What a terrific weekend to celebrate boating and the many activities afforded members of ABYC, "The Friendliest Club on the Lake". We (Pat and I) want to thank our fellow board members/partners and the staff for making the Commodore's Ball, Slipknots Dedication, Sailpast on the water, and New Boat Members Party so memorable and fun for all.

We also want to thank you the members for "Showing Up". Your presence helps make our club vibrant and a place to come with our guests/friends/family to share the beauty of our harbour and camaraderie of boating together.

Our memories include:

1. Being the first to see the club house so beautifully decorated for the Commodore's Ball. Sharing the great food and a few drinks with nearly 100 fellow members and guests. Dancing and chatting the night away.

2. Having the honour of dedicating a plaque commemorating the many contributions of the Slipknots and chatting with those who were able to attend in person.

3. While the Flag Ceremony had its glitches remembering the sounds of James Dewar on the pipes and our Fleet Chaplin Leigh Olson leading us in O'Canada and blessing the fleet. I promise to practice before next year's celebrations.

4. Getting out on the water with friends aboard Sarah Ashbridge on such a beautiful day to salute the Junior Sailors and nearly 100 boats of our fleet was both impressive and memorable.

5. We have traditionally used these events to raise funds for the Corinthian Fund and in recent years for our Junior Sailing programs too. Our Rear Commodore, Paul Brennan, came up with the new wrinkle of "Pirating" through the harbour with those Junior Sailors. I have to admit it's fun. Paul will tell us more in his report about how generous you have been again this year.

6. While this year's rendition of the steel drum band had its moments, the afternoon and evening was a time to relax and enjoy children, grandchildren, and spend time with fellow boaters. I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

7. Sunday brought a change in the weather however even that couldn't stop the New Boat Owners-Members Party. The New Boat owners did themselves proud and the many members who attended enjoyed great food, drinks, and a festive atmosphere. By the end, we were exhausted and needed time to decompress and rest.

Again, a special thank you to all members who volunteered their time to make these events so amazing. We hope you get great satisfaction from your participation as well. We're grateful for your support and friendship. It's when we strive to get the most out of life enjoying our club and the people we share it with that we know we had a memorable time.

Fundraising at ABYC

Thank you. Thank you! Thank you!!!

Once again we have stepped up to support our fellow sailors, and a big THANK YOU to everyone who contributed!

At our Commodore's Ball, we raised almost $3000 to replenish our Corinthian fund, which supports sailors at significant events away from our home waters. The last couple of years our juniors have been travelling further than anyone else, and have been supported by this fund, but our senior members are also eligible.

Bob Wilson and Yanick Landry (and Michael!) made the two largest donations and will be honoured with reserved parking spots for the next year.

Special thank you to Erika Fraser (future Opti Mom) and Isla (future Opti Sailor) for assisting me with the fund raising.

At Sailpast,

some of our junior racing team were out practising, and joined in our salute to the commodore. They and their coaches then joined the commodore and myself for our harbour collection to support the 2016 Canadian Optimist Championship, to be held here at ABYC August 18-24.  Please see Junior Sailing below for more information.

This weekend, we collected more than $2400, taking the total for this event to more than $10,000 in donations (NOT including commercial sponsorships!).

We'll be acknowledging all of the individual donations in the regatta program and on the website.

On July 1st, we'll see something very special at ABYC (and I'm not talking fireworks). Well, perhaps more comical than special... members of your board will be racing around the harbour in our last fundraiser for the 2016 Canadian Optimist Championship. To honour this important event and these amazing young sailors, the race will be in Optimist dinghies.

According to Wikipedia, "competitive sailors usually weigh between 30 and 60 kg (or between 65 lbs. and 130 lbs.). Optimists can be sailed comfortably by people from age 8 to 15."

I think it is safe to say that you will have an opportunity to see some very uncomfortable sailors in boats being raced very non-competitively. You may even get an opportunity to see the first time someone gets a kneecap dislocated by a boom.

More details on what I'm sure will become a historical event will be forthcoming!

It was a pleasure to see so many Club Members enjoying the Commodore's Ball and Sailpast weekend events. Surely a sign of a busy season ahead.

Earlier this year at the AGM and since then, I've spoken about the concept of being a good neighbour. This entails Members' taking responsibility for their actions and also looking out for the Club, members, and guests.

I have been made aware of two recent incidents where member's cars were damaged. In one case, it appears that someone had backed into a car, the other where the hood appeared to have been scratched up. Under the concept of "good samaritan", should anyone have seen or be aware of the circumstances, or witness events going forward, please advise the office promptly.

Other things to remember; please do:
  • Tie up and secure halyards, and other noise makers so they do not clang against your mast and disturb others.
  • Ensure power cords and water hoses do not present a trip hazard.
  • Observe proper flag etiquette. The Canadian flag and burgees should be stowed when no one is on board.
  • When using the picnic areas, clean up any trash and place it in the appropriate receptacles.
Thank you.

By all accounts our official start to the summer, Commodore's Ball, and Sailpast were a resounding success. I was not able to attend as I was racing in the Susan Hood overnight race with the crew on The Cat Came Back. We were second in our division and congratulations to Murray, Winnie, and the crew on Lively who took first in the same division. Well done!

Thank you to all of the staff for working so hard to make the weekend a success. In the past week, we have been getting some new (to us) furniture. Our club manager, Karen Meier, scored these tables and chairs from another club and there is a bit more to come. Rumour has it a nicer coffee station may arrive! Thanks Karen, the clubhouse is really starting to look better.

As we are starting to move toward a more cashless club, the staff will start asking you if you have your membership card to start your tab. There have been a few instances where members have been charged food and beverage without being in the clubhouse on the day the charge was incurred. As well, with new staff on the bar, it makes it easier for them to get the tab open under the right membership number. If you do not have your card with you at the club, you can still give your membership number. At the end of your day, please check your bill for accuracy and sign off on it.

One sticky point I have to bring up is dress code in the clubhouse. Bare feet are not permitted and, gentlemen, please no tank tops or muscle shirts on the main floor.

Well, that's all I have for this week. See ya at the club!

Slipknots Ceremony
During the festivities of SailPast, a ceremony was held honouring the members of Slipknots, an organization of Club wives/partners during the '60s, '70s, and '80s when women were not allowe d to become senior Club members. In recognition of their significant contributions to ABYC during this period, Commodore Bob Hedley unveiled a plaque now permanently installed in the Clubhouse foyer paying tribute to the Slipknots and welcoming all sailors dedicated to the sailing culture that we hold dear.

Pictured below are former Slipknots members Dianne Bott, Grace Stapleton, Gladys Humphrey, Pat Steenbergen, Rosemarie Nonnewitz, Patty Caron, Carolyn Hughes, and Senga Gray.

New Boat Owner's Party
The deluge of Sunday afternoon wasn't a deterrent to more than a dozen new boat owners!  In true ABYC tradition they provided us with a fantastic afternoon of cocktails, food, and fun.  As always, the competition was tough. Race Committee

RCYC Open Regatta, June 18 & 19

I got zilch response to last week's request, so here goes again:
I need a mark setter/driver and helper, as well as 1 or 2 more people for the committee boat. I'd like to know as early as possible that I have enough people (to keep that ever-present stress-o-meter in the green zone). So, if you're thinking about it, please don't wait until the last minute to let me know.

C'mon - it's one weekend and you can log most of your 20 work hours in one fell swoop.

ABYC Single/Double Handed Race - Sunday, June 26

I could use one more person for this one.

OPTI Canadians - Friday, August 19 to Wednesday, August 24

We will be running 2 courses for this event, so I need twice the people. There will be a practice race on Friday, with racing Saturday to Wednesday. Because this is a national championship, we would like people who can commit to the full 6 days, for continuity's sake. It's a tall order, I know, but I already have some people signed up and need more. This will be a big event and last minute scrambling is not an option. Go give it a think and let me know, ASAP, if you can help.

Please don't let the kids down, folks.

That's my wish list for this week... hoping to hear from you.

ABYC OPEN Evolution Sails
CHALLENGE Regatta

CHALLENGE! Met

Hi ABYC'rs.

Please bear with me as this week rightfully demands a longer column, but it's worth it!

From all accounts, it appears the 2016 ABYC OPEN Evolution Sails CHALLENGE! REGATTA was a success! Great sponsors showed up, our Race Committee brought their "A" game, and a fantastic ABYC BIG Regatta Team got the boats out from all over Western Lake Ontario, including New York and even Detroit. Evolution Sails initiated a hot new sail prize, and we even created a new beer for the OPEN! Even bigger surprise, the May weather was HOT! What looked like a broiler Saturday morning became light airs building just enough for some truly competitive racing over the entire weekend.

With the competitors and sponsors happy, the weather hot and the drinks cold, the ABYC OPEN party Saturday night was waaay better than alright. Kudos and Flags to the multiple ABYC boats that took multiple honours, particularly in the new PHRF Club Team Challenge Competition! Word to the wise for other clubs: Challenge ABYC to a sailing competition and we will definitely show up. A total of 6 PHRF Challenge Club Teams from ABYC entered the competition! (And yes, ABYC won. Yawn ;-).

For the last decade, regatta boat numbers have been going down at clubs all over the lake. ABYC had 68 in 2015, down from 91 six years ago. This year we managed to attract 105! That's a big jump, and for multiple reasons: With help from the new phrfracersassociation.com, we had a new regatta format with multiple options for competitors, a more inclusive focus on PHRF fleet racing that other clubs will emulate, the new sail prize from Evolution Sails, and, with ABYC, a new focus on marketing and sponsorship from a great new bunch of volunteers. Not to mention the fantastic weather that made everyone want to shake off a long cold spring and go racing.

Let's not forget the Hollywood North Drone Film Team that had everyone dreaming of their big movie break. Thanks to Alex and Sean, the professional pilots behind Aerial Vision and the film production company that shot the footage. Just wait until you see these films! More on that later.

Thank You

It takes a lot to stage this event, in particular GREAT sponsorship. I want to thank Title Sponsor, Evolution Sails, for embracing the ABYC OPEN with their full financial, product, and staff support.
Presenting Sponsors, Henderson Brewing and Great Lakes Offshore Services, were enthusiastic early adopters for the OPEN, and indeed critical to the event's overall success. Supporting Sponsors Bristol Marine and Mount Gay also played big parts, and you can't have an event without prize support, so many thanks to UKSails and Rack Attack for their participation.

Special thanks go to ABYC Race Committee and our extended R/C partners from QCYC and RCYC for helping our club to run, score, judge, and manage the multiple race courses. Strategic light air racing made things interesting for RC management but boy did they pull it off. Of course, ABYC PRO's (Professional Race Officer's) Dave Steenbergen and Paul Brennan deserve special mention, and particular praise to QCYC's Graham McDougall for his guidance, patience, and his PHRF Charlie Course team's enthusiastic assistance to a big fleet of PHRF competitors as we welcome newer racers to our sport. As usual, Molly Asseltine corralled a stellar R/C volunteer crew for the weekend. Many thanks R/C.

Thank you to all ABYC members for supporting this event, and putting up with parking and other interruptions for the weekend. We tried hard to make the great entertainment, and fantastic food and bevies, available to all so, if you didn't race, I hope you came to the party and shared the fun. Thanks to Paul James and Nancy for "Rockin The Dock" Saturday afternoon, and with the Weathered Legs Saturday Night, well, the crowd roared and everybody danced. Great show guys.

In addition to fantastic volunteers, nothing this big can happen without great staff. Thanks to new GM Karen Meier and new Head Bosun Adrian Badea for getting their feet wet with their first big ABYC Regatta, (superb jobs Karen, Adrian). Thanks to Chef Jan and his Taste Experience crew for a really great buffet all weekend. Thanks to F/B manager Katie Haynes and her staff managing like the pro's they are. Well, just another day at the ABYC office. Oh right, the office! How would ABYC function without Roxanne and Lydia? With too many important functions and titles, I'm just going to call these great ladies the ABYC CIA (Critical Information Ambassadors). Thanks everyone.

Finally, a huge thanks to race competitors. Thanks for putting ABYC on your early calendar, for getting your boats ready and crews together, and despite potential weather questions, for actually showing up and helping to create such a fun event. ABYC and the OPEN Regatta Team are honoured to play host to such a fantastic group of race enthusiasts. With great One-Design and IRC fleets, and much larger PHRF fleet racing, the Big OPEN Regatta format is back, more fun, and better than ever at ABYC.

Last, movie credits are important, and an old film and theatre adage says: "There are no small parts, just small actors." Not this time, and not at ABYC. As Chair of this year's OPEN Regatta, I was immensely fortunate to have a big and absolutely fantastic OPEN team of ABYC sailors VOLUNTEER their services to bring this 90 day CHALLENGE! mission together, and I am astounded by their individual talents and exceptional commitments. Brian Fraley, take a bow. Simply put, and especially including our phenomenal ABYC staff, this successful regatta would not have happened without this particular "Capital A" team listed below. Please read on (and thank all of these fellow club members for their excellent efforts).

The films are in post-production and will be coming soon to a screen near you. Paul, thanks for your support. Bob, who knows what will happen next year but have your people call my people and we'll do lunch. Great job all around folks. Thanks.

ABYC Optimist Race Teams at Sailpast
Members of the ABYC Junior and Senior Optimist Race Teams were out in full force this weekend! In addition to their regular Sunday Spring Training, several members of the team came out on Saturday to take part in the Sailpast. Keagan Valentine, winner of the inaugural Mike Goldfarb Award as ABYC's top Green Fleet sailor in 2015, participated in the Raising of the Flags representing the Junior Division and raising the Ontario flag. Senior Race Team coach Linor Berezin, assisted by Mike Goldfarb, and the team then headed out to take part in the Sailpast in their Optimists, and continued to train for a few hours before joining the Commodore and Rear Commodore in the fleet inspection.

Canadian Optimist Championship
With ABYC hosting the Canadian Optimist Championships this August (www.2016opticanadians.com), our race teams are helping to fundraise for the regatta! Team members and their parents were seen around the club on Saturday collecting donations and selling regatta clothing. The sound of air horns could be heard throughout the club and Ashbridge's Bay Park as the team assisted the Commodore and Rear Commodore in collecting donations during the fleet inspection!

Thank you so much to all who have supported the fundraising initiatives for the Championships to-date!

For those who haven't yet had a chance to support the upcoming regatta, we have partnered with SailCanada and all donations over $25 are eligible for a tax receipt. We also have a great variety of clothing on sale with all proceeds helping to support the cost of the event.  Not only is the clothing stylish and in support of a great cause, but we are also selling these at much lower than suggested retail pricing, so they're great value as well! Please see Friendly Reminders below for clothing information.

Please also feel free to contact us with any questions, to make a donation, or purchase merchandise at: [email protected].

Young Sailor Scholarship
Greeting Sailors,

Just a reminder that the deadline date is approaching to apply for the Class Afloat $25,000 scholarship funding for young sailors. Last year, four young Canadian sailors received scholarships that made an incredible school year at sea possible for them. Please share this scholarship opportunity with your members through your newsletter, social media, and any other communication channels. Your members should complete and submit the application by June 15, 2016

The Young Sailor Scholarship was created to assist students - endorsed by their sailing school, sail-training program, or yacht club - to participate in the extraordinary educational experience of attending high school while sailing the Gulden Leeuw (Golden Lion), a spectacular, 230-foot, three-masted topsail schooner rigged Class 'A' tall ship. The scholarship will be awarded to young sailors who best demonstrate the values of excellence, integrity, community, teamwork, accountability, respect, commitment, and achievement in their academic and sailing lives.

Next year, Class Afloat students will sail an incredible 21,000 nautical miles (39,000 km) from Amsterdam, into the Mediterranean, south along the coast of Africa, then across to Brazil and down the coast of South America before they head east across the South Atlantic to Cape Town, South Africa (via Tristan da Cunha, the most remote inhabited island in the world). From Cape Town, they will cross the Atlantic a third time to the Caribbean and turn north to finish their voyage in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.
The Class Afloat community of 60 Canadian and international students will explore 18 ports of call, participate in community service projects, and learn as much about themselves as they will about the places they visit and the people they meet.

We are excited and proud to be able to offer this opportunity to your youth members. Please don't hesitate to contact us for more information about the Young Sailor Scholarship and this unique international education opportunity.
