Mast Up Storage - Please Do The Survey
As per last week's Ship2Shore, you were asked to complete a survey to revisit the potential of lifting boats with mast up, with the cranes.

Please respond to the survey by Monday, July 25. One response per boat. Those with power boats, dry-sail boats or dinghies should not respond. Please respond even if you store your sailboat off-site.

The link to the survey is: Mast Up Survey

Thanks in advance for your participation.

ABYC Board Elections - Fall 2016
Nomination Committee:  Focus on the Board-
Vice Commodore, Financial Services

It is that time of year for us all, the hustle and bustle of Summer!  It is better than Christmas for those enjoying all that ABYC has to offer its membership.

Let's be clear...our club membership, harbour, racing and cruising activities don't just happen.  We have a dedicated group of volunteers lead by a very committed board member. As a club, we decided to limit our Board terms. That means as a club we are constantly looking for our next leaders... could that be YOU! Think about it, we're looking into adding some perks to the job but, for right now, you'll get your club's heartfelt thanks.

Past...and Present Vice Commodores - Financial Services (to name a few): Kevin Forward, Axel Noriega, Giles Osborne, Brian Neysmith, Thanos Kaponeridis, and Ron Clark

Worth noting....from our by-laws
4.02 Qualification - Each director shall be:
(a) eighteen (18) or more years of age, and
(b) a Senior member or Life member of the Club.
No member shall be elected as Commodore or Senior Vice-Commodore or Rear Commodore unless such member has at least a third (1/3) interest in a boat enrolled in the Club Fleet.

If that sounds like you... read on!

Vice Commodore, Financial Services
a)     Oversee all financial transactions, as approved by the Board;
b)     Oversee the proper accounting records of all monies received and paid;
c)     Report at each regular meeting, or when requested by the Commodore, on the financial status of the Club and present monthly statements;
d)     Present to membership, the annual audited statements and table a motion for the selection of the Auditor for the following fiscal period at a General Meeting;
e)     Furnish such security as required;
f)      Furnish statements to the Club Internal Auditor;
g)     Establish and appoint a Finance Committee;
h)     Submit all financial returns to Governments as required by law;
i)      Establish accounting systems and methods and oversee the revision and maintenance of such computerized systems, including the audit of their integrity;
j)      Establish and manage the process for the annual operating budget preparation and fee setting, including the provision for capital expenditure;
k)     Administer the policies with regard to delinquent accounts and those members requesting special terms for settling their accounts;
l)      Recommend policies and measures for the collection of aged accounts;
m)   Conduct quarterly analysis of Actual and planned revenues and expenditures and make appropriate adjustments.

Q & A: Up close and personal with those who have held the position of Vice Commodore - Financial Services in the past.

What are the challenges of this role?
The largest challenge that this role has is its scope. It is about paying attention to details so that little problems do not become big problems. Its also about the big picture, as every aspect of operations from member services to sailing programs to investment in infrastructure are in the end supported by members' fees and the VC Finance plays big role in conjunction with the rest of the board to ensure that members' fees are spent responsibly and in line with members' priorities and wishes. As a volunteer with other commitments and interests, it is about prioritizing and making sure that we have the controls and mechanisms to abide to our governance duties.

It is challenging to review and comment on the operating results and follow up with appropriate board members on major deviations or planned changes during the year.

What are the rewards of this role?
The largest reward, at least for me, is the feeling of contribution and belonging to a group of outstanding individuals (board and members).  Each small job has its own sense of accomplishment. I do thank the Finance Committee for their support and for having a full ear to bounce off different ideas. I also thank them for their support in ensuring that our projects get done. Coming together has been one of my biggest rewards.

If you are prepared to give the time and want to participate there is satisfaction in making a difference.

Would you recommend taking the Vice Commodore, Financial Services position at ABYC?
Yes. I believe this role requires both qualitative and quantitative skills. Quantitative skills are those hard skills to ensure that the technical part of the job is taken care of: to understand the financial needs of the club and the membership (two different aspects). The qualitative component (soft skills) is to be able to influence decisions and ideas, and at the same time to ensure that you build a team (Finance Committee) that will support you.

This position can result in a lot of personal satisfaction from knowing that you have participated in and contributed to the financial planning and operation of a very good club.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to run for this position?
My biggest advice is to build bridges with your peers and colleagues in the club. I do not think that only one person can do the job. Having the ability to think outside of the box in this role goes a long way. You should have a basic understanding of accounting principles for Not for Profit Corporations and the ability to organize and summarize the preparation and compilation of the annual budget.

Next Focus on the board will outline the position of Vice Commodore, Marine Services

   General Manager's Report

Last week Mike MacDonald announced the hire of our new Executive Chef, Adam Fowler. We are fortunate to have such a talented chef at the Club.  He has worked across North America. Some of these Restaurants are the likes of Le St. Urbain in Montreal, Globe Bistro on the Danforth, WD50 in Manhattan, New York, and, most recently, Drift Bar and Kitchen in Bloor West Village.

We are excited to see what he will add to your dining experiences at the Club as we launch the first of many new menus for all to enjoy. The new menu has lots of your old favourites, and some new innovative dishes. All have been created from scratch by our kitchen team under the management of Adam. Be sure to book a reservation and join us at the Club this summer.

We are also growing our Front of House team and with that comes some growing pains. With the departure of Katie, I have tasked both Vanessa and Sara to run the front of house operations. They both have a keen attention to detail and I am confident that they will do a great job facilitating service for the remainder of the season.

Mimico Cruise Report

Last weekend 25 intrepid boats made their way to the Mimico Cruising Club for our annual club cruise. Things looked benign when we headed out on First Pilot at 10:30 or so but, by the time we entered Humber Bay, northerly gusts were whipping across the water, and boats coming in after us reported momentary winds in the high 20's. An interesting sail was had by most.

Mimico was welcoming as always. Preparations were underway for a wedding adjacent to the ABYC party area, and somber music filled the air while we prepared for the margarita contest, which was an interesting juxtaposition.

As the margarita sampling got underway, the rain moved in, and the wedding party moved indoors, while the sailors piled into the picnic shelters provided - nothing like being trapped in a tent with 40 of your best friends and 4 or 5 gallons of margaritas.

The downpour ultimately relented, and the focus moved from alcohol to food, consisting of excellent chicken and beef tacos provided by the ABYC restaurant team, led by new chef Adam Fowler (great work!). Dinner was followed by piņata whacking kicked off by Connor (Akula) on the kids' piņata and Sigi (Sun Streaker) for us older folks. Then it was back to general socializing and margarita drinking. Heading into dinner, it looked like the margaritas had the upper hand on the group but, by the end of the evening, all had been taken care of.

The margarita contest saw a tie, as tabulated by Olivia (Happy Spot). The winners were new member Leah Russell (Ruby Two Toes) and Sue and Paul Lefneski (Chillin'). The recipes are included here:

College Student Margarita (Leah)
1 large can of frozen minute maid limeade
Dump the limeade in a pitcher
Fill the empty can with tequila and add to pitcher
Add 1 can of sprite
Add 1 bottle of Corona
Stir :)

Raspberry Margarita (Sue and Paul)
A pint of raspberries
Juice of two limes
Two chopped mint sprigs
Raspberry juice and tequila to fill a pitcher.

Try the winning margaritas available at the ABYC bar.

The sail home on Sunday made up for big winds on the nose on the the way out as the breeze settled in for a quick reach after some initial indecision.

Thanks to co-hosts Alex and Jim Brill (Drifters) & Maxine Lewis and Giles Osborne (First Pilot).

**URGENT**  Steerers Regatta (PCYC), Thursday, July 14 & Friday, July 15

I'm still looking for a mark layer/driver for Friday. Repeated S2S requests have come up empty and the stress-o-meter is definitely back on the move. I realize it's a weekday - a problem for a lot of people - but there must be someone out there who could be available to help the kids on the Opti course. PLEASE let me know asap if you're that person.

Four Sisters Regatta (PCYC) - Saturday, July 16 & Sunday, July 17

I'm in much better shape for this one but could still use another body on the committee boat.

ABYC Family Race - Saturday, July 16

I need committee boat people.

That's it for this week. Don't let me down, folks.

LORC Race Report
If you're not first...

Well, you missed a fantastic weekend of racing. NYC, RCYC, PCYC, OYS (with a fleet of J27s) showed lots of competitive spirit.

ABYC was lightly represented by one MORC boat, three J24s at one of their Canadian championship qualifying events, and Nautical Symphony. Congratulations to Bart and crew who placed third in the J80 fleet.

Saturday was consistent wind with gusts over 20 requiring skillful boat handling, especially downwind! There are some great pictures thanks to John Crawley on the LORC website. Sunday was patchy, variable, unpredictable, more drama and confrontation as multiple boats converged on the marks.

ABYC's Starwatch and crew battling eventual IRC Canadians overall champion Zoo2 (NYC).

Full results for the regatta and season so far are also posted on the LORC site.

Next regatta is LYRA at Whitby Y.C., the last week of July. Next IRC regatta is NYC August 13. One day only so it should be easier to get crew together and it's not that far away.

Let's get a few of our hotshot PHRF and former IRC competitors out and represent the east.

Family Race July 16
Both ABYC Family Races for 2016 Run as Pursuit Style Races

Sailing Instructions for ABYC Family Race #1, Saturday July 16, 2016 are as follows:

1  Pursuit Racing Concept
1.1 There are 3 main objectives in running a Pursuit Race; these are as follows, FUN, FUN and more FUN. While Pursuit Racing has been going on for decades, worldwide ... it's newish to ABYC and a few words about the concept are most appropriate.  There is a beautiful simplicity to pursuit racing.  Set the tortoises off first, then release the hares ... in a perfect world, all should cross the finish line together. The start time of each boat is staggered, with slower rated starting faster rated boats.  Essentially your boats PHRF handicap allowance for the specific distance of this race offsets your starting time to PHRF tables associated with Time on Distance. The first boat across the finish line wins!  With traditional handicap races, you wait, for the corrected time calculations. With Pursuit Racing you pass a boat you beat that boat. The order in which you cross the finishing line is you're recorded finishing order. It's that simple!!!! There isn't nearly the chaos at the start; and everyone makes it back to the dock at approximately the same time.

2  Schedule
2.1 Due to the time needed to calculate the staggered start time sequence for each boat, pre-registration will be required 48 hours before the warning signal.  All those interested, please complete the form below and forward to the Race Officer Brian Chapman (at brian@uksailmakers.com).
2.2 Mandatory competitors meeting will be held upstairs in the club house at 1200, day of. The warning signal will be made at 1300.

3  Start, Finish Line, and Course for Family Race #1
3.1 The start and finish line will be between a drop mark located approximately .4nm at a bearing of 205' mag of the ABYC harbour entrance and the orange flag on the committee boat. From there the course will round the eastern most extension of the land spit, left to starboard, proceeding to the Eastern Gap entrance buoy T2 left to port, returning to the start / finish line, leaving the headline to port on the return.

4  Total Distance
6.14 NM

5  Handicapping
All participants will sail under PHRF NFS (no flying sails, can be used). Should you not hold a PHRF rating, one will be assigned (for the purposes of this race, only).

6  Time Limit
The time limit is 1600.

7  Starting Procedure ... Sequence and VHF use
7.1 Unless postponed,  warning signal will be at 1300.
7.2 Staggered start scratch sheets will be issued at the competitors meeting. The RC will use and communicate the starting sequence on channel 71

8  Prizes
Prizes will be awarded to the first three finishes (courtesy of UK Sailmakers Toronto) upstairs in the clubhouse shortly after the race.

9  Purpose, Fun, Fun and more Fun
Hope you and your families will join us!

10  The happenstance the fleet of ABYC Race Committee boats are on call with an out of town regatta.  As such, my own UK Coach Boat is in sickbay and not usable. I'm in need of one boat to be used for the Race Committee (+/- 5hrs). Should anyone be in a position to offer your boat (you drive) for purposes of the race committee, I would greatly appreciate your support.  Please make no hesitation in contacting myself (email address above).

Kindest regards,
Brian

Sarah Douglas 3rd at US Nationals

National Sailing Team member Sarah Douglas represented ABYC at the US Laser Radial National Championships on the weekend at Mentor Harbor Yachting Club in Cleveland. Sarah finished an outstanding 3rd of 101 boats, and was the top Canadian competitor at the event. There were 11 races sailed in a variety of conditions, and, after two drops, Sarah's scoreline totaled 35 points, and all of the nine races used in her score were 7th place or better.  Results like these and the recent performance of Canadian women at the World's in Mexico show that the Canadian Laser Radial Program is very competitive on the international stage. Sarah will be guest coaching the ABYC Team at PCYC this weekend, and later this summer. Congratulations to Sarah on her continued success!

ABYC Racing and Officiating at the 2016 Optimist North Americans

As the lead photo of the newsletter, Oliver van Rossem is representing ABYC's Optimist Team in Antigua this week, sailing in their usual windy and wavy conditions at the Optimist North American Championships. Oliver is one of nine Canadians who qualified for the event, where 144 sailors from 21 countries will compete until July 18 in rotating fleets. At time of writing, racing had not started; the Canadian team was intensely practicing to prepare for the event. Rear Commodore Paul Brennan is also at the event, working on the water as part of the Race Committee. ABYC will host a similar sized event August 18-24 as we host the 2016 Optimist Canadian Championships.

ABYC Opti Racers Survive Carnage in Hamilton Harbor, Win Prizes

This past weekend the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club hosted the first Opti regatta of the summer season, Fogh Boorman. On Saturday the wind was blowing with gusts over 20 knots, which presented a challenge for even some of our more experienced sailors. The championship course completed a single race and abandoned a second race, while the green course got in none. Sunday brought lighter winds that would shift 180 degrees, but our sailors adapted to the conditions and accomplished a series of very good results.

In the optimist red fleet, Paul Staadecker came 5th, Kate Evans came 4th, and Annie Gravely came 3rd. In the blue fleet, Davis Dejean came 5th. In the green fleet, Keagan Valentine came 3rd. Nathan Latka won the blue fleet and was 2nd overall.  Placing 2nd overall is a very impressive result as blue fleet sailors are the middle age group, 11/12 years old, with red fleet sailors aged up to 15.

We are very proud of all our sailors, and we look forward to getting back on the racecourse this coming Thursday through Sunday at PCYC.

ABYC Team at Sarnia Sailfest
Austin Stein and Julia Manarin, Race Coaches

This past weekend seven of our Laser Radial sailors on the Senior Race Team travelled to Sarnia to compete at the annual Sailfest regatta. They arrived Thursday night to participate in the training session run by Ontario Sailing the following day, and though winds were scarce on Friday, a fierce storm came in that evening which left substantial breeze and towering swells for Saturday's racing. Nevertheless the team handled the conditions well, and finished with some very respectable results. Sunday's lighter winds proved equally challenging however, as the current and prevailing wind shifts came into play. Again, the team excelled and demonstrated their competence in all wind conditions.

Off the start line on Saturday: 209714 Martin Staadecker, 196034 Rowland Goddard, 201205 Ian Doell

We are tremendously proud of their performance this weekend, and with five of the seven Radial sailors new to the boat this year, they show great potential as well. With 40 boats racing in total, Hunter Dejean placed 8th, Rowland Goddard 9th, Michael Magi 12th, Martin Staadecker 13th, Ian Doell 14th, Bridget Latka 17th, and Poet Bernard 32nd.  ABYC Alumni Quentin Beelik had an outstanding regatta, finishing 2nd by a point.

Swimming off the pier by the Blue Water Bridge

A warm thanks to Sarnia Yacht Club for hosting another well-run regatta. The Radial team will be training back at ABYC this week before heading to Port Credit for their next event.
