joins Lil in that lake up above
Let it make us happy for he's with his one true love

Remember the good times for all they are worth
Billy left us good memories for his short time on earth
Goodbye my friend for we will weep
Thanks for the memories for they are ours to keep

Cruise Report
A Thank You Note From the EYC Cruising Fleet

Just a wee note to say thanks a million for our cruise to ABYC. We were made to feel most welcome from our initial land visit until we left on Sunday. Adrian and his team couldn't have been more helpful. In fact, he personally went out of his way to resolve a weed / prop issue encountered by one of our cruisers.
Your cruise controller ( a very efficient young lady) reallocated our single hander when her original dock proved a challenge. And then hopped aboard to take her to her new dock and assist!! Very impressive.

We loved the area we were in. It was perfect. All of our cruisers were impressed and will return to spend cash at your restaurant and bar next time!

Please pass on our thanks to all.

Kind regards
Colette Boyle, Commodore EYC

Anchors Away in Humber Bay

Note from the Cruising Captains: This was the first year that we worked co-operatively with EYC to assist each other by getting cruising boats off the docks during our respective club regattas. A special thank you to Colin Andrews who tracked down and identified the ABYC racers who planned to attend EYC regatta so that Adrian could know in advance which additional slips would be available to accommodate the incoming EYC cruising fleet boats.

It was Fiesta night this past Saturday at 'Hombre Bay' for the annual Anchors Away in Humber Bay cruise, and the only anchoring cruise of the season. It did not disappoint as the weather gods cooperated and the bay was clear for the seven ABYC anchoring adventurers to set their hooks for a fun-filled night.
The beach party started with a happy hour featuring a selection of appetizers and the (in)famous Hombre Bay Sangria. At dusk, which is coming way too early now, the bonfire was lit for cooking and to set the mood for the rest of the evening. Thanks to all who contributed to this pot luck event.

Race Committee

Canadian Opti Championship
The Canadian Opti Championship has come and gone and what an experience it's been. I don't want to think about how much time and effort has gone into planning and organizing this regatta. Kudos to the organizing committee for putting on a terrific regatta. There were times when I thought I wasn't going to be able to put a full RC team together but, in the end, we got the job done. With two courses, we ran a practice day, five days of racing and a day of team racing, which was very popular with the competitors and Race Committee alike. We lucked out big-time with the weather and had a great regatta due, in no small part, to the hard working people of the Race Committee:

RO's: Paul Brennan (PRO) and Rebecca Crumlish

Committee Boats: Brian Chapman, Susan Hannah, Liz MacIntyre, Fred Obedkoff, Mary Jacobs, Max Smith, Leah Russell, Corinne Lusty, Helen Phillips, Lynn Kaminski, Siegi Kaminski, Martin Staadecker, Allie Baxter, Richard Coutts (THSC)

Pin/Mark Boats: Paul Clissold (PCYC), Nick Bailey, Stan Gap, Bob Wilson, Janet Geisberger (NYC), Mary Jayne Campbell (NYC), Tom Shenstone, John Dillon, Stuart Gibbons, Mike Leroux, Kevin Armstrong, Colin Andrews, Yves Tremblay

Finish Boat: Dave Steenbergen, Bob Hedley, Gus Gillespie, Sylvia Mayer (PCYC), Paul Bark, Alison Brannen

And last, but certainly not least, Scorer: Shaun Carey. Shaun spent countless hours adapting the online scoring system for this regatta and I'm sure he as a few grey hairs to show for it.

Thank you everybody. THANK YOU! It was a hard slog and a lot to ask of people, but you came through for the kids. There are no words for how grateful I am to every one of you. Thanks also to Regatta Chair Laura Goddard and Mike Goldfarb for looking after us all and putting up with my hissy fits (who?... ME??) Your patience and understanding were very much appreciated. Thanks for a great event.

QCYC Open, Saturday, September 10
This is just a one day event for us. I need one or two more people for the Committee boat.

ABYC Black Swan/Whiplash Challenge - Sunday, September 11
I need a couple of more people, including a driver for the Sarah Ashbridge.

Albacore Canadians - Friday, September 16 - Sunday, September 18
Our 2nd Canadian Championship of the season. I need two more people for the Committee boat, as well as mark layers.

These events are coming up fast so please let me know ASAP if you can help.

Thanks,

EYC Regatta Report

Doublehanded Race Team

This was a very successful event by all accounts, including the usual excellent EYC barbecue.

PHRF, 1 Design course racing as well as the IRC North American championships which attracted 83 competitor yachts, including some very fast American boats.

The winds were light on Saturday but picked up on the Sunday, especially for the 14 mile IRC point to point coastal race. Results as usual are on the LORC.org web site along with lots of excellent photos thanks to John Crawley, including this one of ABYC's Starwatch up against it in IRC3!

Also competing for ABYC at this regatta were Martin Gibb's Consort (C&C 27-5) and Paul Angus Bark's Crime Scene (flag winner in the Saturday PHRF FS D course Racing).

Next up is the highly anticipated QCYC Party and Regatta with the annual PHRF challenge trophy won by ABYC two years ago! Come race (seriously) September 10th.

Finally, on behalf of the entire 2016 Canadian Optimist Championship, the volunteers, competitors and their families, Thank You to the members of ABYC for your patience and support and during this event. It is greatly appreciated!

From: Paul Brennan, PRO, 2016 Canadian Optimist Championship & RO, Championship Fleet
It is with total amazement and big smiles that I report for 5.5 days of scheduled racing. We raced for 5.5 days! Before the event even started, we had contingency plans for one bad day, two bad days, and three bad weather/no wind days at the event, but all of the contingency plans went out the window and we just kept racing!

With 97 young sailors in the Championship fleet, we had to split the fleet to get good competitive starts.  To sort out Gold and Silver fleets, the easy way is to shuffle the sailors into two fleets based on ages, then again each night of the qualifying series based on results. With only two days scheduled for the qualifying series, that meant only one performance-based shuffle and many sailors wouldn't get a chance to compete against each other. We went further, splitting the group in four, and having them sail round-robin against each other, with another shuffle at the end of the first day. Most sailors got a chance to race against everyone else twice in our qualifying series, which was five races in conditions ranging from 5 to 15+ knots, determining our Gold and Silver fleets for the Finals.

Next was Lay Day for the Greens, and Team Racing for those who wanted to from the Championship fleet. 14 teams of sailors competed against each other in a double elimination format. After 23 races (no, that's not a misprint) in 5.5 hours, the wind died. We ran Operation P (Popsicle) to cool our competitors off, then the wind came back (from the other direction), so we reset the course in record time and went into overtime to complete a 24th race to determine the medal winners.

The next day the Finals started. Day One was simply perfect; 8-12 knots from a direction that didn't change by more than 10 degrees all day (a coach from Ireland said it was the best sailing day he'd ever seen in North America; ABYC can't take credit for it, but we did take advantage of it, running an extra race while the running was good). Day Two was significantly lighter, but when we got out on the water, things looked sailable. The first race was 4-5 knots and a bit patchy but all sailors completed within the time limits. We re-ran Operation P to cool everyone off, and the wind picked up to 6-8, and we got the last race in for the finals.

The RO job ended with the privilege of handing out trophies to a great many talented young sailors. I am sure that in the years to come some of them will be on bigger and shinier podiums!

My personal thanks to: Paul Clissold from PCYC and Janet Geisberger from NYC who brought mark boats and helpers, and backed up our start and finish lines; Rebecca Crumlish, who managed our Green Fleet; Shaun Carey, our Registrar and Scorer, who had extra work sorting out the qualifying flights; Brian Chapman of UK Halsey, whose loft made the stack of division flags and hundreds of ribbons needed to identify everyone in the qualifying, team, and final races; Molly Asseltine, who organized the race committee resources for both courses; all the ABYC committee boat folk (all new to team racing and round robins); the ABYC mark boat folk (some who had never done a trapezoid course before and managed admirably); Dave Steenbergen and the Finish boat team who recorded 45-50 boats in less than five minutes, 22 times in the four days; Commodore Bob who brought out Perseverance as the Finish boat; THSC who loaned us Shadow for our Green Fleet committee boat, and TS&CC, EYC, and Water Rats for safety boat/judge boat loans. Special mention to Safety Chief David Lewis and his team for keeping everyone safe, and Chief Judge Wendy Loat and her team for keeping everyone within the rules; both included members from clubs around the GTA and further afield.

From: Rebecca Crumlish, RO Green Fleet
After one practice race Friday and four days of racing, we completed 13 races. This is a training experience for the beginner/novice and young Green Fleet Optimists (our future sailors youngest age was 9).  We had 16 sailors from Canada and Florida USA CRYC (Coral Ridge Yacht Club) Elena Graham.  No official racing results were issued. On the water, our Green Team volunteers witnessed many wonderful memories from the young sailors - we were asked to come up with special nomination awards for the Presentation Ceremony - listed below:

All 16 Green Fleet sailors received a special medal reminding them of this event participation.

Trophy Award Keepers:
Overall / Top Sailor:  Dillon Soin (ABYC)
Most Improved Sailor: Zoe Folsetter (RHYC)
Sportsmanship Sailor: Connor Rodness (RCYC)

Other Special Recognition Mention:
Youngest Sailor: Jack Schauer (RCYC)
First Time Racing Regatta and Youngest Sailor:  Lauryn Carey (ABYC)
Courageous (Courage) Sailor: Ethan Gavasa-Tejerina (EYC)
Special Mention Sportsmanship Sailor: Callum Ruch (ABYC)

On behalf of the Green Fleet Race Committee - Thank you for this wonderful experience.

QCYC Open September 10

Hi ABYC'rs,

I have accepted our Sailing Committee's request to stay on as Chair of ABYC's annual OPEN Regatta for next year. We had a great regatta this year and, with an expanded team and much more time, we should be able to do it all again next May.

First however we need to live up to our 2016 inter-club PHRF Challenge with QCYC on September 10. Queen's City Yacht Club showed up on our dock in May with a flotilla of at least 13 boats. They sailed reasonably well however there seems to still be some doubt about who took the overall win. And, they still think they have a better OPEN party than us. Seriously.

It's time to quash any doubts. We need as many ABYC racers to show up at QCYC on September 10 and take home the trophy. The 2016 PHRF Challenge reinvents an age-old (friendly) sailing and racing rivalry between our clubs over many years, and ABYC's performance at QCYC September 10 will only generate a growing excitement for next year. We (ABYC Racers) need to do well. But we have to show up to win.

Please make every effort to put September 10 at QCYC on your calendar and let's do what ABYC always does so well: Show up, race, win, and above all have fun

The 2016 ABYC OPEN Regatta Team is gathering committed ABYC teams so please let us know you plan to race for ABYC. See you at QCYC September 10.
