Launch Report
Another Launch Come and Gone

The weather cooperated, although cool. Aren't we glad that we were not working on Sunday?!

Aside from a late start as the large crane was not ready (it was unavailable the night before to setup), and a slow launch pace at the beginning of the day, all boats were safely in the water by 1900.

You would have noted some procedural changes as we continue to improve the process and enhance safety:
  • A marked zone in the crane area designating the entire area as a hardhat zone, and that only people with roles to play should be there.
  • The creation of a look-out on the BayBelle point, with VHF radios available, to communicate with any boats having issues coming from Coatsworth Cut and the Drysail area.
  • More structured Safety Committee presence (and I have seen the beginnings of their notes, all good stuff).
I am writing this as Crane Chair, and have received congratulations on the day's success. Thanks, but the accolades are really due to ALL who contributed and the various teams that make the process work.  Boat Riders, Dock (Ladies, Team,Crew?), Large Crane and Small Crane teams, Cradle Dismantling team, Coffee and Donuts, Safety team, Bernie doing a lot ahead of the day to get things laid out, and the list goes on.

And oh, yes, I was asked yesterday whether we had fixed a haulout date. I ignored that.

Thanks all, and have a great summer.

Roy Little
Thank You Boat Riders and Spotters
Dear Launch Boat Riders and Spotters for Bay Belle Point

Thank you so much for an excellent job.  You all and Tim Hill Contact Small Crane area continue to exceed yourselves with dedication and safety during your assigned duties.
Our red hardhats were a success for safety.

As you know, having Spotters for Bay Belle Point is a new project; watching boats from Coatsworth Cut to the open water to your assigned dock in the harbour without your engine dying (similar to MOB drill and hope this never happens). We plan to continue for the next haulout and launch ...  This project works with a handheld radio, VHF radio (Channel 71), and whistle or loud screaming for attention. I would suggest all skippers wear their PFD for future haulout and launch.

I'll reiterate - the weather was very nice but, if the weather is bad, the Coatsworth Cut can be challenging. Our greatest value would likely be if someone goes in the water we would see it and hopefully we could get a rescue tow boat there quickly.

Thank you to all.  Have a safe and fun sailing season.

Thank You Rail Yard Crews
Thanks to the Rail Yard Crews for Launch 2016

We have had another hard working and successful launch weekend and I would like to extend some thanks to all involved in the rail yard. This includes the tallow crew who kept things slippery, the cradle crew who did the heavy lifting, the winch operators who kept boats moving, and the folks who repaired ways and cradles as needed throughout the days.

To the rail communications team that precisely positioned the rail car. To the boat handlers at the mast crane, dock ladies and tow boat crews, many thanks. To the rope pullers one and all, thank you for your tireless efforts, patience, and camaraderie. To the rope pulling commanders, I hope your voices return quickly.

To the many people who had a kind and encouraging word of support throughout the weekend many, many thanks. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Thanks,
Bruce Morrison
Thank You Dock Crew
A Launch Thank you!

Please join me in sharing a big helping of gratitude to the members who worked diligently as part of the Dock Crew Launch 2016 Team!  Members of our team were on duty at the first launch and were still on the docks when the very last boat was tied up!

Our team is responsible for liaising with crane and railyard foremen, the tow boats and boat riders, making PA announcements, and assisting the owners to secure their boat at the docks. This year's operations were made a little more challenging by an added number of temporary docking locations during the white wall harbour repairs and we thank all members for their cooperation and understanding.

This year we were so lucky to have such great weather!  Such a great way to introduce a handful of new recruits to our team!

Thank You Regalia Sales Team
A big thank you to the regalia sales team for their help during launch. We showcased a few new items along with the items that have become favorites with members. Thanks to Diane Schulman, Liz Heron, Lyn DeSouza, Penny McDonald and Ofra Gershman for the work they did to set up and display our merchandise and for their great salesmanship on Saturday.

Regalia is always available through the office or by contacting me.  You can see some of our regalia on display in the club foyer or on the website.  We will also be selling regalia at the upcoming Learn to Sail Open House and Crew Bank Night.

Thank You Ladies in White
For the Ladies in White

Please join me in thanking our tireless Ladies in White for their efforts after a very long, long launch.  My thanks to Susan Hogan, Trixie Hoyer, Eleanor MacKay, and Pat Chittley. Another great effort from the Tallow team.

Now let's get sailing!

ABYC's First Associate Life Member: Molly Asseltine
In January of this year, the membership passed a by-law amendment creating the member classification "Associate Life/Associate Dinghy". This allowed us to recognize outstanding contribution by these members, who are not required to contribute at all!

The Life Member's committee, organized by our Senior Vice Commodore, selected Molly Asseltine as the nominee for 2016, and at our April AGM last week, the membership voted to confirm the nomination.

Molly led the crew bank for five years, and has coordinated and recruited (press-ganged?) race committee for eight years.

She has also been a fixture on and core contributor to our Race Committee for close to 15 years, and is the ONLY 'Diamond' contributor to the ABYC race committee for the two years we've acknowledged this level of contribution, with 173 and 157 hours in 2014 and 2015 (and this did not include the time recruiting and organizing).

Heartfelt congratulations on this well deserved recognition, Molly!

Work Party - Last Minute Jobs
Now that we have launch out of the way, we can go back to our regularly scheduled work party program! LOL

This Saturday, we have quite a few jobs left to do on the white wall and yard which include:
  • Complete decking and fender boards
  • Prepare for concrete pouring (May 16)
  • General yard clean up
  • Level the ground where heavy equipment was used
  • Spread top soil
  • Planting
  • Casa Ballman railyard
  • Put up tent at Bay Belle
I have a full list of jobs needing to be done, so please help us out if you can. The ABYC Regatta is happening at the end of May! What else do you have to do Saturday morning after launch?

Chili Cookoff Cruise to Southwall
This Saturday, May 7 at 2pm, there is the Southwall Cruise Chili Cookoff starting at 2pm.

Basically, members take their boats over to the South wall (wall on the park side at the end of Green dock) and we have a get together to celebrate the start of our Cruising season. The feature event is the Chili cookoff competition!

This year we are hoping to make the event a lot more kid friendly. We will be organizing lots of activities....sack races, egg and spoon races, tug o' war, etc. Also, there will be face painting, tattoos (not real, really!) some arts and crafts for little ones...

To feed our little monsters, we are asking you to bring a pot luck dish, basically something your kid eats but bring a bit extra and we will set up a table with the kids food and drink.

If you cannot bring your boat, just walk over or hitch a ride. No need to confirm with us, just show up with the kids.

Hosted by Cam and Kate, this event is famous for the Chili cook off!

2016 ABYC Open Challenge Regatta

HAPPY NEW YEAR ABYC RACERS!

Boats in the water, sticks up, sails on, and we are all good to go. Right? Okay, I know we are just four days out from launch and some of you may be still recovering from the party, but time's awastin' as they say. Let's make some haste and get those boats prepped because our club's annual premier race regatta at the end of the month (May 28/29) is calling you to register, race, and party.

With the 2016 ABYC OPEN CHALLENGE! REGATTA upon us that soon (yes that soon!), I want to focus this week on two main items about the regatta and hope you will agree with both. The first is the sponsors that have stepped forward and have provided our club and all of our members with both financial and product/service support for this event.

Alongside our two Presenting Sponsors GREAT LAKES OFFSHORE SERVICES, and HENDERSON BREWING CO., our 2016 Regatta team wishes to thank each of our Supporting Sponsors equally. Our latest Supporting Sponsor addition is a little known company called MOUNT GAY. Apparently they make hats and will be providing some for the event so that's fantastic.

The other important item to discuss over the next few weeks is the number of club racers that participate in our weeknight racing. Here's a thought: If you race weeknights and support our very successful weeknight program, think about extending your support for our May Regatta. If you need reasons to race that weekend, read on.

The 2016 ABYC OPEN CHALLENGE! REGATTA has been reformulated FOR YOU, with more PHRF involvement, including NFS white sail categories, and being able to race for a single day only if that's your preference. BUT, there is another big reason for ABYC weeknight club racers to participate this year and it involves a little bit of competition and possibly a lot of club pride.

The PHRF Racers Association has created the new 'Inter-Club' PHRF Team Competition between all LORC clubs this summer and it starts at our club's May OPEN. Those team details are on our website. However, our own ABYC Commodore has thrown down the gauntlet to our neighbours at Queen City Yacht Club, with a rival challenge within that PHRF Team Competition. And Queen City has responded! Apparently, they are sending a formidable team of boats to our Regatta to challenge ABYC on our own course! As PopEye would say, "Of All Da Noive!"

As Chair of this year's OPEN Regatta, I and our entire team are asking you as an ABYC weeknight club racer to strongly consider participating in May. Do it for yourself and have some fun. And do it for our club so that we might display our 'finely honed professional sailing and racing skills' to other clubs on the lake, specifically to our neighbouring QCYC sailors who might best be described as 'having potential'. I hear there may be a trophy involved so it's not too early to stock up on spinach.

To all ABYC members: Plan a different start this year, focus on getting your boat ready to go, and let's all join our own ABYC party. Go to the ABYC website and get the details, then click the LORC link to register for the OPEN. You'll be glad you did.

Using the Rules to Your Advantage: Rules You Need to Know to Win

Wendy Loat, Canadian National Judge, will cover the rules many sailors get wrong, and will talk about what to do if you either protest or have been protested, including strategies to win when a protest goes to hearing.

We will keep the evening light but informative. If you own a rule book, please bring it. If you don't, you'd better not miss this talk (download the rules to your tablet or phone via this link). You can also purchase the book for $10 here.

This is our last Toonie Thursday for the 2015-2016 season. Whether you are a seasoned racer or new to racing, this will be an informative and educational evening with one of Canada's top National Judges.
