Sailpast Instructions

1. Objective: To have the ABYC fleet pass astern of the Sarah Ashbridge in a neat line to salute the Commodore, with friends and family and congeniality, and without collision, injury, mishap, profanity, or protest.

2. Schedule: Sailpast procession will commence on the water at 1315h, or as soon as practical thereafter, with the first boat reaching the Sarah Ashbridge at approximately 1330h. To facilitate a prompt start (so you can sail or return to the dock for refreshments), we suggest sail boats rig prior to the Opening Ceremonies (noon) and be prepared to depart the harbour immediately following the ceremonies.

3. Assembly: Keelboats and powerboats will assemble just downwind of the
inflatable mark. The location of the inflatable mark will be announced at the Opening Ceremonies. Dinghies will assemble to windward of Sarah Ashbridge

4. Course:
  • Keelboats & Powerboats: From the inflatable mark reach away on port tack ¼ mile to establish separation, then return on starboard tack to the inflatable mark leaving it on port, leaving Sarah Ashbridge on starboard during the salute.
  • Dinghies: Dinghies will proceed from Sarah's starboard side, on port tack, astern of Sarah for the salute.
5. The Start: At approximately 1315h, Wadadli will lead the keel boats away from the inflatable mark on port tack (away from the Sarah Ashbridge). They will tack in succession and sail back toward the inflatable mark and the Sarah, with the first boat arriving at approximately 1330h.

6. Sequence:
  • Wadadli (Senior Vice-Commodore) flying a LIMA (follow me) flag:
  • Junior sailors and other dinghies (escorted by coaches and Rear Commodore) (dinghies will insert themselves into the procession as the lead boat passes Sarah),
  • Keelboats (largest to smallest; if your boat is faster or slower than typical for its size, adjust your position accordingly)
  • Powerboats (largest to smallest).
7. 360 Rule: If you do not find a space to join the line in an orderly way, circle around and try again. There is no limit on the number of 360s permitted before finding space in the line.

8. Speed Control: Sailboats are encouraged to reduce sail or use power to optimize for maneuverability, not speed.

9. Rules of the Road: All boats are reminded of their obligation to keep a good lookout. There will be a lot of traffic, and the mast of an Optimist dinghy may not be visible from your cockpit.

10. This is Not a Race: Sail nice! You may not barge, request mark room, or force a boat up to overtake. Spinnakers may be flown AFTER you have completed your salute.

11. Saluting: Boats will pass the stern of and salute the Commodore.
  • Sailboats will salute by luffing the headsail (or mainsail, if cat rigged).
  • Power boats will dip the Ensign.
  • Only the Commodore makes a hand salute.
  • Salutes of other forms are not permitted (e.g. those practiced in New Orleans' French quarter, or on the 400 on a holiday weekend, etc.).
  • The salute should start when your boat is about one boat length from Sarah. If possible, the crew should stand and face the Commodore.
12. Finish: Once boats salute they should clear the area promptly and avoid the procession.

13. Radio Communications: All boats which are equipped with VHF radios should monitor channel 71.

14. Regrets: Tradition dictates that all club members participate in the Sailpast, on their own or on another member's yacht. Good manners require that a member unable to participate will send his/her regrets to the Commodore.

Fundraising at the Commodore's Ball & Sailpast

ABYC has a great tradition of fundraising to help sailors, through our Corinthian Fund (which supports ABYC members competing at major events away from our home waters), and for special events/purchases. This coming weekend is traditionally a time we raise funds, and this year is no exception.

Commodore's Ball
Starting now, and until Friday evening at 2100h, we will be accepting pledges for donations to the Corinthian Fund.  The Corinthian Fund is not restricted to supporting youth, so unfortunately tax receipts cannot be issued.

At the end of the evening, we'll announce the total amount raised, and those who have made the two largest donation pledges will be acknowledged with reserved parking spots for a one year period.  Mid-evening updates may be provided, in the event that anyone wishes to increase their pledge.

A group of people may jointly pledge and, if that pledge is one of the two highest, the group will have the reserved parking spot to share.

If you will not be attending, you can send your pledge in advance by email to me rearcom@abyc.on.ca.

Last year, Bob Wilson and the Cruising Cartel were acknowledged for their support; who will it be this year?

Sailpast
At Sailpast, we will be collecting in support of the 2016 Canadian Optimist Championship, to be held at ABYC this August. We have a few sponsors, but private donations allow us to provide the best possible event for our very youngest sailors. This is a Sail Canada sanctioned youth event, so donations of $25 or more will receive tax receipts.

As in the past, we will be having a collection when boats are back in the harbour.  We will have donation forms and envelopes available at the opening ceremonies. If you require a receipt,  you can fill out the form and drop it in a collection bucket when we pass through the harbour. Cheques, cash, and credit cards can be used, and if you wish to use the same credit card that ABYC has on account for you, you can tick the box and our office will enter it for you.

Any donation of $100 or more will receive a special 2016 COC hat as a thank-you gift!

If you are not going to be present at Sailpast, you can call the office and Roxanne will be glad to take your contribution information over the phone.

Thank you in advance for any support you can provide to these two great causes.  We'll update you on the results in next week's S2S!

Billets and Boats Required
Opti Canadians Regatta - August 19 to August 24

My name is David Lewis and I am the person providing Regatta Safety for this event. The Safety Team will be made up of 8 people and 4 boats (preferably inflatables). There will be 2 courses and 2 boats on each course.  Members of the team are coming from Kingston, Napanee, Hamilton, and Toronto.

I am billeting the 2 from Kingston and therefore have no more room. I require billets for 2 adult male members. One needs all 5 nights and one only needs 2 nights (Monday and Tuesday).

In addition to billets, I need a couple more boats, preferably 14 to 18 foot inflatables with good motors. If you are able to provide a fibreglass or similar boat, I would still love to hear from you. Email me.

Dock Boxes

Recently there has been renewed interest in dock boxes and two were approved for placement. Subsequently, the Board has received commentary from a few members about the program following a question about dock boxes at the past AGM.

Your Board will be reviewing and providing clear guidelines about dock boxes and will communicate these at the earliest opportunity. In the meantime, there is a freeze on any new or additional dock boxes.

ABYC's Garden
Summer Is Here!

Way too fast, but I'm sure there are not too many complaints...
We have a very large piece of land to maintain; with planting, weeding, watering, and just plain old maintenance required.

There are several wonderful members who are always seen with snips in hand, rakes and hoses, but it is still not enough.

We need lots of help to upkeep our property and it seems to be falling by the wayside. Nancy Ogden, Mike and Lynda Robertson, and Liz Heron, to name just a few, work tirelessly at trying to keep our premises looking good, but we need more hands on a daily basis. Please, whenever you go to your boat, take a look around you and throw on a hose for just a few minutes, pull some weeds, or tidy up an area that you think does not look up to our Club standards.

I have just come back from the Club and am pretty sure that at this rate, there will be little left of any of our hard work of planting in the gardens by the end of June. These plants were bought by our Club, which means that it is your money! It would be such a shame to lose it all.

So a plea is going out to you all to please help on a regular basis and make our Club look like we are proud Members.

Thanking you in advance,

Ann Kay
Get Out On The Water
On June 25, ABYC will host its first Get Out on the Water event, which will be an open house to welcome our neighbours in the Beaches. A meet and greet will take place between 11am-12pm and will be followed by a tour of the club. The visitors will then be invited out for a sail, leaving the dock at 1pm and returning at 3pm.

If you would like to volunteer for this event and/or take visitors on your boat, please let me know. I can be contacted at robfaulkner@remaxhallmark.com or (416) 917-3314.

ABYC Open Challenge Regatta
We had close to five hours total of AP time on Bravo course, but good things come to those who wait and we managed to get in two races each day - a very good outcome, all things considered. Major thanks to the RC volunteers:

RO: Paul Brennan
Committee Boat: Arlene Taylor, Liz MacIntyre, Helen Phillips, Trixie Hoyer, Max Smith
Pin/Mark Boats: Pat Lymburner, Ken McAlpine, Leah Russell, Jory Gibson, Dave Bruyea

...and also PRO, Dave Steenbergen, who spent the weekend onboard the Sarah Ashbridge with us.
Thanks also to those who answered my S2S call but were not needed, as I had managed to assemble a team. There will be another time, guys.

And speaking of another time :-)  here is my wish list for June:

June 18 & 19 - RCYC Open Regatta
I need mark layers/drivers and helpers as well as another body or two on the committee boat.

Sunday, June 26,  ABYC Single/Double Handed Race
I need an RO and committee boat crew.

You know the drill - let me know ASAP if you can help with either of these events.

And finally, I have to make a correction. Last week, when I mentioned the practice race starts for the Co-op people, I got it wrong. It was the Adult Learn to Sail - Introduction to Racing group out there...my bad. Apologies to Peter Woodall and his students.

Keelboat Racing Basics Report
On May 15, ABYC held a Keelboat Racing Basics course to provide rusty and would-be racers with the fundamentals of sailboat racing. The course stepped of from where Wendy Loat's "Using the Rules to Your Advantage: Rules You Need to Know to Win" and "Learn the Rules of Racing" Toonie Thursday talks ended, providing a practical, on-water experience.

The course participants along with instructors Peter Woodall and David Cloutier took to the ABYC fixed mark course in club boats Tricana and Feeling Good to practice several starts and ended with an exciting one-on-one race to the finish.

"The Racing Basics course demystified some of the more nuanced and misunderstood aspects of racing and gave us the skills to competently participate in racing activities."  The course was well received by the participants and the club has gained 8 newly minted race crew and skippers!  I'm certain future iterations of this course will prove beneficial to all who attend.

A very special thanks to the crew of the Sarah Ashbridge for providing the students with a realistic race start and to Martin Gibb for the additional photography.

Youth Racing Report
ABYC's youth racing programs are actively racing and training this spring. On May 21/22 at the TS&CC Icebreaker Regatta youth team members Ian Doell, Michael Magi, and Connor Bowman sailed in the often tricky conditions of Humber Bay in a fleet of 21 hard core Laser Radial sailors to kick off the season. The regatta flee was deep in talent, including multiple members of the Canadian National Sailing Team as well as a various Ontario Sailing Team members. Ian Doell was the top ABYC youth team boat in 10th place.   ABYC Corinthian athlete and National Team member Sarah Douglas placed fifth, and Clara Gravely, who graduated from the ABYC youth program last year, represented ABYC and the Ontario Sailing Team, while ABYC alumnus Quinten Beelik earned a 6th place as well.  On the same weekend, our Optimist Race team was participating in a three-day training clinic hosted by RCYC in Toronto Harbour, training with boats from throughout Eastern Canada, including Quebec and Nova Scotia.

In the spring, there's hardly any time to train it seems as the next stop for the team was a trip to Hamilton this past weekend, where four Laser Radial sailors and seven Optimist Team members faced shifty conditions in Hamilton Harbour, and up to 20 knots of wind, a good spring workout to say the least.  Ian Doell, who graduated from Optimists only last year was 2nd overall in the 22 boat Laser Radial fleet, while Hunter Dejean placed 8th and earned top female place, new team member Michael Magi was 9th, and Bridget Latka carded a 12th place. Bridget, Michael, and Hunter were sailing in their first Laser Radial event, showing that their Optimist racing background has prepared them well in their move to the Laser Radial class.

On the Optimist course, ABYC sailors turned in great results, with Oliver Van Rossem placing 3rd of 35 boats. Oliver will represent ABYC at the North American Championships in Antigua in July, having earned a qualifying spot at last year's Optimist Canadians in Squamish, BC. Nathan Latka placed 7th overall and won his age category in the Blue fleet, with Danny Assimakopoulos also placing 3rd in Blue fleet. Kate Evans also cracked the top 10 overall in 9th. Annabel Gravely was 14th, and relative newcomers Davis Dejean and Aidan Massey-Garrison had some good races too, as Aidan graduated from Green fleet to the highly-competitive Championship fleet.

The newly founded doublehanded team continues to train at ABYC in 420's, and next weekend some of the Opti team will participate in Sailpast while the Radial fleet races at Water Rats.  Sunday training continues through June, with ABYCs full Learn-To-Sail program running for eight weeks starting on July 2 (some spots are still available). Finally, ABYC will have centre stage in the Canadian Opti fleet as we host the Canadian Championships August 18-24; there are lots of ways to be a part of that event as a volunteer.

Back row left to right: Coaches Mary Claire Kartner and Linor Berezin,
Racers Ian Doell, Michael Magi, Bridget Latka, Hunter Dejean, and Oliver Van Rossem
Front Row Left to Right: Danny Assimakopoulos, Nathan Latka, and Davis Dejean

ABYC's Lakeshore Cruise Race
Late report, Mother Nature delivered more wind than promised and most of the club enjoyed a nice run toward Lakeshore Yacht Club. A half dozen boats made it to the afternoon with diminishing winds. Only Hazel and Dan of Satori stuck it out, enduring blistering boat speeds of 0.8 kns. to clinch the bragging rights of winners of the first cruise race of the season.

Invitation Fundraising Boat Ride on the T-SAR 2 Rescue Boat

As the frequency of Toronto Search and Rescue patrols across the waterfront grow, our fuel bill also grows! So, we thought a fun way to raise gas money would be to invite a few of our supporters out for a boat ride. A charitable donation is required but you can be sure it is going to be a great cause.

Please take a moment to read the above detailed invitation is attached, or forward it to a friend who may be interested in a very unique opportunity to view the Toronto skyline from the newest rescue boat on the water.

This year, our team will be on patrol from May 25 to October 5. Wednesday nights will be from 6-9 pm and we will be out one day on most weekends, from noon to 6 pm. Our main area of coverage is the eastern gap to east of Bluffers park, although we may be in other areas as required.

The fundraising boat rides will be on Tuesday or Thursday evenings from 7-8:30 pm. We would be happy to meet folks at their power or sail club if they have five guests confirmed for the boat ride. Alternate evenings than those listed are available on a best efforts basis.

Lastly, we will be looking to expand our team for 2017 so please have interested parties email Petr, our unit leader, at Petr.Jano@t-sar.com.
