PARKING CONSTRAINTS
From a planning perspective, the large crane will be delivered on Friday afternoon, April 29, for setup. For this they need free access down the access roadway to the Blue Wall/White Wall junction.

All cars must be removed by 2 PM to accommodate this please.

First boats in (roughly!) with two cranes and the hydraulic trailer at work. This is not the exact order but all are likely to be thrown in between 8:00 AM and 8:45 AM.

Please be down and ready to launch ahead of that. Thanks.

KEEL MARKING
Over the weekend the keel markings were painted on in a nice bright green to distinguish from the yellow marks of yesteryear.  Please do not paint over the top of them as you apply your anti-fouling.

SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS
Anyone requiring special planning re launch (ie boat sold, leaving club, not ready to launch on April 30), please advise Roy ASAP so that the appropriate arrangements can be made.

DRYSAIL AREA
Reminder, though I know that it is in the works.  Thanks.

All trailered boats parked in the drysail area and also in the vicinity of the cradle storage area (behind the railyard donkey engine) need to be moved please prior to April 30 to allow free crane access and cradle storage access.

Thanks,
Roy Little

Senior Lifetime Member - Peter Brooks

At the AGM this week, Peter Brooks was honoured as this year's senior lifetime member.

Peter was recognized for his 45 years of daily service to the club, winter and summer, making sure everything is in running order.

Thank you,
Gary Oliver
Sea Wall Report
WOW! What a Work Party Day!!

Last Saturday about 50 Club Members worked fantastically to transform the jagged and rough new seawall (white wall) to a finished and safe state almost ready for boats to dock. From bare steel to welded cap, some Vdocks back in place and the 6 X 6 Bumper rail secured as the docks went on and the Green Dock Entrance Ramp rebuilt was well beyond expectations.

We should also acknowledge the work of our senior mid-week work crews who magically make improvements to the docks, seawalls, and boardwalks when the rest of us are otherwise occupied.

Many thanks to all participants,

Roger Marsh

Toonie Thursday, May 12 - Wendy Loat

Using the Rules to Your Advantage: Rules You Need to Know to Win

Wendy Loat, Canadian National Judge, will cover the rules many sailors get wrong, and will talk about what to do if you either protest or have been protested, including strategies to win when a protest goes to hearing.

We will keep the evening light but informative. If you own a rule book, please bring it. If you don't, you'd better not miss this talk (download the rules to your tablet or phone via this link). You can also purchase the book for $10 here.

This is our last Toonie Thursday for the 2015-2016 season. Whether you are a seasoned racer or new to racing, this will be an informative and educational evening with one of Canada's top National Judges.

Work Party - Last Minute Jobs
It's a race against time!  If anyone is available to come down to the club this week, there are work parties scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday in a final attempt to get as much done on the white wall as possible before launch.

Our next Saturday work party will be May 7 from 9 AM - 12 PM to continue with post launch activities and clean up. You know you need something to look forward to after your boat is in the water! LOL  No worries, there is still a lot to do :)

See everyone Saturday at launch!

Notice of Passing - Betty Mathews
It is with great sadness that I must mention that my mother, Betty Lynne Matthews, passed away this past Saturday evening. She died peacefully in her sleep at the Toronto East General Hospital's palliative care ward.

Betty and her husband Bob were members of ABYC from about 1960 to 1998. As such, Betty contributed greatly to the club's social life and was an active member of the women's group, The Slip Knots. Our house was often the site of some of the club's best parties and my mom just loved playing hostess. And it was always a challenge to walk by our boat on the dock without being invited on board for a drink and a chat. She and her sister Joan Ferguson (also an ABYC member and boat owner for many years) were the star crew of our C&C 25, Sea Key. With my dad at the helm, they were highly successful and won countless trophies and flags over the years.

My mom saw everyone at the club as her friend and it was definitely difficult for her when dad passed away and she had greater difficulty getting down to the club. But I was still able to get her out on the water at Highland Yacht Club where I now have a boat.

Mom loved sailing and she loved ABYC. To all of her friends there, I would like you to know that you all played a part in her love of sailing and being a club member.

There will be a funeral service for Betty on Tuesday, May 3 at 11:00 AM at Guildwood Presbyterian Church, 140 Guildwood Parkway, Scarborough. Guests can bring a donation to the Food Bank in lieu of flowers.

Sarah Douglas Sailing Update
Sarah Douglas is Sailing Really Fast Right Now

ABYC Corinthian Athlete Sarah Douglas joined the National Sailing Team just last year, and her hard work is paying off. From April 12-20, Sarah was racing in the Laser Radial Words in Puerto Vallarta Mexico where she finished 21st in the 76 boat fleet. This is an incredible result, especially as it was Sarah's first world championship in the Laser Radial Class and, in addition, she was the 2nd Canadian (of six national team athletes)  in the event. In late March, Sarah was racing in Mallorca, Spain at the Princess Sophia Regatta, and in February she was the top female and 3rd overall at the Laser Midwinters East in Clearwater Florida.

Congratulations to Sarah on here outstanding success this spring. Sailing at such a high level takes tremendous commitment.

Cruises
June Cruises
June cruise registration opens Wednesday May 4 at midnight. Register on line at http://abyc.on.ca/.
If you have missed the instructions on how to register, please check out the last two issues of the S2S or email [email protected] for instructions. Tutorial instructions are posted in the clubhouse.

New Members Cruise to Frenchman's Bay Yacht Club - June 11, 12
Hosts: Chris & Sue Hannah (Lion's Den)
This cruise is intended to introduce new members to the ABYC Cruising Program and other ABYC cruising members. We would like to see a good mix of new members and 'not so new' members register for this cruise.

The Boulevard Club - June 18, 19
Hosts:  Cruising Captains
The Boulevard Club has a small yachting fleet and they do not have the dock space to accommodate more boats than the number of boats that they have registered for this reciprocal cruise so this is a 'boat for boat' exchange'.  Space is limited. A short 'wait list' will be accepted and then registration will be closed. Only boats that plan to stay overnight can be accommodated. This cruise will not have a reception.

Registration is still open for May cruises

Cruise to Southwall - May 7
Plan on joining us on the southwall. No registration for this season opener. This event will be held 'rain or shine'.

Lakeshore Yacht Club - May 21, 22, 23
A 'wait list' has been started. We should know about 2 weeks before the cruise if the boat limit will be increased (and we are hoping it will be). Register to attend the first cruise of the season that is greater than 1nm.

Etobicoke Yacht Club - May 28, 29
If you are not a 'racer' this will be a good weekend to enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow cruisers at EYC. Dock space is needed for the incoming racers.

Cruise Cancellation
Registrants must remove themselves from the cruise as soon as they know that they will no longer be able to attend the cruise. Failure to provide advance notification of cancellation is inconvenient and disruptive to fellow members, hosts, and ABYC Bosun staff:
  • Registrants wishing to cancel their attendance at a cruise must provide e-mail notification to the Cruising Captains ([email protected]) and the hosts.
  • Registrants on the 'wait list' are required to cancel their registration (same as above) when they no longer plan to attend the cruise should a vacancy become available on the participant list.
Cancellation Penalty
  • A $25.00 penalty may be payable by a member if they cancel their attendance within 48 hours of the scheduled cruise or do not attend the cruise. The decision to charge the penalty is at the discretion of the Cruising Captains. Consideration will be given to bad weather and other extenuating circumstances.
How to Make Changes to Registration Information
After the initial registration has been submitted it may be necessary to make a change or an addition such as:
  • Updating the number of adults and children that will be attending (attendee numbers are necessary for the hosts are to plan the reception).
  • Special slip accommodation needs (e.g., preferred side of boat for dock tie-up / proximity to land).
Changes/corrections/additions/deletions must be sent by e-mail to the Cruising Captain ([email protected]) and the hosts.

NOTE: Host e-mail information is included in the cruise description on the 'Cruising Signup' page.

Harbourmaster's Hat

"This trophy will be awarded to the first keelboat to enter the (chosen harbour) after departing ABYC no earlier than 1:00 PM on the Saturday of the weekend following launch. The boat must be fully rigged and must be sailed the full distance to the selected harbour and skippered by the boat owner. The selected harbour is chosen and posted on the club notice board by the harbourmaster each year at least four weeks prior to the official launch date. Failing this, the selected harbour will remain the same as the previous year(s). This trophy is not to be removed from club premises without special permission."
(2016 Events Book)

As the ABYC 2016 Harbourmaster, I have identified the selected harbour destination to be Mimico Cruising Club (MCC).

Upon arrival, please register (name, date, and time of entry into the harbour) in the MCC guest book located in the lower hallway of the clubhouse.

Upon returning to ABYC, please notify me by email that you have competed for the Harbourmaster's Hat by completing the sail to MCC. Please provide the date and time entered in the guest book.
