Submissions Welcome

We received a number of photos on the Tall Ships Challenge Race, as you can see from the lead photo above. We also wanted to include a photo by Joyce Guest that was taken from the Sarah Ashbridge, as this is exactly the kind of contributions that Ship2Shore thrives on!

Thanks to Joyce Guest and Ralph Weckesser for great photos this week (and also to David Studholme for his photos of last weekend's cruise)!

MCC Reciprocal Cruise - Slips Needed
Important Notice

This coming weekend, July 9-10, we have a large number of boats coming in from Mimico Cruising Club's reciprocal cruise. It is their Commodore's Cruise and they have 19 more boats coming in than we have going out. We need everyone's help by remembering to file a sail plan if you are going away on weekends.

This coming weekend would be a good one to sail to your favourite spot to help us out.

The Harbour Master
Will Your Slip be Vacant on Saturday, July 9?

We are reaching out to members for their assistance. As Joe Simpson has pointed out, we have a reciprocal cruise this weekend with MCC and we need to identity member slips that could be available for Saturday, July 9. We would like to accommodate as many boats as possible but cannot wait until Saturday morning (after skippers have filed sail plans) to make this decision so we are trying to find out in advance what member slips might be vacant Saturday night.

I know that some of you may be heading east soon, some may be heading to the PCYC LORC, and others may have plans for this weekend. If/when you know that your slip will be available (for Saturday night), please email cruising@abyc.on.ca. Please note that this advice does not replace your responsibility to file a sail plan.

Alternatively, if you do not already have plans for this weekend, why not join hosts Maxine, Giles, Alex & Jim for their Mexican Fiesta at MCC? Registration will remain open for the remainder of today (Wednesday, July 6).

Many of you have already received an email about this. Many thanks to those that have responded.

Your assistance in this matter will be very much appreciated.

From The Galley

Well, the last six weeks have definitely been interesting ones for our food service. After Chef Jan's departure, we have had a complete turn over in the kitchen staff with the exception of one person. In the interim, we contracted a catering company to fill the void. This company sent us a very talented chef by the name of Adam. In the short time, he has been 'working' for us, as he has gotten us through a regatta and several functions. Adam see's a great potential in our food service and to that end has applied for the position of Chef for ABYC. I am pleased to announce that Adam Fowler will be joining us on a full time basis.

The kitchen is not the only area that has seen some changes. In the same time period our two lead front of house staff have left to pursue other interests. Thank you Victoria and Katie for your time with us. We all wish you the best in your future endeavors. Of course this leads to a few new faces behind the bar and in the dining room. As new staff come on board, I ask for a bit of patience as they get used to our operations. With mostly a new staff, we will be working in a different direction. Busy nights like race nights and functions have one big issue; bottle necks at the bar for ordering and paying of bills. We will be working toward more table service and a service station in the dining room area to keep staff on the floor and not congregating behind the bar. Again, please be patient as we work toward this goal.

Also in the past six weeks, we have seen an increase in the number of functions (member and non-member) in the clubhouse. The revenue from these functions are a great help to our bottom line. I know that during these functions there have been disruptions in the service to the members and I apologize for this. Duffy's is always open when a private function is going on and a staff member will always be assigned to look after members' needs. Or if it's a nice day, it might be the patio!

A new food menu will start rolling out later this week and will be fully implemented next week. I have seen it and I think you will like it.

Our new look and feel website is almost ready and should be up and running in a couple of weeks. Many thanks to Kate Driscoll and new members Erika and Nate Fraser for all of your hard work in making this happen.

That's all I have for this week, see ya at the club!

   General Manager's Report

Happy July Everyone!

I wanted to thank everyone for joining us over the July long weekend. We had record numbers in attendance. I hope everyone enjoyed the surprise of an Oyster Bar on the patio on Friday night. Adam, our new Executive Chef, will be adding more creative dining ideas this summer for all to enjoy.

Mast Up Storage Survey
We have been asked (as past Mast Up Task Team) to revisit the potential of lifting boats with mast up, with the cranes. As well, the Travel Lift Committee is interested in club members' opinions on mast up storage. As you may recall, there was a trial program in 2013, which was suspended while repairs were being done to the seawall. We are interested in re-visiting this matter.

Please respond to the survey by Monday, July 25. One response per boat. Those with power boats, dry-sail boats or dinghies should not respond. Please respond even if you store your sailboat off-site.

The link to the survey is: Mast Up Survey

Thanks in advance for your participation.

Get Out On The Water - 2nd Report
Well, the GET OUT ON THE WATER event has come and gone. We ended up having a great day, and will definitely employ some 'lessons learned' next year to take even more advantage of the promise this
event offers. 54 people signed up to join us for this free event however, in the end, only 23 came through the door (people like to sign up for free things!).

All attendees were greeted by Rob Faulkner and our very gracious volunteers who signed them in. Rob provided a tour of the ABYC grounds and gave our guests an orientation on what the Club has to offer. After the tour, they were divided up and taken out for a sail, many of them experiencing this for the first time. Later in the afternoon, we got together for a BBQ. Members answered questions and we all got to know each other a little more - at least a few of them expressed an interest in joining ABYC so that's definitely a win!
All in all it was a great day, and a fun time was had by all. We'd like to thank Jeff Dejean and the sailing school for all the work they did. A big thank you goes out to the people who volunteered their time and their boats. Thank you as well to those of you who didn't get to take a group out due to the lower than expected turnout but the fact that you made yourselves available was very much appreciated.

We're looking forward to next year, hopefully including our new members who joined after experiencing GET OUT ON THE WATER 2016!

Cruises
August Cruise Registration Has Opened!

Oakville Club - August 5, 6, 7
Hosts: Cruising Captains

It Is All About Jazz!
This mini cruise, hosted by the Cruising Captains, was planned to take in the Oakville Jazz Festival. This is a mandatory three-day / two-night cruise. Boats must arrive before 5 PM on the 5th (OC Harbourmaster rules). Only a limited amount of boats can be accommodated at the Oakville Club. More boats can be accommodated if the member is willing to be docked on the west side of the river. If you have a dinghy and are willing to take a dock on the other side of the river, please include this information in your registration.

There will not be a formal reception with dinner. A pot luck social gathering is planned for Friday, allowing time for participants to take in the jazz on the street. A group dinner at a local restaurant can be planned on Saturday.

Anchors Away in Humber Bay - August 27, 28
Hosts: Cruising Captains

This little known spot is a great, well protected harbour/anchorage to have a little getaway in the GTA.  This location is a great opportunity for members to practise their anchoring skills as the depth is only 15 feet with a soft mucky bottom, making for great holding.

Depending on the level of interest, some member boats will raft off each other. For 'first timers', members will be available to assist with anchoring or rafting. Just around the corner (a short dinghy ride) is a beach. Members with dinghies will provide lifts to the beach for members without dinghies. This cruise is facilitated by the Cruising Captains. A shore party will be held on the beach (weather permitting). Members are responsible for their own provisioning.

July Cruises

Mimico CC - July 9, 10
It is not too late to register for the Mexican Fiesta! Registration will remain open until midnight Wednesday, July 6.

Tuscarora YC - July 15, 16, 17
Registration remains open for wait list.

Highland Yacht Club - July 23, 24
Hosts: John and Sophie Scherlowski (Johnny's Cabana)

Calling all cool cat cruisers! We are bringing the spirit of the Jazz Festival to Highland Yacht Club (HYC)! Join us for a night of amazing jazz, cocktails/appetizers, and dinner at Highland Yacht Club (HYC). HYC is known as one of the friendliest clubs on the lake and is a short sail away from ABYC. This is a perfect cruise for both new and not-so-new sailors. We will enjoy the collective appetizers and your BYOB with some cool jazz before dinner. What is jazz? It is "propulsive syncopated rhythms, polyphonic ensemble playing varying degrees of improvisation and often deliberate distortions of pitch and timbre". That is the dictionary definition. We just know that, whatever it is, we like it a lot! Don't miss out!

Dinner will be at approximately 6ish and will be something yummy... trust us... we are the ones who bring you dates stuffed with blue cheese at every cruise (except for NOLSC... yes, lesson learned... we won't EVER attend a cruise without those tasty treats again). Here is a clue for dinner... you will be stuffed - Vegetarian and meat lovers alike. Children's menu will follow shortly. Sign up if you haven't already! We are looking forward to seeing you all there!

Port Credit YC - July 30, 31, August 1
Registration has been closed.

Canada Day NOLSC Cruise Report
The club cruise to Niagara on the Lake is always a popular destination for many reasons. It's the long weekend!! Yay!! And members have a two-night stay in one of the prettiest towns in Ontario. NOLSC is within walking distance to many attractions, shopping, and restaurants in the Old Town.

The expression, "all hands on deck", truly did apply to this cruise since a lot of work went into organizing this trip. The cruising captains did their very best to get as many slips as possible for the ABYC cruisers and there were three pairs of co-hosts to plan the weekend. In total, 25 boats arrived and 80 people, made up of club members, friends and family, participated. That's a lot of people!!!

A very special thanks goes to the co-hosts Paul & Sue (Chillin), Wolf & Noreen (Quantum Leap) for preparing the fabulous gourmet meal; to the cruising captains Chris, Nancy, Ron, and Cindy for managing the boat list; and to David & Lyn (Minerve) and Ron & Cindy (Akula) for coordinating two separate bike routes throughout the wine region.

So much can be said about this memorable weekend but here are some highlights:

Friday - Canada Day!!

Eager to avoid the stormy weather, cruisers set out early to sail ahead of the forecasted thunderstorms. Luckily, everyone made it safely. People then had the whole day to explore the Canada Day festivities at Simcoe Park, Artistry by the Lake, and the Queen Street shopping - not to mention the ice cream parlours!

Dressed in the festive red and whites - capes, flags, maple leaf tattoos and all, the evening started with the usual gathering for appetizers followed by the Canada-themed dinner of maple-glazed pork tenderloin and maple-glazed salmon with chicken fingers for the kids! Lots of salads, rice, and potatoes rounded out the meal. Liz Heron's world famous brownies, pies, cake, and local fruit were served for dessert.

Saturday - Winery Bike Tour

There were 57-59 people for the bike tour - a record number!! Therefore, the group split into two, with a kid-friendly route led by Ron & Cindy and the adult route led by David & Lyn. It was approximately 30kms according to Axel's GPS!!  Perhaps this was the reason why some adults opted for the kid's route. We stopped at a variety of wineries, a brewery, and an ice wine house that served ice wine slushies. The two groups crossed paths at the market café at Inniskilin where we had an alfresco lunch on the patio.

Sunday - A Race Home

The weather finally cooperated for the trip back to ABYC and close to a dozen boats enjoyed a great race back and beautiful day on the water. It was a great sail but a lull in the middle of the lake had some boats put on engines or several boats that couldn't resist the urge to fly their spinnakers home. This brought the field to three. With corrected times, this left Double Dutch as the winner by just over 20 minutes ahead of Chillin and Myrmidon. Congrats Fred and Jen. Bragging rights are now yours - come by Akula to get your victory prize.

**URGENT**  Steerers Regatta (PCYC), Thursday, July 14 & Friday, July 15

I'm still looking for a mark layer/driver for Friday. Repeated S2S requests have come up empty and the stress-o-meter is definitely back on the move. I realize it's a weekday - a problem for a lot of people - but there must be someone out there who could be available to help the kids on the Opti course. PLEASE let me know asap if you're that person.

Four Sisters Regatta (PCYC) - Saturday, July 16 & Sunday, July 17

I'm in much better shape for this one but could still use another body on the committee boat.

ABYC Family Race - Saturday, July 16

I need committee boat people.

That's it for this week. Don't let me down, folks.

Singer Long Distance Race - Friday, July 8

As seen in the ABYC Events book (see page 18), the Singer Long Distance Race, the second TELDS race for 2016, is set for July 8. This race is hosted by the Frenchman's Bay Yacht Club.

The race will consist of single-handed, double-handed, and full crewed boats racing in spinnaker and non-spinnaker divisions. As with all TELDS races, each boat must have a valid PHRF-LO certificate. The race will start off the Frenchman's Bay Yacht Club and will sail across the lake to the Niagara Mark, back across the lake to the end of the Leslie Street Spit, and then east to finish at FBYC (a distance of approximately 70 miles). Race registration at FBYC is scheduled for Friday afternoon (July 8) from 15:00 to 18:30). The Skipper's Meeting will be at 19:00 and the first gun is scheduled for 19:40.

FBYC will be hosting their regular Friday evening dinner at a cost of $10 each prior to the race. Make a reservation through the FBYC contact below. Also, the channel from Lake Ontario as well as the channel to FBYC can accommodate drafts up to 7 feet. Competitors drawing more than 7 feet should proceed with caution.

First Ever Youth Keelboat Program

Monday, July 4, was the start of ABYC's first ever youth keelboat course. David Bhardwaj, Jake Breckies, Dan Cameron, Madi Cameron, Jack Demeter, and Jessica Demeter set off with National 1D (our partner for this course) instructor Kurt Wege aboard a 7.5M Flying Tiger for a week-long program, which could culminate with a basic cruising standard certification for qualified students.

Boats Needed for Canadian Optimist Championship - Responses Needed
We will be running two race courses for the Canadian Optimist Championship, August 19-25.

Sarah Ashbridge will be the Championship Fleet committee boat, Jack Cameron and Robert Humphrey will be mark boats (along with a boat coming from PCYC), and we need TWO more boats appropriate for the Green Fleet committee and the Championship Fleet finish boat.

A sailboat or powerboat with:
  • working windlass (25-55' of water, ideally 100' of rode)
  • working head
  • working engine
  • a bit of shade
  • an owner/operator available for the six days
would be ideal.

Lunch and plenty of thank-yous will be provided each day. You'd host four to five members of the race committee, and of course you'd get to help.

We can add a keep-away buoy at the transom to protect the boat from eager young sailors, and we'll provide tubes to attach to stanchions to hold flags.

As our Safety Chief mentioned, we are also looking for powerboats (ideally RIBs) for Safety and/or Judges. With most sailing schools still in session, these are at a premium this week.

If you have a boat (or a good lead on one!) that might be available, please don't hesitate to contact me: rearcom@abyc.on.ca
