Important Launch Readying Information
Drysail Area
All trailered boats parked in the drysail area and also in the vicinity of the cradle storage area (behind the railyard donkey engine) need to be moved please prior to the 30th of April so as to allow free crane access and cradle storage access.

Launch Sequence
First boats in (roughly!): (with two cranes and the hydraulic trailer at work, this is not the exact order, but all are likely to be thrown in between 0800 and 0845).

Please be down and ready to launch ahead of that. Thanks:

Don Sturgeon, Jaltica
Fred Braches, Double Dutch
Juris Altraks, Laime II
Wolfgang Stumpf, Quantum Leap
Jim Prall, Blue Buccaneer
Kevin Forward, Kitchen Party
Paul Lefneski, Chillin
Victor Shultheiss, Jolly Rog
Simon Cooper, Aquatopia
Brian Cunningham, Crazy
Yves Lemieux, Killick 3
Karlo Gliha, Kairos
And then the five boats along BayBelle point (Fortitude to Consort)

Keel Marking
This week, Friday, the keel markings will be painted on, weather permitting. Please do not paint over the top of them as you apply your anti-fouling.

Parking Constraints
From a planning perspective, the large crane may be delivered on Friday the 29th, late afternoon, for setup. For this they need free access down the access roadway to the Blue Wall / White Wall junction. All cars, please, must be removed ahead of this.

Special Arrangements
And finally, anyone requiring special planning re launch (ie boat sold, leaving club, not ready to launch on the 30th, please advise me ASAP so that the appropriate arrangements can be made.

Thanks,
Roy Little
Casino Royale - A Night To Remember

It was a 'full house' last Saturday evening as members and guests came out in record numbers to dine, dance, and try their luck at Casino Royale. A picture truly is worth a thousand words, so click through to take a look at the highlights captured through Donna Miller's photographs.

Thanks to Bob Wilson and Somerville Auto - guests were delighted to see a sleek Aston Martin convertible parked by the red carpet, and it is featured in many of the photos. Best prop ever! Many guests arrived in tuxedos, gowns, and themed costumes, with the 'Best Dressed Award' going to Octopussy (Kathleen Walker). Thanks to Senior Vice-Commodore Brian Meret for donating a bottle of Crystal Head Vodka for the prize.

Many thanks to Kings Promotion for providing the casino rentals and the excellent dealers that engaged the crowd and kept tables running smoothly. The Casino's top two winners were Paul Bark and Jonathan Walker, who took home gift certificates for the Rigging Shoppe of $100 and $50.

An event of this magnitude requires the collaboration of many skills, talents, and people and many, many hours of work. Thank you to Chef Jann, Katie Haynes and the rest of the Food & Beverage staff for setting-up, preparing, and serving an exotic dinner and keeping the drinks flowing all night. Special thanks to Chef Jann and his team for their phenomenal efforts to produce excellent cuisine that illustrated their mastery of culinary arts. Remember what our chef can do if you ever want to host an event at ABYC!

Diners enjoyed the dulcet tones of Melissa Azore, accompanied by pianist Philippe Escayola. Thank you to Ryan Lippert for audio and tech setup and management for the duo. Forever Sounds DJ Services took the party to a whole new level and immediately had everyone up dancing. Many thanks for the great music and visual effects! Speaking of visual effects, special thanks to Bruce Carr for creating the dramatic posters and James Bond silhouettes. We would also like to thank Debbie Dockray and Don Sturgeon, ABYC's Entertainment Chairs, for all their support and help with this event, as well as Bruce Hanna, Acting Club Manager, and Mike MacDonald, Vice-Commodore Member Services.

See you at launch!

Toonie Thursday Report - Diane Reid

Racing with Diane Reid

Last Thursday more than 70 members and guests turned out for Toonie Thursday to hear Diane talk about her experience as Skipper of Clipper Telemed in the Around the World Clipper Yacht Race. This race is the longest ocean race where 12 competitors compete in 70 foot Clippers with crews ranging from 14 to as many as 23 in some legs.

Diane's entire crew was comprised of 64 members all who had to complete a four level training program before the start of the race. Our own Andy Levy was a member of Diane's crew who completed the training program and was slated to race in the recently completed leg that ended in Seattle over the weekend. Andy had to withdraw because of a back injury but he says he is looking at possibly racing in 2017/18 when the race is next run.

Diane skippered the first two legs which covered more than 9,200 miles. In the first leg she finished 7th out of 12 and in the second race she finished 5th. A Tip of the Hat to Diane for these fine performances.

The highlights of Diane's presentation were two videos which were recorded by a Planet TV reporter who was a member of Diane's crew. These have both appeared on TV and may possibly be seen in the future as repeats. One of the highlights of the videos was watching Diane's 70 year old woman crew member going up the mast. An inspiration to all older sailors.

Once again, a great presentation by Diane that raised $176.40 for the Junior Sailing Program

Our last Toonie Thursday will be May 12 with Wendy Loat presenting Racing Rules and how to stay out of trouble on the race course.

Today is your last chance to submit your ABYC Member Survey as the survey closes tonight.

Thank you to all who completed one. This is an easy thing to do, yet it contributes greatly to the ongoing success of our club. The participation rate is rising but we still need more submissions to get a healthy representation.

An invitation was emailed to all members on April 14 (From: vcplan@abyc.on.ca Subject: ABYC Member Survey). If you didn't get one, or had any difficulty accessing it, please let me know. Or, if you are aware of any other stumbling blocks to completing a survey, we need to know that as well.

This really is a valuable and efficient way for you to provide feedback to your club. I can't think of a reason to miss out.

Toonie Thursday, May 12 - Wendy Loat

Using the Rules to Your Advantage: Rules You Need to Know to Win

Wendy Loat, Canadian National Judge, will cover the rules many sailors get wrong, and will talk about what to do if you either protest or have been protested, including strategies to win when a protest goes to hearing.

We will keep the evening light but informative. If you own a rule book, please bring it. If you don't, you'd better not miss this talk (download the rules to your tablet or phone via this link). You can also purchase the book for $10 here.

This is our last Toonie Thursday for the 2015-2016 season. Whether you are a seasoned racer or new to racing, this will be an informative and educational evening with one of Canada's top National Judges.

Race Committee 2016

I usually wait until the boats are in the water but I'm already starting to get inquiries, much to my delight, so let's get on with it.

We have another full schedule this year and the hunt for volunteers is officially on. Below is a list of the events for which we will be needing RC crews. To all our new members out there, senior and associate alike, please consider giving it a try. For those who don't have a boat on which to crew in a race or regatta, but want to be involved, Race Committee is an excellent way to be part of the season's activities. With the occasional exception, experience is not essential. We specialize in on-the-job training and will gladly show you how things work. All that is required is the ability to pay attention and follow instructions.

Here is what we're doing this year

Cruising

May Cruises
Cruise to Southwall - Saturday, May 7
Hosts: Kate Driscoll & Cam Jackson (Wave)
AKA Southwall Chili-fest. Registration is not required for this cruise.

Lakeshore Yacht Club - Saturday, May 21, to Monday, May 23
Hosts: Carolyn & Ralph Weckesser (Latis) / Jamie Donaldson & Joyce Guest  (Aleta Azul)
This is a 3 day/2 night cruise. We will not make arrangements for members who wish to attend for only one night. A wait list will be started after a few more registrations have been received. The limit is expected to be increased closer to the date of the cruise.

Etobicoke Yacht Club - Saturday, May 28 & Sunday, May 29
Hosts: David & Joanne Wright (Mermaid) / Kim & Stefan Cloer (Sea N Stars)
Cannot make the Southwall Chili-fest or the May long-weekend cruise to LSYC? Then set your sails for Etobicoke YC on May 28-29. At approximately 19 nautical miles away, it will give you a good opportunity for your first 'shakedown' cruise and get you to back into the swing of things.

Cruise Registration
In case you missed it, the 'how to register' for a cruise registration has changed to on-line registration on our website (http://abyc.on.ca/)

The Six Steps to Registration
  • LOGIN.
  • Run the cursor over Cruising on the header to open the drop down box.
  • Click on Cruising Signup.
  • Select the cruise you wish to register for and click on the Signup button. If the button is not displayed, registration is either closed or not yet open. Check the cruise description.
  • Complete the Registration Form. After registering for your first cruise, the information for subsequent cruise registrations will auto fill. Attendee numbers must be updated each time.
  • Once completed, click Register.
The Cruising Sign-up Page
  • The Cruising Sign-up page includes cruises:
    • that have closed but have not yet been completed;
    • with registration open;
    • whose registration opening date is pending.
  • Each cruise includes a description of the cruise, hosts, cancellation contact information, sign-up start date, boat limit, and a link to (1) the Host Club and (2) the Registrant List.
  • A message will display if the limit has been reached and a 'wait list' is in effect.
  • A cruise is open for registration if the 'SIGN-UP' button is displayed. If a cruise has been closed this information will be included in the cruise description.
The Registrant List
We are also paperless. The signup list is no longer posted in the Communications Room. The list includes all members who are registered for that cruise. The list is date stamped at the bottom and is updated regularly.

NOTE: While the member registration process is electronic, the submitted registration information is processed manually and errors can be made, therefore all members who register for a cruise are responsible for checking the Registrant List a week after registering to make sure that their registration is included on the list and that their information is complete (e.g., number in party). Members are requested to report errors and/or omissions to the Cruising Captains (cruising@abyc.on.ca).

Friendly Reminders

 To Senior and Life Members
By now you should have all received your final pre-launch invoice. Many folks have paid already, and I expect the overwhelming majority will have paid by the invoice due date of April 20.

I have committed to the crane and railway supervisors that I will advise them by Thursday, April 28 if there are any boats that we will not be launching due to non-payment so that they can adequately plan for a safe and efficient launch. Therefore, final date for payment will be Wednesday, April 27. There will be no office staff accepting payments on launch weekend. Payments can be made by cheque, debit, credit card (in person or over the phone), or email money transfer.

As a self-help club, it is anticipated that each Member will pay their invoices when due.  However, if you absolutely cannot pay in full, please contact me at vcfinance@abyc.on.ca with an outline of the extenuating circumstances and a committed plan for payment. Once again, this window is open until Wednesday, April 27.

Dock Crew Looking for New Recruits!
The Launch 'Dock Crew' Has Opportunities for New Recruits

The Dock Crew is one part of a large and detailed Launch operation. At Launch, the primary Dock Crew welcomes and assists boat owners to tie up in their slips for the first time in a new season. The team also includes members stationed near the launching areas (two cranes and rail) to make sure owners are standing by while their boats are being launched, and to announce your 'splashdown' to ensure there is someone to greet you at your slip. Our crew also includes the public address system announcer.

This team is integral to making the launch, and in the fall the haul out, operations run smoothly, efficiently, and safely. Your cooperation with our team is greatly appreciated and, in particular, please install your mooring lines prior to launching!

We are recruiting new members for this crew for 2016. No offence to the tradition and history of the term 'Dock Lady' but, in an effort to recruit new team members of both sexes, we are 're-branding'!  If for any reason you are unable to contribute at Launch on some of the other teams, you are most welcome to join our crew! No technical skills are needed, just enthusiasm and the ability to spend a half-day or more on your feet, helping secure boats on the docks.

Anyone interested in joining our team, please contact me at ABYCDockCrew@gmail.com for additional details.
