Jackup Barge for Outfall Tunnel

Thank you to Dr. J.P. Harrison for providing additional information on the Jackup Barge's purpose. The good doctor provided two links for further information:

He also had some insightful comments:

"At 3.5km long, the tunnel will terminate beyond the end of the Spit. I reckon this is where the rig is currently drilling. But the tunnel will be 7m in diameter. That's more than a two storey building is high, and a 20 foot boat would fit crossways in the tunnel. In fact, any boat at ABYC would easily fit into the tunnel, so perhaps when they've finished (they'll bore from the shore outwards) we should ask them to turn the tunnel boring machine round, bore back to ABYC, and we'll have a superb subterranean indoor winter storage facility for our boats! We'll then be able to work on our boats all winter in warm, dry and well lit surroundings. And there'll be no raccoons. Perfect!"

We can dream!

ABYC Board Elections - Fall 2016
Nomination Committee:  Focus on the Board-
Vice Commodore, Marine Services

Our final article "focusing on the board" takes a closer look at the role of our VC - Marine Services. Once again, we are reaching out to our membership in the hopes to generate interest in joining Bob Hedley, Brian Meret, Mike MacDonald, and Past commodore Rick Humphrey on our board coming September!

Past... and Present Vice Commodores - Marine Services (to name a few): Erik Dullerud, Bruce Morrison, Bob Hedley, Roger Marsh or Rick Butt.

Worth noting... from our by-laws
4.02 Qualification - Each director shall be:
(a) eighteen (18) or more years of age, and
(b) a Senior member or Life member of the Club.
No member shall be elected as Commodore or Senior Vice-Commodore or Rear Commodore unless such member has at least a third (1/3) interest in a boat enrolled in the Club Fleet.

If that sounds like you... read on!

Vice Commodore, Marine Services
The club's by-law defines the role this way:

The Vice Commodore - Marine Services shall be responsible for the use of Water space used by the Club, including provision and maintenance of floating and permanent docks, allocation of space for all boats including dry-sailed boats according to Club policy, organization of haul-out and launch, winter storage, and provision and maintenance of all haul-out equipment (including the railway, winch rail-car, dinghy launch equipment and ways), facilities for dry-sailed boats, dinghy storage area, yard, including gas dock facility, grounds and landscaping, and the hiring and supervision of gas dock/yard staff, and shall, ex-officio, be a member of the Yard Management Committee, Harbour Management Committee and Landscaping Committee.

Prior Vice Commodores - Marine Services have said this position is one of great challenges and great rewards. Because the role affects every member directly, you get to know literally everyone and their boats. Building, supporting and maintaining strong committees is essential. Although the job culminates with each year's haul-out and launch, it goes on all year, working out how to accommodate major regattas and other events. Another aspect of the position is working with the Club Manager and the gas dock/yard staff, as well as other Board Members, to ensure our marine services are carried out effectively. While the job requires some technical understanding, it is essentially a matter of working with other members to anticipate, plan, organize, and execute all of the work required to ensure our harbour and yard are used to best advantage.

If this role appeals to you, please contact any member of the Nominating Committee.

Highland Yacht Club Cruise Summary
A Charming Weekend

With a perfect weather forecast for the weekend, a merry fleet of 19 boats (+1 land yacht) and more than 40 sailors set off Saturday morning to Highland Yacht Club with 15 knots of wind to fill the sails. Most boats arrived by early afternoon which allowed for some time at the Bluffer's Park beach or a breezy break from the heat at the club.

Before dinner, we were treated to - no, amazed by! - the unbelievable tricks and illusions by mentalist, Yan Markson. I thought for sure Mike Leroux was going to pour water all over himself, but no, the result was completely unexpected and like each of Yan's performances, the audience was left in awe and wonderment.

Following Yan's main act, he mingled with people and continued to surprise us with his magic while we enjoyed the appetizers and desserts made by our fellow cruisers.

Unfazed by the tough act to follow, Sophie and John (Johnny's Cabana) provided a delicious home-cooked meal of Beef and Vegetarian Artisanal Stuff Peppers and Feta Cheese Pies served with a broccoli salad and a chickpea salad. A special thanks for all the effort and kudos to them for hosting solo too!!

The warm, relaxing evening was ideal for socializing and many stayed up late chatting.
The weather Sunday morning was calmer and overcast but, being so close to home, members could linger longer than usual and still get back to ABYC in time to have lunch on the patio.
And just like that, pouf! the magical Highland Yacht Club cruise came to an end.

July Rendezvous at Trident Yacht Club
A small gathering (3 boats and 12 people) enjoyed the hospitality of TYC over two days (July 21/22) and had a great time sharing appetizers and a drink at the July Rendezvous.

Lots of stories also make for a very interesting gathering.

Thank you to those boats who worked their way from Toronto to the 1000 islands, and back to Trident, to spend time with friends from ABYC.

LYRA (Whitby) July 29, 30, 31
PCYC asked us if we could help them with a mark boat crew for the course racing (they're sending us a crew for the OPTI Cdns.) and I managed to find mark layers/drivers to cover the 3 days but still need crew to help them. I will happily take a different person for each day or the same for all 3 days - at this point any help is good. Please let me know NOW if you are able and willing to help.

ABYC Family Race #2, Saturday, August 13
I need Committee boat crew for this one.

ABYC Summer Bell Buoy, Sunday, August 14
I need Committee boat crew for this as well.

Canadian OPTI Championship, August 19 - 24
I have a good number of people signed up for this - thank you all - but still have to fill in some spots, particularly, mark boats. If you can't commit to the whole 6 days, I'll take whatever you can offer. I could use some help on the committee boats as well. We're running 2 courses, so I need twice as many people as usual. Waiting until the last minute does not help me with this one, so please let me know ASAP if you can help.

That's my wish list for this week.

Bluffers Challenge Race - Saturday, August 6

As seen in the ABYC Events book (see page 18), the Bluffers Challenge Race, the third TELDS race for 2016, is set for August 6.

The race will start off Bluffer's Park. The course will use fixed navigation marks and the race may be shortened based upon the wind conditions experienced that day. Participants are encouraged to arrive at Bluffers Park on the evening of Friday, August 5. Official registration is from 8:00 am to 9:30 am on the morning of Saturday, August 6 at CBYC. A mandatory Skipper's Meeting will follow at 9:45 am. The first gun will be at 11:00 am.

As with all TELDS events, the Bluffers Challenge Race will consist of single-handed, double-handed and full crewed boats racing in spinnaker and non-spinnaker divisions. Each boat must have a valid PHRF-LO certificate.

ABYC Youth Racers Travel to Cottage Country

This past weekend, ABYC's new double-handed sailing team competed at the Mid Ontario Championship Regatta hosted by Sturgeon Lake Sailing Club. This year, the regatta was the home of the Ontario Sailing Provincial Championships. Sailing RS Fevas, Katrina Bonin and Karina Kaye placed 1st overall, winning the 16 & Under Provincial Champs, and coming 2nd overall in the all ages ranking. Josephine Waite and Mika Kaye placed 5th, along with Calvin Groen and Josh Quertia who placed 6thoverall. It was sunny all weekend, with 10 knots of wind on Saturday and 6 knots on the Sunday, classic lake conditions where playing the shifts is critical. It was a great learning experience for the sailors, as most are new to racing. Their hard work and determination paid off. The RS Feva fleet is growing fast and ABYC is proud to be a part of the development of this new class.

On the Laser Radial course the regatta was similarly a new experience for our sailors, as it took place on a small cottage country lake; this led to wind and weather systems they have not yet seen much of this season on Lake Ontario. Saturday, with a thermal filling in through the late morning, the wind was funneled down the lake and oscillated irregularly across the course. Our sailors quickly rose to the challenge and, after a difficult first race, each finished at least one race in the top ten. On Sunday, the wind was significantly lighter and, although from the opposite direction, it continued to shift throughout races, making it difficult for the Race Committee to set a course and to start the fleet. Our radials continued to race consistently and played the shifts, excelling in the difficult conditions. All three of our racers placed at the top of the 40-boat fleet. Ian Doell finished in 3rd, Rowland Goddard in 7th, and Martin Staadecker in 11th.

We are incredibly pleased by these results and continue to train and prepare for Cork, the culminating event of our summer race season, which will take place in mid-August.

Here's to another great regatta, thanks SLSC.

Boats Needed for Canadian Optimist Championship - Responses Needed
We will be running two race courses for the Canadian Optimist Championship, August 19-25.

Sarah Ashbridge will be the Championship Fleet committee boat, Jack Cameron and Robert Humphrey will be mark boats (along with a boat coming from PCYC), and we need TWO more boats appropriate for the Green Fleet committee and the Championship Fleet finish boat.

A sailboat or powerboat with:
  • working windlass (25-55' of water, ideally 100' of rode)
  • working head
  • working engine
  • a bit of shade
  • an owner/operator available for the six days
would be ideal.

Lunch and plenty of thank-yous will be provided each day. You'd host four to five members of the race committee, and of course you'd get to help.

We can add a keep-away buoy at the transom to protect the boat from eager young sailors, and we'll provide tubes to attach to stanchions to hold flags.

As our Safety Chief mentioned, we are also looking for powerboats (ideally RIBs) for Safety and/or Judges. With most sailing schools still in session, these are at a premium this week.

If you have a boat (or a good lead on one!) that might be available, please don't hesitate to contact me: rearcom@abyc.on.ca
