Contributions Come in Many Forms

Thank you to our Gardeners

One of the wonderful aspects of joining a self-help club is that you can express yourself by what and how you choose to contribute to the club. We have a group of members who sail and also like to garden.  Recently, we were cruising to Lakeshore Yacht Club and noticed the magnificent gardens. I learned from their Commodore that it was largely the contribution of one member who wasn't able to have a garden near his home. We are similarly blessed at ABYC however, in our case, we have numerous dedicated individuals working together.

I want to express how much we (Pat and I) enjoy the different garden locations around our club. We are blessed by a dedicated group of gardeners headed up by Ann Kay and by the contributions of Brian and Carolyn Neysmith. Under Ann's leadership, the gardens (maintenance;  trimming, planting, weeding, grooming) made up of annuals, perennials, shrubs, and even the trees are cared for by members of our club. Several years ago Brian and Carolyn decided to contribute and focus on the garden plot in front of the club entrance. They have continued to support this work even though they haven't been able to enjoy time at the club as much recently. Thank you to the dedicated gardeners of ABYC.

This year we returned the work of cutting grass and keeping the lawns groomed to our Bosuns. Under Adrian's supervision and guidance, they have already made a favorable impression on members and guests of our club. Numerous members have been impressed and complimentary of the effort and care our Bosuns are taking to ensure that our club looks amazing at all times.

During Sail Past, we recognized the many contributions of the Slipknots; dedicated women who raised money, worked and made an enduring mark on our club. I encourage everyone, regardless of your membership type (senior, associate, dinghy, etc.), to think about what and how you'll make your contribution and over time your mark on our club.

Boats Needed for Canadian Optimist Championship
We will be running two race courses for the Canadian Optimist Championship, August 19-25.

Sarah Ashbridge will be the Championship Fleet committee boat, Jack Cameron and Robert Humphrey will be mark boats (along with a boat coming from PCYC), and we need TWO more boats appropriate for the Green Fleet committee and the Championship Fleet finish boat.

A sailboat or powerboat with:
  • working windlass (25-55' of water, ideally 100' of rode)
  • working head
  • working engine
  • a bit of shade
  • an owner/operator available for the 6 days
would be ideal.

Lunch and plenty of thank-yous will be provided each day. You'd host 4-5 members of the race committee, and of course you'd get to help.

We can add a keep-away buoy at the transom to protect the boat from eager young sailors, and we'll provide tubes to attach to stanchions to hold flags.

As our Safety Chief mentioned, we are also looking for powerboats (ideally RIBs) for Safety and/or Judges. With most sailing schools still in session, these are at a premium this week.

If you have a boat (or a good lead on one!) that might be available, please don't hesitate to contact me: rearcom@abyc.on.ca

ABYC Souvenir Chairs

If you have been on the main floor lately, you will notice new (to us) tables and chairs in Duffy's and the main hall. I must say the room looks much nicer. As we have limited storage space, we are selling off the old bucket style chairs for $50.00 each. I am buying one myself for home. It will be a reminder of all the great times that I have spent at our club. Please contact the office if you wish to purchase one. Proceeds will go toward the purchase of some new kitchen equipment

See ya at the club!

   General Manager's Report

We've had a great month at the Club with many successful events under our belt and many more to come. This weekend is no exception, and I hope that everyone will treat dad to a meal at the Club this coming weekend for Father's day.

Over the next few months, the Food & Beverage Department will be making changes to improve the overall functionality and services around the Club.

We would like to wish Jan Van Gijssel well, as he has moved on to explore other opportunities. This is a great opportunity for the Club and look forward to these positive changes.

   Don Jackson Memorial

The memorial for Don Jackson is nearing completion and will be installed on the Western edge of the property overlooking the entrance to our harbour.  There will be a brief dedication ceremony on June 26 at 5:00 pm after the single/double handed race.  All members and friends of Don are invited.

Pride Month
As we reflect on the horrific tragedy in Orlando this past weekend, the Toronto Gay Sailing Club (TGSC) is asking all of our allies and supporters to stand strong and continue to uphold our shared sailing values: respect and inclusion.

As Pride Month officially launched on June 1, we have achieved important milestones across Canada, the ultimate seeing PM Justin Trudeau raising the Pride Flag over Parliament Hill. We know however that the LGBTQ Community is still facing challenges, reminding us of the importance of Pride celebrations around the world. Here are a few TGSC initiatives in which we hope our friends, allies, and supporters at ABYC will take part:

TGSC Get Out On The Water with SOY
While the official ABYC Get Out On The Water Day is set for June 25, part of the annual Ontario Sailing province-wide initiative, TGSC will once again take the LGBTQ participants of Supporting Our Youth, a program of the Sherbourne Health Centre, sailing for the afternoon of June 18, a week prior to ABYC's public event.

If you haven't done so already, be sure to let Rob Faulkner know that you are planning to take part in ABYC's Get Out On The Water - this is an important event for ABYC!

If you are not participating in the cruise to Boulevard Club or the RCYC Open this Saturday, consider making your boat available in the TGSC Flotilla this Saturday! The more boats, captains, skippers, and volunteers we have, the more LGBTQ Youth we can take sailing!

#TGSC PrideFlagChallenge
TGSC is spearheading the #PrideFlagChallenge, a campaign to have simultaneous Pride Flag Raising Ceremonies across the various yacht clubs in Ontario on June 24 at 18:00 and we are thankful for the forward thinking of the board of directors at ABYC for accepting to participate in the challenge.

With the generous support of Skippers' Plan, all clubs registered to be part of the challenge will receive a free Pride Flag to be flown proudly from the Pride Raising Ceremonies to July 3 at 18:00.

Please consider attending ABYC Pride Flag Raising Ceremony to show your support: all members are invited, especially all board members and flag officers.

Thank you to all our ABYC friends and allies,

Yanick Landry, President
Toronto Gay Sailing Club

Respectfully submitted to encourage a good night's sleep at ABYC.

Thanks,
Dick Binsley

Race Committee

It took some doing but we now have the RCYC Open and the ABYC Single/Double Handed race covered, so that takes care of June. Now, on to July:

Steerers Regatta (PCYC), Thursday, July 14 & Friday, July 15
I need it all for this one - committee boat crew, as well as mark layers/drivers, and helpers.

Four Sisters Regatta - Saturday, July 16 & Sunday, July 17
I need a couple of people for the committee boat on both days, as well as a mark layer/driver for Sunday.

ABYC Family Race #1 - Saturday, July 16
I need committee boat crew for this one.

That's my wish list for July. Let me hear from you - operators are standing by...

Finally, I would like to give a huge shout out and thanks to Don MacIntyre. We had a bit of a scheduling snafu on Thursday and found ourselves, at the last minute, without a Race Officer. Don stepped in and saved the night, so racers out there might want to think about buying him a beer next time you see him.

That's my wish list for this week... hoping to hear from you.

Whitby 50 - Friday, June 24

As seen in the ABYC Events book (see page 18), the Whitby 50, the first TELDS race for 2016, is set for June 24. This race is hosted by the Whitby Yacht Club.

The race will consist of single-handed, double-handed and full crewed boats racing in spinnaker and non-spinnaker divisions. The race will start off at the Whitby Yacht Club and will sail west to the end of the Leslie Street Spit and back (a distance of approximately 50 miles). Race registration at WYC is scheduled for late afternoon on Friday, June 24. A BBQ for competitors starts at 6:00 PM, followed by the Skippers' meeting at 7:00 PM. First gun is scheduled for 8:00 PM. This race is being held close to the longest day of the year and sailing east to Whitby with the sun coming up early on the morning of June 25 should be as spectacular as the one enjoyed by those competing in the Susan Hood race a couple of weeks ago.

ABYC Youth Race Team Update
On June 4 and 5, our Laser Radial Team made the trek to the Outer Harbor for the Heinz Gebhauer Spring War Laser Regatta, where they had two days of brisk breeze. They competed against 23 Master's sailors, many of who were sailing full rig lasers.

New team member Michael Magi had a strong showing on Sunday to win the youth class, and placed near the middle of the fleet overall, an impressive result despite having less sail area and (significantly) less weight than many of the adults that were racing. Bridget Latka, Hunter Dejean, and Martin Staadecker also had good results in the windy conditions.

Left to Right:
Back:  Coach Linor Berezin, Amy Glennie, Kate Evans, Davis Dejean, Oliver van Rossem,
Paul Staadecker
Front:  Wyatt Small, Keagan Valentine, Danny Assimakopoulos

This past weekend, members of the ABYC Junior Race Team attended the RCYC Skiff and Optimist Regatta. The championship fleet consisted of 34 competitors, and they completed five races in very windy and shifty conditions. The wind reached over 20 knots on Sunday, which provided our team with an opportunity to improve their hiking, bailing, and heavy-wind sailing. The high winds made it a particularly challenging regatta for our Green Fleeters, who managed to sail 6 races throughout the weekend. The team learned about the importance of keeping their boats flat and paying attention to the shifts even when there is a lot of wind.

Sarah Douglas (guest coach), Poet Bernard, Hunter Dejean, and Martin Staadecker

The team performed very well, taking home five awards in total. Oliver van Rossem finished in 3rd overall and ended the regatta with a bullet in the final race. Kate Evans was the 2nd female competitor overall, finishing in 11th place, just one point ahead of Paul Staadecker, who came in 12th. Danny Assimakopoulus finished in 17th place, earning the Mid-Fleet award. Davis Dejean, Wyatt Small, Annabel Gravely, and Amy Glennie came in 21st, 22nd, 23rd, and 25th respectively. Keagan Valentine finished 3rd place overall in the Green Fleet, with a first place finish in the last race. This was Claire Laderoute's first regatta, and she sailed outstandingly, coming 5th overall in the Green Fleet and achieving a 2nd place finish in the second race.

Finally, this past Sunday, the Laser Radial Team had a session with ABYC Corinthian athlete and National Sailing Team member Sarah Douglas who, together with coach Austin Stein, took the group out in 12C water and 20 knots of wind for some high wind training which left them cold, tired, and grinning from high speed reaches. Sarah will be back after she returns from Rio where she will be tuning and training with the Canadian Olympic Laser Radial rep Brenda Bowskill.

Youth Keelboat Program - Class Added

The ABYC Learn-to Sail Program is very pleased to report that (at the moment) there is only one spot left in the Youth Keelboat course we are offering from July 4-8. In order to be sure that we accommodate all of our young sailors, we have added a second class from July 11-15. Please call Roxanne to register!

FBYC Cruise Report
Frenchman's Bay Rodeo - It was a wild ride!!

We weren't sure if the weather was going to put a spoke in our wheels but our chief wranglers did a mighty fine job from letting us get rattled. The posse gathered for a skippers' meeting at 9:30 am on Saturday morning and we all giddied up soon after. Saturday's sail proved to be like licking the butter off a knife but Sunday was a different story. All the wagons burned the breeze on Sunday morning but, luckily, the ranch handlers were on the ready at home to help lasso any wayward broncos.

The cruising posse welcomed three greenhorns into the fold: Caper (Erika, Nate, and Isla), Java Jive 2 (Jason and Tyler) and Ruby Two Trips (Leah).  After all's said and done, 23 wagons set off on the wavy trail while 4 wagons arrived to the shindig by land.

The home-cooked meal was served out of the chuck wagon featuring beans in a delicious maple sauce (no cans), pulled pork, slaw, pasta salad, and cornbread. The rest of the posse did an amazing job with the apps and desserts, and no one went hungry. The sun set on a beautiful evening and a grand ole time was had by all. The Rodeo theme was chock full of fun and it was a delight to see all the cowboy hats, plaid, and bandanas on display at dinner.

A special thanks to our hosts Double Dutch (Jen and Fred) and Lion's Den (Sue and Chris) for organizing the whole kit and caboodle.  And, a special shout out to Paul B, Paul L, and Bruce, who come to mind, and all the others who were involved in the radio chatter on the way home, making sure we all returned safely.

Cruises
Note to members who do not normally participate in club cruises

Perhaps you are a day sailor and never really thought about an overnight cruise? Consider a club cruise to Mimico Cruising Club or Highland Yacht Club. Both these clubs are in relatively close cruising proximity to ABYC.

Don't like to use your galley? You need not prepare food for your cruise. MCC has a full service kitchen and bar and HYC is in close proximity to Cathedral Bluffs YC that has a full service kitchen and bar, and HYC is also not far from Bluffers Marina with a restaurant.

Shy? Don't be. Cruisers are a friendly lot and we can connect you with another member who is attending the cruise.

Young Sailor Scholarship
Greeting Sailors,

Just a reminder that the deadline date is approaching to apply for the Class Afloat $25,000 scholarship funding for young sailors. Last year, four young Canadian sailors received scholarships that made an incredible school year at sea possible for them. Please share this scholarship opportunity with your members through your newsletter, social media, and any other communication channels. Your members should complete and submit the application by June 15, 2016

The Young Sailor Scholarship was created to assist students - endorsed by their sailing school, sail-training program, or yacht club - to participate in the extraordinary educational experience of attending high school while sailing the Gulden Leeuw (Golden Lion), a spectacular, 230-foot, three-masted topsail schooner rigged Class 'A' tall ship. The scholarship will be awarded to young sailors who best demonstrate the values of excellence, integrity, community, teamwork, accountability, respect, commitment, and achievement in their academic and sailing lives.

Next year, Class Afloat students will sail an incredible 21,000 nautical miles (39,000 km) from Amsterdam, into the Mediterranean, south along the coast of Africa, then across to Brazil and down the coast of South America before they head east across the South Atlantic to Cape Town, South Africa (via Tristan da Cunha, the most remote inhabited island in the world). From Cape Town, they will cross the Atlantic a third time to the Caribbean and turn north to finish their voyage in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.
The Class Afloat community of 60 Canadian and international students will explore 18 ports of call, participate in community service projects, and learn as much about themselves as they will about the places they visit and the people they meet.

We are excited and proud to be able to offer this opportunity to your youth members. Please don't hesitate to contact us for more information about the Young Sailor Scholarship and this unique international education opportunity.
