The Most Remote Yacht Club in the World

While ABYC enjoys the long days of summer, and the sailing program is in full swing, I visited the most remote club in the world in Fremantle, West Australia and went sailing in the Indian Ocean.

It is winter there and the winds were 20 knots.

I got the burgee as well.

Canada Day Celebrations

The Club has been buzzing and we are at full throttle as the summer kicks off.  We have been exceptionally busy over the last week and are now modifying our staffing levels to meet member expectations. I am also excited to say that we will be launching our new menu in a week and there will be some new and tantalizing additions for everyone to tempt their taste buds.

Be sure to join us at the Club for Canada Day and enjoy an afternoon BBQ on the Patio and our Table D'hôte menu in the evening while you enjoy a great day at the Club. These activities will replace Fine Dining on July 1st this week. Please see the Canada Day menu below.

Get Out On The Water - Report
Excerpt from Ronald Miller and Donna Miller GOOTW Blog

...An absolutely gorgeous day for opening up our club to the boating enthusiast. We saw a steady stream of participants eager to get out on the water and had all sorts of members ready and waiting to take a group or two for an afternoon sail...

Big People in Little boats ... Postponed!
We are going to reschedule the Board race in Optimist Dinghies, originally scheduled for this Friday. A new date will be announced closer to August. We are sorry for the last minute notice so, in lieu of this entertainment, we've arranged for fireworks in Ashbridge's Bay Park Friday evening, weather permitting.

In case any of you were speculating as to the reasons, it is NOT because a board member was worried about getting hit with the boom and couldn't find a helmet big enough.

Nor is it because a board member, just thinking about folding himself in three to fit in the boat, got such a leg cramp that he was taken to hospital looking like a pretzel, and three orthopedic surgeons are still trying to straighten him out.

Nor is it because a board member needed more time to sort out the trolling motor that he had attached to a daggerboard, but would only run in reverse.

And it is definitely not because a certain flag officer needed more time to be coached by his grandson.

Friday is Canada day, and we should all enjoy a rare day off in our short Canadian summer - and spend it with family and friends. That goes for your board, and double for the Sailing School staff who would have had to help us rig the boats, coach, and rescue us!

Happy Canada Day, everyone!

Rear Commodore, ABYC
Boats Needed for Canadian Optimist Championship - Responses Needed
We will be running two race courses for the Canadian Optimist Championship, August 19-25.

Sarah Ashbridge will be the Championship Fleet committee boat, Jack Cameron and Robert Humphrey will be mark boats (along with a boat coming from PCYC), and we need TWO more boats appropriate for the Green Fleet committee and the Championship Fleet finish boat.

A sailboat or powerboat with:
  • working windlass (25-55' of water, ideally 100' of rode)
  • working head
  • working engine
  • a bit of shade
  • an owner/operator available for the six days
would be ideal.

Lunch and plenty of thank-yous will be provided each day. You'd host four to five members of the race committee, and of course you'd get to help.

We can add a keep-away buoy at the transom to protect the boat from eager young sailors, and we'll provide tubes to attach to stanchions to hold flags.

As our Safety Chief mentioned, we are also looking for powerboats (ideally RIBs) for Safety and/or Judges. With most sailing schools still in session, these are at a premium this week.

If you have a boat (or a good lead on one!) that might be available, please don't hesitate to contact me: rearcom@abyc.on.ca

Family Database
As you know, I have compiled a database of the families with children. I had 29 families respond.
One of the ideas is that families can interact with each other over the summer and the list shows names and ages of the kids as well as the parents' information.

I would now like to distribute the list so you can network but I need your permission due to privacy concerns, etc.

If you DON'T want your information shared with the group, please let me know and I will remove it from the list.

I will wait until Thursday and will then send out the list as a PDF attachment.

Have a great week and hope to see many of you at the Niagara on the Lake cruise this weekend!

ABYC Board Elections - Fall 2016
Nomination Committee:  Focus on the Board -  Rear Commodore

ABYC's first regatta, Sailpast weekend festivities, and the first club cruises have all taken place, and now it is time to focus on the future leadership at the ABYC Board level. Throughout the summer, your Nomination Committee will again outline the role of each board position standing for election this year, starting with the Rear Commodore. We encourage you to reach out to those who held these positions in the past for their personal thoughts and experiences.

Past...and Present Rear Commodores (to name a few):  Paul Brennan, Pat Flynn, David Steenbergen, Julie Hughes, Jim Allen, Ed Wilson

Worth noting....from our by-laws
4.02 Qualification - Each director shall be:
(a) eighteen (18) or more years of age, and;
(b) a Senior member or Life member of the Club.
No member shall be elected as Commodore or Senior Vice-Commodore or Rear Commodore unless such member has at least a third (1/3) interest in a boat enrolled in the Club Fleet.
If that sounds like you... read on!

1.03 Rear Commodore (Updated: August 12, 2013):
a) appoint Chairs of the Sailing and Cruising Committees, the Adult Keelboat, Co-op, and Boat Maintenance coordinators, as well as coordinators or Committee Chairs as may from time to time be required for the on-the-water activities of the Club;
b) appoint the Director of the Sailing School;
c) work with the Committee Chairs to assist them to plan, organize, and supervise the on-the-water activities of the Club and to recruit their Committees;
d) ensure that racing equipment and club boats, with their equipment, are maintained in good condition;
e) ensure representation at appropriate racing/cruising groups on behalf of the Club;
f) serve, ex-officio, as a member of the Committees of part a);
g) liaise with Club Manager regarding on-the-water activities, and;
h) liaise with the Club Manager regarding Staff issues related to the Sailing School operations.

Q & A: Up close and personal with those who have held the position of Rear Commodore in the past.

What are the challenges of this role?
  • Juggling the needs of all our members and trying to give them the best programs we can given our resource constraints.
  • A lot of hard work, some of it time critical (when an event is scheduled, we can't just put it off!).
  • Every program in the portfolio is operational, the programs are all delivered in the sailing season, and the buck stops with you when anything goes amiss.
What are the rewards of this role?
  • You can build, buy, do tangible things - equipment, events, marketing, public relations - this is NOT an admin/HR/policy job.
  • Meeting people who take the Adult Learn to Sail and then become active in the Club.
  • Interacting with the Club racing fleet, taking pride in our racing program, reputation of ABYC for regattas and race management.
  • Contributing to the success of a top-notch Junior Program and management of the Club.
  • Seeing our Juniors out on the water, at ABYC or elsewhere. They are the future of our sport, and I suspect many will become leaders in our society.
Would you recommend taking the Rear Commodore position at ABYC?
  • Yes, if you can deal with the hard work and sometimes urgent requests, the rewards are well worth it. You will learn more about your Club, and what it's really about ... getting out on the water!
  • Yes, best job by far in any sailing club
  • Yes, if you're passionate about SAILING and the importance of the Club Sailing Programs (racing, cruising, adult and junior learn-to-sail, co-op)
  • Yes, if you're willing to do a lot of work all year round, including during the sailing season.
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to run for this position?
  • Have a clear vision as to what really makes a Sailing Club. Don't be afraid to look outside ABYC for successful solutions; be creative, outspoken, entertaining and engaging.
  • Get good people to help you and try to stay out of their way... I rely on my Committee Chairs, and without them we'd have no programs at all.
  • Your job is to help your Committee Chairs get the work done.
  • Make sure Committee Chairs are continuing or succession is already in place. Do the same for your successor.
  • One area that past Rear Commodores have struggled with is maintenance of Club boats. It's very difficult to get a volunteer to take ownership of this.
Let's start talking.... On the docks, around the BBQs, and at the picnic tables. Please contact any one of your friendly Nomination Committee members if you have any interest running for our Board. Not ready yet?  Try volunteering for one of the key committees reporting to that position.

Next Focus on the Board will outline the position of Vice Commodore, Financial Services.

Single/Double Handed Race

I hear it was a very interesting race. Maybe we should consider a course on flags and sound signals :-)
Thanks very much to Ian Gow, Rebecca Crumlish, Jim Allen, Helen Phillips, and Amanda Evans for handling this one. Much appreciated.

Here's my list for this week - pretty much the same as last week:

Steerers Regatta (PCYC), Thursday, July 14 and Friday, July 15
I need a mark layer/driver for Friday and a helper for both days.

Four Sisters Regatta (PCYC), Saturday, July 16 and Sunday, July 17
I need someone for the committee boat on both days.

ABYC Family Race #1 - Saturday, July 16
I need two or three people for the committee boat.

Eagerly awaiting responses...

Canadian Optimist Championships - Presenting Sponsor
Cineplex Media

New Presenting Sponsor for the 2016 Canadian Optimist Championships

I am pleased to announce that Cineplex Media has just signed on as the Presenting Sponsor for the 2016 Canadian Optimist Championships. ABYC is proud to be the host venue this year for the COC that takes place from August 18-24 and we are thrilled that Cineplex Media has come aboard. On behalf of ABYC and the 2016 COC organizing committee, I would like to thank Cineplex Media for their generous support.

I would also like to thank Skippers Plan, Parcel Design, Somerville Auto, CODA, and Bristol Marine for their generous sponsorship, as well as the individuals who have donated to COC to date. This support is incredibly helpful to us in hosting the 30th annual championship for Optimist sailors from across Canada, the United States, and Bermuda. These young athletes are our future Olympians!

The organizing committee volunteers are working hard to ensure that this event is a success and we are looking forward to welcoming over 125 Optimist sailors in August!  At this time, I would also like to thank two special people, Jim Allen and Kimberly Cudney, who have worked hard at securing sponsorships and donations for the 2016 Canadian Optimist Championships. Their efforts, along with the other volunteers, are helping to ensure a fun and exciting event for all.
