Introducing the New General Manager

Well, it gives me great pleasure to tell you a little more about our new Club General Manager, Karen Meier. Karen was initially introduced to the membership on April 25 during the General Meeting however I continue to meet members who haven't heard the terrific news.

Karen is an accomplished Club House Manager, having worked at the Weston Golf and Country Club for seven years. She was eager to learn and develop her leadership capacity further so Karen joined the 2015 Pan Am Games and, for about 20 months, took on the challenge of planning and managing all Catering, Cleaning, and Waste Operations for the West Zone, which was made up of 21 sports venues in total.  In addition to her many career accomplishments, Karen has an active family life.

Karen is responsible for all staff who work at ABYC and will be working closely with the committee chairs and board members to make members and guests experiences a delight.

Please take time to introduce yourself to Karen the next time you are at the club.

Sail on!

General Manager's Report
It's hard to believe that a month has flown by since joining the ABYC family. It has been an incredible journey so far and I look forward to seeing all of the Club Events come to fruition. Be sure to look for my reports in the coming weeks as we add some great dining opportunities at the Club for the summer.

I am happy to announce that we have switched our coffee offerings at the Club. We now have a new single cup brewer for members to enjoy. All of the coffee will be kept at the bar so be sure to ask your server for a tutorial on our new machine for our new coffee.

ABYC Board Elections - Fall 2016
Your nominating committee is looking for members interested in running for a Board position in the Club's upcoming Elections this September.  This year's available positions (two-year term) are as follows;
  • Rear Commodore
  • Vice Commodore, Member Services
  • Vice Commodore, Finance
Per the Club's by-law 4.02 Qualification - Each director shall be:
  • (a) eighteen (18) or more years of age, and
  • (b) a Senior member or Life member of the Club.
  • No member shall be elected as Commodore or Senior Vice-Commodore or Rear Commodore unless such member has at least a third (1/3) interest in a boat enrolled in the Club Fleet.
In the next few Ship2Shore editions, your Nominating Committee will be highlighting one of the available board positions.  Included in the article will be a detailed description of the role's duties and responsibilities along with comments and advice from members who have previously enjoyed the positions.

If you are interested in learning more about running for the Board in the 2016 elections, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Nominating Committee.  If you are not ready to step into the board position, perhaps you'd be interesting in leading one of the Committees directly reporting to the position....We can help with introductions.

Petra Fischer (Chair: Dash)
Ofra Gershman (Blackswan)
Gus Gillespie (Isogon)
Mike Leroux (Mikron)

Slipknots Plaque Unveiling
The ABYC Archives Committee will hold a reception for ABYC Slipknots members and unveil a plaque in their honour.

Saturday, June 4
(which is also the morning of Sail Past)
11:00 am

The women of Slipknots contributed greatly to our Club in the 1960s, '70s, and '80s, and we encourage all current members to stop by and show them your appreciation. The plaque unveiling will take place in the Clubhouse foyer.

Seawall Repair
Before going cruising, racing, or away for the weekend last Saturday, about 20 or more dedicated ABYC members helped to complete the pouring of the concrete to finish the White Wall Seawall Repair from 8:00 am Saturday morning until about 2:30 pm. This was heavy continuous work before the concrete began to set for over 300 feet of seawall.

Check out the pictures below and on the Picasa link and make a point of saluting and thanking these members for their extra contribution to finish the Seawall Repair for this season.

Mast Up Haul
We have been asked to dust off the learnings from the Mast Up trial of a number of years ago, and to review its feasibility given that there is still demand for it as an offering.

Please watch this space in the next few weeks for an invitation to complete an interest survey.

TS&CC Icebreaker

This is an event where we help them and, in return, they help us with our regatta. Thanks very much to David Bruyea and Jim Prall for giving up their long holiday weekend and manning the mark boat to help us honour our obligation.

Thanks also to Mike and Lynda Robertson for lending a hand to the co-op people so they could practice race starts and get a feel for things on the start line. We ended up with a film crew on board the Sarah and a good time was enjoyed by all.

ABYC Open Challenge Regatta, May 28 & 29

It's this weekend folks, and repeated pleas have gone mostly unanswered. I still don't have full mark boat crews and that stress-o-meter that was inching to the red zone is now all the way over, not a particularly good way to start the season. I need a mark layer/driver for Sunday and helpers for both days. PLEASE let me know ASAP (preferably yesterday) if you can help. I have to know if I'm going to be able to put crews together or not. It's our own regatta, folks. Let's see some enthusiasm and club support.

LSYC Cruise Report
What better way to kick-off the unofficial start to the summer than with the club's first official cruise of the season (greater than 1 n.m. - right Nancy?) to Lakeshore Yacht Club. 18 boats attended, including two families with kids and one new member to the club - welcome Leah! While some boats were able to fill their sales with the light winds, most motored over for the Mardi Gras-themed gathering.

A huge thank you to the hosts, Carolyn & Ralph (Latis) and Joyce & Jamie (Aleta Azul) who served up a Cajun spiced chicken on the grill, andouille sausage, red beans and rice salad, cole slaw, and Louisiana style biscuits for dinner on Saturday night. Plus, traditional Cajun tunes set the mood throughout the evening.

On Sunday, Carolyn introduced Geocaching to a group of us, which took us on an adventure through Colonel Samuel Smith Park. Some were more successful at finding the treasures than other's (this writer speaks from experience!).  People took advantage of the warm, sunny weather by stand up paddle boarding, roller blading, walking/hiking, dog walking, biking, riding in the dinghy, and a Mahjong game broke out (four of us played in the club house)...

Greeted by another beautiful day on Monday, many of us got one more walk in before departing with the rest of the fleet. Like Saturday, the wind was mostly light, but it sure was great to be on the water.

The next cruise is May 28 & 29 at Etobicoke Yacht Club.

Invitation Fundraising Boat Ride on the T-SAR 2 Rescue Boat

As the frequency of Toronto Search and Rescue patrols across the waterfront grow, our fuel bill also grows! So, we thought a fun way to raise gas money would be to invite a few of our supporters out for a boat ride. A charitable donation is required but you can be sure it is going to be a great cause.

Please take a moment to read the above detailed invitation is attached, or forward it to a friend who may be interested in a very unique opportunity to view the Toronto skyline from the newest rescue boat on the water.

This year, our team will be on patrol from May 25 to October 5. Wednesday nights will be from 6-9 pm and we will be out one day on most weekends, from noon to 6 pm. Our main area of coverage is the eastern gap to east of Bluffers park, although we may be in other areas as required.

The fundraising boat rides will be on Tuesday or Thursday evenings from 7-8:30 pm. We would be happy to meet folks at their power or sail club if they have five guests confirmed for the boat ride. Alternate evenings than those listed are available on a best efforts basis.

Lastly, we will be looking to expand our team for 2017 so please have interested parties email Petr, our unit leader, at Petr.Jano@t-sar.com.

Sincerely,
