Jackup Barge

Thank you to Drew Robertson for getting the answer a lot of people have been asking. The jackup barge is drilling geological test boreholes for the new Ashbridge's Bay treatment outfall. It will be on site for the next few months.

The sailing season has been one of the best in recent memory. It's great to see so many people out and enjoying our Club. I've received positive comments from Members about our F&B services and ongoing improvements through strong Club management.

Two points I need to address in this S2S are related to the ABYC Code of Conduct that was approved by the Membership in 2012. How each of us interprets and "lives" the Policy has a direct impact on making ABYC a great place. I'll apologize in advance for taking up so much space in the S2S, but it's an important reminder.

With the beautiful weather, more members and visitors are spending nights on-board. I'm receiving continued reports of sailors not properly securing halyards and lines leading to unnecessary noise. The issue and request for action has been stated previously in the S2S and AGM's. Please take note, tie off your halyards and remind your neighbors accordingly.

Secondly and unfortunately I had to convene a Discipline Committee as the result of complaints against a Senior Member. The Committee's decision was upheld by the Board following an appeal. According to our By-Laws 10.10 C (iii), the Board has agreed to publish the decision in the Members Only section of our website in the Board Communications section. Members are encouraged to read the decision and how it may or may not affect you.

ABYC Code of Conduct

This section was initiated by the Board of Directors and presented to the General Membership for approval. Accordingly, any amendments changing the intent of the policy must be ratified by the General Membership.

a) Principles: The club was formed in 1932 for the purpose of advancing the sport of yachting in all its forms. ABYC is a working club, which depends on the cooperation of all members for the maintenance of the club and its facilities and for ensuring an enjoyable communal environment for all members and their guests. To this end:

b) The Community has the right to:
1) Enjoy the facilities and programs of ABYC and the sport of sailing and boating in a welcoming environment;
2) Be treated with respect, dignity and consideration;
3) A civil and honest environment free from discrimination and harassment;
4) A place where all opinions are presented and considered with respect;
5) An environment where property is treated with care and maintained in a respectful way;
6) Be part of a community of sailors which abides by the rules, regulations and traditions of the sport; and
7) An environment where everyone feels safe both on and off the water.

c) The Community has the responsibility to:
1) Act in a civil, respectful and welcoming manner;
2) Behave ethically and honestly.
3) Maintain decorum;
4) Respect ABYC property and the property of others;
5) Observe the best practices and rules of sailing and boating;
6) Be mindful of their personal safety and the safety of others; and
7) To report when they observe, or are affected by, any violation of the Code of Conduct.

d) Scope: This code applies to all members, guests, their children and staff of ABYC:
While on ABYC club property; when participating in an ABYC sponsored or sanctioned event either on or off the water; when utilizing reciprocal privileges afforded to members at another club; or when representing ABYC. Members have the responsibility to inform their children and guests of appropriate behaviour and may be held accountable when children or guests violate these principles. Staff should report any violations of the Code of Conduct to the Club Manager, who shall report to the Senior Vice-Commodore. Members should report any violations of the Code of Conduct to the Senior Vice-Commodore.

   General Manager's Report

We have changed our patio furniture!  As the winds picked up, we lost most of our patio furniture, leaving us with the task of replacing it. I am happy to say we have new seating outside on our upper patio for all to enjoy.

I am also implementing chit use for the dining room area. There have been a number of issues with the wrong member number being charged so we will ask that you fill out a chit when ordering at the bar moving forward so we have a signed chit acknowledging your order. I thank everyone in advance for your help in facilitating this at the Club so we can ensure we bill people appropriately. In addition to this, we ask that you have your membership cards as well when ordering in the dining room.

As a heads up, we will be replacing some of our kitchen equipment in the coming weeks and this will limit our offerings over that time frame. I will post a limited menu while we make the changes. We will be grilling out on our patio to ensure there are no service disruptions during the change.

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far and I look forward to seeing you all around the Club.

From The Galley

It was said a long time ago by some regatta participants from another yacht club that AB'S was the best beer and burger club on the lake. I think we will get that tag again. Our new menu is now in effect and the burger selection is outstanding. Chef Adam makes all the patty's from scratch, no frozen ones are allowed in the kitchen. He will not tell me his secret blend but they are outstanding. My favourite is the Black and Blue that is a Cajun Blackened patty with Blue Cheese. I am working my way through the menu. Adam's motto is 'fresh not frozen' and that is very representative on this new menu. I thank you all for your patience as the new staff are settling in. I know we have had a few hick-up's in the past week, Karen and Adam are working very hard on systems and procedures to speed up service.

This past weekend we got new furniture on the upper patio, very sturdy aluminum tables and chairs and all matching umbrella's, so come on down and enjoy something from the new menu. Enjoy the view of the basin sitting in a chair that will not collapse from under you. The Fish Taco is a new light snack to be enjoyed with one of our craft beers.

The new look website was launched Monday evening. It's easier to navigate and has a much fresher look. The summer menu is under the dining section. Thank you Kate Driscoll, Nathan Fraser and the team for all of your work on this project.

You will notice that we have had an increase in catering in the past month. These events are helpful to us in two ways; it gives the club additional revenue as well as giving staff more hours of work, which helps keep our turnover low. This has helped us this year actually beat our budget, something food and beverage has not done in many years.

Now, after telling you all of the great things about our new menu, as Karen said in her report, in a week or so we will be offering a limited menu for 2 - 4 days. We have some work to get done on our kitchen. We have to replace two ranges and the deep fryer. We are told two days but, like on those TV renovation shows, we could run into some unforeseen issues that may take a day or two to deal with. We will notify the membership when this is to be done.

That's all I have for this week, see ya at the club!

Tuscarora Cruise Report

16 boats with 34 members set sail on Friday for Tuscarora. It was a picture perfect sail. The winds were at a close reach ranging from 12 to 20 knots, but hovering most of the time around 15 knots. The sun was shining; the water was flat. Kate kept us entertained with her radio voice and we listened in to hear who had the wind and who was depowering to keep their boat flat (likely so they could enjoy lunch). We made it to Tuscarora in no time! Not sure how many boats clocked their time for the race, Ron. Satori did and is waiting to see who beat her to win the coveted cruising race award - a handmade masterpiece by Conner.

Margaret and Simon motored over on Saturday, and Audrey and Dick trekked through three hours of traffic to join us by land. They brought us delicious fresh key lime and apple pies.

Friday night, some BBQ'd at the TYC and joined Rick and Doreen as they celebrated their 52nd anniversary! Others headed over to the Sunset Grill on the river for drinks and fish dinners.

Saturday, Kevin gave us instructions for Geo-cache. Roger reminded us how to enter the coordinates in our GPSs, then chivalrously taxied us to the marina to start our hunt, saving us a 45-minute walk just to get started. Amazingly, we found two caches and even received a pen as a gift from a local muggle. We quit early to have time to work on our 50s outfits and also so the ladies could shop at the marina.  (Hazel was able to pick up anniversary cards for her and Dan - 11 years).

With a total of 42 adults (no young'uns), we had lots of great appetizers, including smoked fish and lox that Anne and Brian smoked in their own backyard. Chefs Kevin and Dan BBQ'd some yummy tenderloins (ABYC did a great job of denuding the meat). Thanks, Nancy, for that tip! And Denise shared the vegetarian, marinated huge mushrooms with the carnivores. We danced up a storm with our 50's sock hop, then finished off with a fire in the pit. Chris averted crisis when he rescued Maggie, who had jumped into the fire pit, but at least the flames were small at that point. Dogs do love sticks. Sunday, the winds started off nicely, but petered off about halfway across the lake.

We hope that new members, Floyd and Anne on Relentless, enjoyed their first cruise and the fun.
Thanks to our Cruise Team: Denise Ouellette, Kevin Forward, Dan Gregory, and Hazel Wood. Hats off to Denise and Kevin for the success of their inaugural cruise hosting.

Special thanks to our Cruising Captains: Nancy Ogden, Chris Pappas, and Ron & Cindy Boudah

ABYC Family Race, July 16

Thanks to RO Brian Chapman for championing this event. Also his crew of volunteers: Amanda Evans, Lauren Stephens, and Max Smith for helping to make it happen. Sounds like conditions were great - would be nice to see a few more participants for the next one in August.

Thanks also, to Mike Flynn and Starwatch for coming through when we needed it and volunteering to serve as committee boat... much appreciated.

Steerers Regatta, July 14 & 15
Four Sisters Regatta , July 16 & 17

O...M...G....where do I start with this one? We had big wind on Thursday and Friday - 18/19 knots, gusting to whatever and some pretty nasty chop. There were little boats turtled all over the place and at times it seemed more like a search and rescue mission than a regatta. There were a few tears, a couple of bonked heads (but, thankfully, no serious injuries) and quite a few kids were just too scared and retired. We had one boy beside the committee boat, completely under water (he had lost his bailer) and was sitting waist deep before he managed to sort himself out. Fortunately, his floats kept him from sinking completely. They all came back the next day for another go at it, bless their little hearts, and we were there for them.

Saturday and Sunday were much calmer in comparison, with enough wind to get in races but without all the drama of Thursday and Friday. It was hard work and our RC crew did a great job:

Steerers

RO's: Bill Visser, Ian Gow
Committee Boat: Corinne Lusty, Marjolyn Vander Hart, Mary Jacobs,
Pin/Mark Boats: Dave Steenbergen, Tom Shenstone, Stan Gap, Tim Hill, Rick Hayward, and Eleanor McKay, who also did a day on the committee boat

Four Sisters

RO's: Bill Visser, Ian Gow
Committee Boat: Marjolyn Van der Hart, Susan Hogan, Nancy Wilson
Pin/Mark Boats: Tom Shenstone, Stan Gap, Ken McAlpine, Vlad Ignjatovic

Thank you all for your hard work and dedication. Well done.

OPTI Canadians Friday, August 19 - Wednesday, August 24

It seems like yesterday that this one was months away, but here it is, looming large. This is going to be a major event and I need lots of people. I could use a few more on the committee boats, and I'm in particular need of pin/mark boat crews.  As much as I would prefer to have people commit for the whole 6 days, I realize that is a lot to ask so, if you can help for part of it, get in touch with me ASAP. I have to know well in advance that I have enough people.  We will be running two courses, so I need twice as many as I'm usually looking for.

ABYC Race Teams

From July 14 - 17, all of ABYC's Race Teams were competing in two consecutive events held at PCYC.  On Thursday and Friday, PCYC hosted the Steerer's regatta, an interclub event specifically for sail training programs. Saturday and Sunday comprised the Four Sisters Event, whose title outlives the now missing landmark of four stacks beside PCYC.  Steerer's brought windy conditions, with wind ranging from 15-18 knots, while the weekend event was sailed in 5-10 knot breeze.  A total of 28 youth sailors represented ABYC in four different classes.

Optimists

Nathan Latka at left, 2nd place Overall, Optimist Champ Fleet, Four Sisters

For our youngest sailors in the Optimist Green fleet, Steerer's presented some very challenging conditions. Max Bonin, Callum Ruch, and Dillon Soin faced heavy wind and waves, and not many races were completed but, in the first race, Max and Dillon got 2nd and 6th respectively, a great showing in a 25 boat fleet. Four Sisters brought more favourable conditions. Callum completed his first race in 8th place, and ended the regatta in 12th overall.

The Opti Championship fleet sailed 6 races in very windy and wavy conditions at Steerer's. The team sailed very well in these tough conditions and had some excellent results. Nathan Latka placed 2nd in Blue fleet, Amy Glennie placed 4th in Blue fleet, and Paul Wortmann placed 5th in Blue fleet. Kate Evans also placed 9th in the Red fleet, just ahead of Wyatt Small. Aidan Massey Garrison and Keagan Valentine did well as newcomers to Championship fleet as well, handling the tough conditions.

At Four Sisters, the 39 boat Opti Championship fleet sailed 7 races in light and very shifty breezes. Despite these very dynamic conditions, the team still performed very well. Nathan Latka placed 2nd overall and 1st in Blue fleet, and Paul Staadecker placed 8th overall. Congratulations to Nathan, who at 12 years old is punching well above his weight in the overall standings, which includes racers up to 15 years of age.

420's and RS Fevas
Ian Doell at Right, 3rd Overall at Four Sisters

ABYC's new double-handed team attended their first regattas as a team this weekend. Eight sailors attended Steerer's and six of them continued to race through Saturday and Sunday at the Four Sisters Regatta. The wind conditions for Thursday and Friday were gusting up to 18 knots and coaches and sailors had their hands full. ABYC's team handled the wind beautifully, staying calm the entire day and enjoying how much they were learning with such gusty conditions. Giacomo Guadagni and Ethan Ristoff got straight bullets in ABYC's new RS Feva class despite the wind. Saturday and Sunday were much lighter conditions but the sailors continued their hard work.

For most sailors, this was their very first regatta and we were extremely proud of their hard work and determination throughout the four days. At Steerers, Giacomo Guadagni and Ethan Ristoff took 1st in the Fevas while Matthew Kustec and Karina Kaye got 5th in 420 white sail fleet. At Four Sisters, Giacomo and Matthew took 1st in the Feva class, and Josephine Waite and Mika Kaye got 2nd!  Ethan Ridtoff sailed with RCYC sailor Nick Spears and they finished mid fleet in the very competitive 420 spinnaker fleet.
Four sisters:  Centre, Giacomo Guadagni and Ethan Ristoff first in Feva
Class, at left,  Mike Kaye and Josephine Waite, 2nd in Feva Class

Laser Radials
Steerer's Junior Regatta spanned the first two days and brought strong winds and challenging conditions. Our sailors rose to the occasion; though many sailors from other teams retired from the racing each day, our team stayed on the water as the 60 boat fleet dwindled. Michael Magi in particular had an incredible performance, finishing 1st overall! Notable performances during this regatta include Isaac Avila, the newest member to our team, who had only been in the boat for three days prior to Steerer's, and both Poet Bernard and Bridget Latka, who were very consistent in their results, placed in the top half of the fleet. For the Four Sister's Regatta, the wind was significantly lighter. However, the conditions were still incredibly difficult because of constant shifts and inconsistent pressure across the course. Rowland Goddard, Hunter Dejean, and Martin Staadecker all performed incredibly well, finishing within the top 15 boats in the 60 boat fleet. ABYC graduate and Ontario Sailing Team member Clara Gravely posted a 6th place finish, one place behind ABYC alumni Quentin Beelik of the Ontario Sailing Development Team, who was also representing ABYC. Ian Doell dropped a 6th place to finish 3rd, putting ABYC two for two getting on the podium. These strong finishes gave ABYC 50% of the top 10 slots in a 60 boat fleet, a very impressive result. The Radials head next to Sturgeon Lake for some camping and small lake racing, and then on to CORK.

As usual, Port Credit ran an excellent regatta that was a ton of fun and a huge learning experience for all who attended. Congratulations to all the racers, and a huge thank you to the parents who helped make this happen by trekking their sailors across the city every day. We are already looking forward to our next event, which will be CORK for most of the team.
