Spring! Some days it feels like it is, some days not. Have no fear. It won't be long until we are complaining it's too hot! I look forward to those days, good for the beverage service at the club. Speaking of which, the new wine menu is complete. It's been costed and ready to go to print. Thank you David Coutier and team for all of your work in putting this together.

What's new about this menu is we are going to a 6 and 9 ounce pour instead of the 5 ounces and half litres. As well, we will have a wine by the bottle selection known as the Commodore's list (so if you don't like it you know who to blame!) with a different price structure. We will be charging our cost (which is slightly higher than you pay at the LCBO) plus $14.00. This list is available by the bottle only and will change on a regular basis. As you may have noticed, we have changed the wine glasses to accommodate the new list. Please be gentle with them.

Wine is not the only change; a couple of the taps have been or will be changed. The first one is Henderson, a local craft brewery, and we have installed the tap at the front of the bar. Henderson comes to us by way of Martin Gibb who has secured Henderson as one of the major sponsors for our Open Regatta. Their initial offering of "Best" has been well received by our suds loving members. Thanks Martin! Karen is looking into a second local brewery for our next open tap.

In an attempt to make the patio a brighter place to be, we have begun by cleaning it up and painting the gazebo a slightly different colour than the clubhouse and this has drawn mostly positive comments. We will be refinishing the big table tops in the next two weeks and look forward to a 'grand opening' during the Open Regatta after the holiday weekend. One member has started referring to it as the chippy shack, might be something to that!

The WIFI has been completed. I was getting excellent reception at the far end of Green dock over the weekend. As I have mentioned earlier, due to many technical reasons, we will not be able to do a lot of streaming but email and browsing should be much more reliable.

Over launch weekend, which is a very demanding time for food and beverage, we had a couple of problems with tabs. In the staff's efforts to serve members as quickly as possible, a few members were charged incorrectly and this was not noticed by the affected members until the statements went out. I ask that you start opening your tab with your membership card and sign off on it at the end of the day. We will have new staff in the next couple of weeks and using your card makes it easier for them to make sure the right items get on the correct members' tabs. Lidia will thank you!

That's my rant for the week, see ya at the club!

Move Your Dinghies
Spring is here and the grass is starting to grow at Bay Belle Point. The dinghy storage area has been
cleared of all winter cradles.

All of the dinghies need to be moved to the dinghy area. Please move your own and a couple of others.
Also mark all equipment with name and member number for identification.

AHOY 'New & Nearly New' Boat Owners!
Did you join the club or get a new boat in the last year or perhaps you missed out on ABYC's 2015 New Boat Owners' Party?  All new-to-the-club boat owners are invited to sign up to be host boats in the ABYC New Boat Owners' Party on Sail Past Weekend:

Sunday, June 5, 2016
2:00 pm to 5:00 pm

This is a fun-filled, time-honoured tradition at our club!

How does it work?

As a registered host, you can simply invite members onto your boat for a tour and refreshments and/or you may want to do something more elaborate involving decorations, costumes, themes and games.  It doesn't matter whether you offer chips, dip and pop or host a full-scale luau. The point of this event is to have a lot of fun and get to know more ABYC members.

Prizes (gift certificates from the Rigging Shoppe) will be awarded for the Best-Dressed Crew, Best Decorations, Best-Dressed/Decorated Family Boat, Best Cocktail, and Best Snack. Depending on the number and location of boats that participate, we will stagger hosting times. For example, boats on:

Red Dock - 2 to 3 pm
Blue Dock - 3 to 4 pm
Green Dock - 4 to 5 pm

We will keep you posted once we know who is registered. If you have any questions, just send us an email. Entertainment Committee members will reach out to you via email to provide details and confirm your interest.

Please let us know if we can sign you up!

Happy Sails!

Crew Bank Night Report
Racing Crew Bank Night was a huge success with over 2 dozen prospective new crew members signing up and about a dozen skippers in attendance looking for crew. I'm certain that through the evening some matches were made and other very involved discussions took place.

Of course it all comes down to who shows up on May 17 and May 19 - first races for Series A and B.
For folks still looking for a boat, please remember to arrive between 5:15 PM and 5:45 pm to ensure there is adequate time to place you on a boat. And dress warm, the lake is still very, very cold!

Big Thanks to Nancy and Amanda for doing the Registration and to Bob Wilson for the welcoming address.

Mark Laying Course:  May 14-15 at ABYC
While we use fixed marks for our Tuesday and Thursday night races at ABYC, most other races use inflatable marks placed as needed depending on the wind, course configuration, boat sizes, etc. This year, we have three regattas at ABYC, and all of them will be using inflatable marks.

Getting these marks in the right place, signalling changes, and handling the unexpected takes an understanding of the applicable rules and objectives, skill with a GPS, compass, and Mr. String, and, of course, practice.

This course is conducted by Ontario Sailing, and will combine classroom theory, and on-the-water practice at setting marks. You can register at: Ontario Sailing.

Please note that mark setting requires moderate physical strength and agility ... anchors are set and retrieved by hand, and mark boats are typically 18-21 feet long without creature comforts. In other words, it's good exercise!

Mark boats are also VERY close to the action on a race, at the pin end of the start line, or taking roundings at a gate or upwind mark. You get a great close-up view of our sport.

ABYC members who attend the full course and contribute to mark setting for ABYC this year will have the registration fee reimbursed by the club.

If you have any questions, please contact me ... I've taken the course and will be assisting with instruction this weekend.

Work Party - Last Minute Jobs
Well folks, we need to have more members show up to the next two work parties (May 14, May 21). I am thinking about how to drum up our level of interest in work parties (zzzzzzz, I hear you thinking).

How about we have a club contest to rename work parties to something else!  Say maybe along the lines of Worky McWorkparty Face - in fine British Marine tradition (if you are lost, google Boaty Mcboat Face). The winning entry (selected by our very own VC Marine) will get a chance to run the work parties for a week. Just think! You too can experience the wonderful sense of accomplishment gained by trying to organize what is essentially chaos.

While I wait for the entries to roll in, we do have lots of jobs remaining, the most urgent being those for the white wall completion:
  • Finish welding cap to the wall @ green dock junction (land side only).
  • Complete electrical re-installation (conduit & wiring).
  • Complete water supply re-installation (faucets and tubing).
  • Install metal checker-plate @ finger dock and wall.
  • One section of boardwalk has to be removed and replaced to access WW electrical but other sections need to be re-aligned. LOTS of hands needed to lift the section and replace.
  • Electrical cable supports @ Green Dock and Green Dock Floating are still incomplete (still supported by ropes (will not pass inspection).
  • Green Dock Floating lower ramp needs to be re-installed and roller platform and slides corrected (see Allen Lewis).
  • Attach numbers to white wall.
  • Attach cleats to dinghy docks.
  • Fabricate fender boards for raft on white wall.
  • Distribute soil around the yard, and general clean up.
  • Green Dock Patio awnings and general clean-up, tables and BBQs, etc.
Next Saturday, May 21 (yes, the long weekend, no eye rolling!), we need a LARGE number of people (or a number of large people LOL) to help backfill the white wall with concrete. It will be pumped in, but we need people to help tamp it down.

ABYC Gardens

Well, spring has sprung and so the gardens and grounds have started to come alive. It is still too cold to be planting the annual colours, but hopefully around the long weekend we will have warmer temperatures.

There are two heaps of top soil that have been delivered. One is by the junior sailing school and the other at the Belle Bay Point. We need to distribute this soil among all of the garden beds in the Club grounds. It is pretty obvious where it is needed, certainly around the abused junior sailing school gardens and the Belle Bay point. Also we will be getting some new planters to replace the eroded wooden barrels. Some of the new soil can be added there as well.

It looks like we have some reliable help with the bosuns so hopefully we can get the gardens well watered throughout the season, but PLEASE, if you see something in need of weeding or watering, go ahead! It is OUR Club and needs lots of TLC. Thanks in advance and have a wonderful sailing season.

Chili Cookoff Cruise to Southwall Report

Chili Mayhem Reigns over the South Wall

This past Saturday over 100 ABYCers (and many dogs) survived threatening weather and a lack of power to bring together 20 contenders for the annual ABYC Chili Cook-Off.

We want to thank all the participants who dared to compete and the members who cruised ALL the way across the harbour (23 boats made the trip) to taste, socialize, and pass judgement on our incredible team of Chili Chefs. It was great to see some of our new members join in the festivities too!

Special thanks to Harold for providing the music, Colleen and Gerald for graciously allowing Short Bus to be THE BOAT for the group picture, Terry and Katherine for providing ballots and tallying abilities, and Roger for the pics.

Special thanks to Alan Colter and his team for once again organizing and leading the kids activities (and for the awesome tent). Extra special thanks goes to the shore crew for helping set up and tear down (and bringing the Fitz for our emergency power needs). Finally a big shout out to our event sponsor, Chair-man Mills, for donating the rentals again this year (no dirty dishes to clean), and to Mike MacDonald for the prizes!

The final results were:

Bronze: Colin Andrews
Silver: Paul Leftneski
Gold (and new champion): Shawn Ballman

Well done everyone, and  keep on cruisin'... the summer is young and the winds are a blowin'!

Cruising Captains Note: This year's Southwall Cruise or Kate & Cam's Chili Cook-off, was another great start to the cruising season and this year we had the added benefit of special Kids-Zone with the help of Alan & Karen / Gerald & Colleen who organized events for the kids. And BIG thanks to Kate & Cam as this was their last time to host the Chili-fest (for now?). They are leaving large 'bowls' to fill.

ABYC Learn-to-Sail Open House Report
By six o'clock on May 3, the mobs had already shown up! They were there to find out about all of the various ways they could learn to sail at ABYC. By the end of the evening, the Adult Basic Keelboat Cruising course had 50 registered students. This is already an all-time record and classes had not even begun. The Co-op program and Introductory Co-op program (specifically for graduates of the Keelboat course) were at capacity, although applications are still being accepted. The Junior Sailing School also saw lots of activity.

We would like to thank all of the people who helped make the open house such a success. Our ABYC Keelboat instructors, Emily Sawolak and her amazing co-op members (who somehow managed to get boats ready for showing within two days of launch!), Bob Wilson and his team who interviewed all our new Introductory Associate Members, Celia Lum and her marketing committee (and the guy with the sandwich-board up on Lakeshore), Jeff DeJean and his enthusiastic Junior Sailing School instructors, Grant Dietrich representing the Adult Dinghy School, John Chittley for the crew-bank, and Linda DeRusha with her fine regalia.

A special thanks to Roxanne, without whom we could not do any of this.

Finally, thanks to all of you! Once again, people mainly learned of our programs and the open house through our website and from member referrals. Keep them coming!!!

Learn-to Sail News: This is a first year for the club in a few big ways.
  • With the closing of the Humber College Sailing School, our long-time educational partner, ABYC has applied and been approved by Transport Canada to become a Registered Boating School (RBS). Three former Humber instructors, who have taught at AB in the past, have been hired to teach our program.
  • Thanks to member approval for the purchase of a C&C 29 and the generous donation of a third C&C 25, ABYC has expanded its co-op fleet to four boats.
  • The new one-day, on the water, Introduction to Racing course is at capacity with 8 students. The course is designed to familiarize new racers with fundamentals of racing including basic rules, the ABYC race course, the start line, and roles of crew on-board. Peter Woodall and David Cloutier, aboard Tricanna and Feelin' Good, will teach this course.
  • We are offering a Youth program from July 4-8 for young sailors 13-18 years old, with or without experience, aboard a really cool 7.5m Flying Tiger. There are still a few spaces available.
  • We are offering an Intermediate keelboat live-aboard cruising course, on Lake Ontario with an option for one in BC, and there are a few spaces still available.

Race Committee 2016

OK, it's time to get down to business. Our first major event of the season is our own ABYC Open Challenge Regatta, May 28 & 29.  I need a full crew for this one - committee boat personnel, as well as two mark layer/drivers and two helpers for the mark boats. As always, I would like to know well in advance of the event that I have the necessary people to make it work. If you are interested in helping, please get in touch with me ASAP. Last minute scrambling is never a good thing and I would like to avoid it as much as possible. Let me hear from you folks - operators are standing by...

On to another matter. I would like to give a huge shout out to Wendy Moseley, a stalwart of the Thursday night RC crew. Wendy has been commuting in from Guelph every week for-EVER, close to 25 years she tells me. Sadly for us, the commute is now proving to be too much and she has decided to hand over her stopwatch and call it a day. Thank you, Wendy, for your hard work, dedication and companionship on the water; you will be missed.  Bravo Zulu.

2016 ABYC Open Challenge Regatta

In case you're wondering, this 2016 ABYC OPEN CHALLENGE! REGATTA column is all about our Sponsors. Along with a number of long-term VIC (Very Important Company) supporters, we have some GREAT new sponsors for the OPEN as well! As you can see from our OPEN Regatta banner above, a number of key industry companies have stepped up to partner with us and grow the ABYC OPEN. I believe ABYC will reap big benefits working with our great sponsors, and I hope you will join me and the rest of our regatta team in thanking and welcoming these exciting partnerships. This should be fun!

The exciting news? EVOLUTION SAILMAKERS have agreed to become Title Sponsor for the OPEN this year. In addition to working to jointly promote our regatta around the lake as the overall Title sponsor, Evolution Sailmakers is the company behind the OPEN's big new SAIL PRIZE DRAW. This very generous $4000 dollar Sail Prize will run the next three years, and serve to attract and grow race registration and our club regatta. That's BIG!

We have already introduced Great Lakes Offshore Services and Henderson Brewing Co. who have stepped up as Presenting Sponsors to support ABYC. Being able to walk around our new seawall is a nice feeling courtesy of Great Lakes Offshore Services, and we think brewing up a brand new CHALLENGE! event beer by way of Henderson Brewing is a great way to end a day of sailing and racing at the club. Is that a great new partnership or what? (The answer is yes.)

So we all know sail fashion is important, and that brings us to our hat company sponsor. Doesn't every racer want a little Red Cap? That used to be a beer but we clearly have beer covered at the OPEN so it must be something else? BREAKING NEWS folks! This MOUNT Gay company ALSO apparently makes a 'beverage' that is gaining in popularity among the sailing community, and I have heard it will be available at the OPEN. Well, in terms of hospitality, it would be a 'Rum' deal if we couldn't offer something other than beer to thirsty sailors. So choice it is for all you salty dogs.

Maybe your boat's a little banged up from all those folks who don't understand when you're shouting "ROOM!" A couple of nicks, dents, maybe the odd keel falls off, but not to worry! Our long time perennial stalwart, always faithful ABYC sponsor BRISTOL MARINE says they can "Get You Back On The Water," with their long history of repair expertise.

We also have long-term ABYC sponsors that, year after year, sometimes above the radar sometimes below, go along and simply support our sailing fun, much of the time with trophies, flags, and slick prizes that we all love to go home with. Fogh Marine, North Sails, UK Sailmakers, and Swans Marina are this year's Prize sponsors and we express our appreciation and thanks.

All fun aside, we need to recognise the importance and value these supportive companies bring to our club and our sailing fun. Let's do that this year and make them feel welcome. Register to race folks. This will be fun.

Lakeshore Yacht Club Cruises
Saturday May 21 - Monday May 23

It's the first long weekend of the season and the first ABYC cruise of more than 1 nm of the season too!

The Cruising Fleet is off to Lakeshore Yacht Club for a reciprocal cruise for the Victoria Day long weekend; three days and two nights.

Lakeshore Yacht Club is a self-help club and enjoys excellent member-built facilities with floating docks, common use kitchen and dining facilities, and is located in the Colonel Samuel Smith Park in Etobicoke.

As is customary, ABYC will host a member gathering including dinner on Saturday with the participants asked to help out with contributions of appetizers or desserts, plus your own beverages. Rumour has it we're getting all jazzed up, New Orleans style!

Colonel Samuel Smith Park is located along a stretch of wooded shoreline in the Kipling and Lakeshore area and is home to a network of paths for walking, roller blading and biking. The park also features a dog off-leash area and there is a children's play area by the club house. Lots to do for a long weekend! The park is also home to a number of geo-caches! We're planning a friendly geo-caching outing (with prizes) on Sunday, so bring your handheld GPS or smart phones. No experience necessary, we'll teach you all you need to know!

LSYC has no in-house F&B so it is bring-your-own for all other meals. The communal clubhouse kitchen and BBQ areas are available for our use, as long as we leave them as we found them!  And while the outdoor BBQ patio is scenic and welcoming, and we hope to spend some quality time there, LSYC has the added benefit of indoor eating space should the weather not cooperate. Anyone wishing to support the local businesses, Lake Shore Blvd. W. is not far away with a few small restaurants and a RABBA Fine Foods.

Reservations for the LSYC cruise are now open. Note: this is a two night reciprocal cruise on roughly a boat for boat exchange basis. Should you wish to return to ABYC on Sunday please expect your slip to be occupied by a LSYC guest who will not be asked to move until Monday at noon.

Looking forward to welcoming you!

Your LSYC cruise hosts,

Carolyn & Ralph Weckesser, Latis
Joyce Guest & Jamie Donaldson, Aleta Azul

Using the Rules to Your Advantage: Rules You Need to Know to Win

Wendy Loat, Canadian National Judge, will cover the rules many sailors get wrong, and will talk about what to do if you either protest or have been protested, including strategies to win when a protest goes to hearing.

We will keep the evening light but informative. If you own a rule book, please bring it. If you don't, you'd better not miss this talk (download the rules to your tablet or phone via this link). You can also purchase the book for $10 here.

This is our last Toonie Thursday for the 2015-2016 season. Whether you are a seasoned racer or new to racing, this will be an informative and educational evening with one of Canada's top National Judges.
