Race Committee

RCYC Open Regatta

It was a challenging weekend on Bravo course (can you say "general recall"?), with the bulk of the action happening on Sunday, but we got the job done and had many compliments from the racers at the club afterward - always a nice thing.

Thanks very much to the hard working people who made it happen:

RO: Dave Steenbergen

Committee Boat: Liz MacIntyre, Don MacIntyre, Leah Russell, Doug Heldman, Helen Phillips, David Webber

Pin/Mark Boats: Paul Brennan, Chris Lieb, Deepak Mathur, Rick Hayward, Robin Anderson , Tim Hill

...and it never ends. Here's this week's shopping list:

Steerers Regatta( PCYC) Thursday, July 14 & Friday, July 15

I need 2 or 3 more people for the committee boat and mark layers/drivers, and helpers for both days.

ABYC Family Race #1  Saturday, July 16

I need  a committee boat crew for this one.

Four Sisters Regatta (PCYC)  Saturday, July 16 and Sunday, July 17

Could use a couple more people on the committee boat and I need a mark layer/driver for both days.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Whitby 50 - Friday, June 24

As seen in the ABYC Events book (see page 18), the Whitby 50, the first TELDS race for 2016, is set for June 24. This race is hosted by the Whitby Yacht Club.

The race will consist of single-handed, double-handed, and full crewed boats racing in spinnaker and non-spinnaker divisions. The race will start at the Whitby Yacht Club and will sail west to the end of the Leslie Street Spit and back (a distance of approximately 50 miles). Race registration at WYC is scheduled for late afternoon on Friday, June 24. A BBQ for competitors starts at 6:00 PM, followed by the Skippers' meeting at 7:00 PM. First gun is scheduled for 8:00 PM. This race is being held close to the longest day of the year and sailing east to Whitby with the sun coming up early on the morning of June 25 should be as spectacular as the one enjoyed by those competing in the Susan Hood race a couple of weeks ago.

To assist in your planning, please see the following:

ABYC Open Report
Regatta Sponsorship @ ABYC

In my final column as CHAIR of this year's OPEN Regatta I have two items connected to the regatta and the club overall. First is corporate sponsorship at ABYC. With great past sponsors, we were lucky to continue that tradition, enlisting a range of new sponsors, including Evolution Sails, who stepped up to take ownership of the overall Regatta Title.

As Title Sponsor this year, Evolution Sails financial, product, marketing, and on-site event staff support helped our club generate what Rear-Commodore Paul Brennan (and many others) has suggested may be our most successful club regatta in twenty years. Wow! As Chair of a great team this year, that's exciting and gratifying, and a fitting result for the hard work everyone, including our sponsors, put into this event.

We added a $4000 Sail Prize this year as a big incentive to attract competitors, and Evolution Sails took ownership of that as well. It definitely worked. In addition to adding drone-based aerial filming of the competition, another important element of the club's Title Sponsor proposal this year was to offer "Rights of First Refusal" to Evolution Sails for the next two years, and Title Sponsor category exclusivity that comes with it. In short, if they like our Title Sponsor terms next year, both Evolution Sails and ABYC will reap the benefits of regatta growth and development that sponsorship continuity brings to our events.

Along with a vastly increased team effort with online and personal contact marketing to competitors and sponsors, each of these new event and sponsor elements are important parts of a template for future events. Overall, it is my opinion and professional experience that corporate sponsorship of our events is important to our club, and we need to recognize, acknowledge, and protect these companies and their vital support. Thanks again to Evolution Sails and to all of our sponsors for 2016.
Property Theft @ ABYC

I'm writing on this second related item both as OPEN Regatta CHAIR and as a senior member of ABYC. It is very unfortunate this is even necessary let alone linked to ABYC, or even more so to our annual regatta. And now to me personally as well. In speaking to many members this year. Theft of personal property at our club is an issue, and it is a problem that I believe we need to address publicly and also in a concrete and pro-active way by immediately increasing our club security.

Evolution Sails brought a very, very, large 5' x 30' foot brand new banner to our club for the OPEN. It was a fantastic representation of their company and the film production managed to capture some great shots of the ES banner on our front lawn on the Saturday. And then it was stolen sometime late Saturday night, after everyone enjoyed a great party. FYI, the banner was so large and heavy two people were needed to steal it. Putting it mildly, this theft is not just highly offensive and regrettable, it is simply unacceptable. It also happened last year with another regatta sponsor, and the year before with yet another sponsor, and in multiple instances of personal property stolen from our members.

And now just last Wednesday (June 15) my own brand new mountain bike was stolen from our club, right from the bike stand in front of our junior sailing club and fifty feet from our front door. Yes it was locked. No, it was not stolen overnight, but approximately between 9 PM and midnight while we were upstairs enjoying dinner and Wednesday games night. As this is a public column, I will just stick to the strong recommendation to our club that I and many other members have made in regard to ongoing theft at ABYC. We need more external security cameras posted around our club, and immediately. Supporting that very inexpensive addition would be an immediate change of security codes for club access. Furthering that would be an enhanced and continuing policy message to club members to maintain the privacy of ABYC access information.

For many reasons, including basic peace of mind, an inexpensive security camera program that everyone can access on their phone represents an important "percentage deterrent", protecting our investment in our personal property, our boats, and our club, including any company, organization, or individual we want associated with our club in the future. I hope most of you will agree that ABYC needs security cameras installed immediately so direct your concern to club management. Happy sailing.

Canadian Optimist Championships - Presenting Sponsor
Cineplex Media

New Presenting Sponsor for the 2016 Canadian Optimist Championships

I am pleased to announce that Cineplex Media has just signed on as the Presenting Sponsor for the 2016 Canadian Optimist Championships. ABYC is proud to be the host venue this year for the COC that takes place from August 18-24 and are thrilled that Cineplex Media has come aboard. On behalf of ABYC and the 2016 COC organizing committee, I would like to thank Cineplex Media for their generous support.

I would also like to thank Skippers Plan, Parcel Design, Somerville Auto, CODA and Bristol Marine for their generous sponsorship, as well as the individuals who have donated to COC to date. This support is incredibly helpful to us in hosting the 30th annual championships for Optimist sailors from across Canada, the United States and Bermuda. These young athletes are our future Olympians!

The organizing committee volunteers are working hard to ensure that this event is a success and we are looking forward to welcoming over 125 Optimist sailors in August!  At this time, I would also like to thank two special people, Jim Allen and Kimberly Cudney, who have worked hard at securing sponsorships and donations for the 2016 Canadian Optimist Championships. Their efforts, along with the other volunteers, are helping to ensure a fun and exciting event for all.

The Boulevard Club Cruise Report
The Boulevard Club Cruise - "A cruise by any other name...is still a fun cruise"

At first, I didn't know what to make of the cruise to the Boulevard Club. From the get-go, it was different than any other cruise I had been on. This small sailing club could only accommodate a small fleet. Because the Boulevard Club doesn't have a members' picnic or bbq area, there wasn't going to be a traditional social event and dinner.

So why go? Well, I hadn't been before so I wanted to see what the Boulevard Club was all about. It was a short distance and the weather forecast was AMAZING! I may as well go and experience it first-hand.

It turned out to be one of the most unique and enjoyable cruises I've been part of. 12 boats made their way on Saturday morning; the lucky ones sailed for about 10 minutes and the rest motored over in a short amount of time. By early afternoon, many of the ABees were already socializing from one boat to the other or were at the swimming pool taking in the beautiful sunshine.

Anytime there is a cruise to a club with a pool, you are sure to find kids. The regular kids crew were joined by two new recruits, Callum and Ollie from Aftica, and a good time was had by all. Around 4 PM, the parents joined the rest of the adults on Portofino for cocktail hour and set a new record of 23 people in Chris' cockpit while the kids boarded Akula for a movie. Thanks to everyone who brought appetizers and to Ron who provided tasty libations!

With many laughs and a few spills later, these happy sailors made their way to dinner where many enjoyed fine dining on the Boulevard Club's patio. The evening ended with one last dip in the pool by adults and kids alike.

Dinghy rides, leisurely breakfasts, and more poolside activity filled up the Father's Day Sunday. Slowly but surely members made their way back home and even took advantage of the 18 knots of wind pushing us back in the perfect direction.

If ever you're in doubt about joining a cruise or not - just do it. No matter the destination, amenities or size, a cruise is sure to be a fantastic community experience where we all come back with amusing adventures and memories to share.
