What an amazing Cruising kick off evening! The Captains, thanks to the involvement of many hosts, are taking our cruising program to new heights this season.

We are only two weeks away from our next General Meeting and then it's Boating Season!!!  I have two important messages for you today...

Monday, April 25 - General Meeting at 7:00 PM
I'd like to remind all members that attending General Meetings is important to our process of engagement. A General Meeting must have a minimum of 25% of the membership present in person or by proxy in order to be official. That's about 70-80 members present. So please plan on attending however if you are unable then give your proxy to someone so they may represent you at the meeting. You may submit a proxy to a specified board member if you wish them to act on your behalf too.

Vision Survey
Our Vice Commodore Planning Bob Brew has been busy reviewing past club surveys and building a new survey that will kick off later this week. This is your opportunity to give the board input and feedback that will guide strategic and operational decisions. Please carefully read his message in this issue of S2S and participate by completing the Vision Survey. Over to you.......

The all day work party last weekend was something to behold. Wheel barrows with stone, welding and cutting the new sea wall. Families pitching in to fix the east fence and clean the mast crane area and many more fix up, clean up projects. Thanks to everyone who participated. By the way, there is still much to do before launch and in the month following to get ABYC in shape for the sailing season. Find a project or see Sue our coordinator of work parties.

See you at the club.

Members Survey

By the end of this week, I will be sending all members an email invitation to participate in our ABYC Member Survey. Most members will recall the last survey was successful in highlighting areas of strength around the club as well as those requiring attention. Similarly, the purpose of this survey is to get member opinions on key areas of club operations. These opinions will help with policy decisions and to prioritize initiatives. It will also contribute toward building our Club's Long Term Plan.

I encourage you to complete the survey as soon as you get it but no later than Wednesday, April 20. It's short and shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to complete.

Under three weeks to launch and you wouldn't know it by looking at the yard. It's going to be a pretty busy place for those three weeks. To that end, the club's food service will go to summer hours starting on the 18th of the month. Check the website for the new hours. Oh ya, website.. shortly after launch the website will have a refreshed look and easier navigation. Kate Driscoll has been working on this for the last few months and I look forward to the roll out. Thanks Kate!

Also close to launch will be the roll out of the new wine menu. Dave Cloutier and a very dedicated group of individuals did extensive testing and have come up with four new red and white house wines. Our new format will be 6 and 9 ounce pours. New will be the reserve list, a selection of wines that will be available only by the bottle. The costing of this list will be our cost (which is a bit higher than you buy at the LCBO) plus $13.27 which is our corkage fee. This list will change often. On it in the beginning will be some of our present house wines until they run out. As we prepare to stock up for the new menu, we will run down our existing inventory. Toward the end of the month we may run out of some of the wines on the present list.

Now for the news that any VC Member Services person hates to say, we will be having some price increases on our beverage menu. We have not had any increases in almost two years and, with the recent price increases from the provincial boards, we will be increasing some of our prices.

Lots of events coming up in the next few weeks; Spring Fling, Toonie Thursday, and a General Meeting, I look forward to seeing you at the club!

Disposal of Used Shrink-Wrap

For the members' convenience, a special bin for disposal of shrink-wrap has been placed near the north-west corner of the Harbour.

It has come to my attention that some members toss loose, unbundled shrink-wrap into the bin. This is not an efficient use of space. The proper way to dispose of used shrink-wrap is to cut it in 4' to 5' wide strips, roll it up tightly and put a tie around the roll. This way we maximize the use of the bin and reduce the overall disposal cost.

If members continue to throw unbundled shrink-wrap into the bin, an additional bin will be required, effectively doubling the Club's disposal cost.

Your cooperation in this matter is appreciated!

Work Party - Saturday
What a great turnout to last week's Spring All Day Work Party!

Too bad about the spring part though. It was really too cold to do any painting jobs or much serious gardening work. We did manage to accomplish a lot; we had 80+ people come down to the club to pitch in. We made lots of progress on the white wall, cleaned and polished the inside of the club house, and did lots of clean up on the grounds. The lunch buffet was fantastic too!  Kudos to the kitchen!!

Just a word about tire lines. For various reasons, not all of the tire lines could be attached:
  1. The tires around the first branches of red and green are not in place yet so we could not tell which tire was the right one to which the line could be attached.
  2. The lines given by the member did not meet minimum requirements (yes there are standards LOL). For example, chain length was not long enough, shackles were missing, etc.
  3. My seemingly bullet-proof methodology of identifying the member lines via yellow sticky notes did not really provide the results we were looking for, and some of them sadly blew off. (I can relate to how Jordan Spieth felt on the 12th hole at the Masters when I watched with disbelief the sticky notes floating into the water).
Anyhoo, all the lines that could not be attached for any of the above reasons are in the communications room. Please go and retrieve them and we will try it again on the 23rd.

Coming up this Saturday, we need to continue work on the white wall:
  1. Backfill the white wall trench with gravel.
  2. We also need to fill gravel in the site where the contractor machinery was sitting by the sailing school launch.
  3. We need to fill several holes with gravel by coatsworth's cut - safety issue.
  4. We need the welders & helpers to finish the cap rail.
  5. Start reattaching the finger docks (this will probably not start this Saturday)
We can also continue to clean up the grounds.  And, if the weather is sunny and the temperature is over 10C and will stay that way for a few days, the rail around the patio can be painted with Tremclad.

I cannot be there this Saturday, but let's keep the momentum going and finish up the jobs before launch!

Sue Hamilton
 Big Thanks to Work Party
A Big thanks to all who turned out for the all day spring work party on Saturday. A lot was accomplished but, as we saw, there is so much to be done. A list has been drawn up of all of the immediate work to be done but the ground is still frozen and we are awaiting the $ amount that we will be allotted. This is going to be a tight financial year for us on the grounds so a lot of pruning, cleaning, and splitting of the existing plants are probably a good idea.

If there are any members who have too many plants at home and are willing to donate, I would be very interested in knowing about it.

We are open to all and any suggestions. A long list of major projects was drawn up on Saturday and Sue Hamilton has a summary. Until we know what our operating budget will be, it is difficult to know where to start.

Thanks again for all of the helpers.

Don & Liz MacIntyre Recognized by CORK

It was my great pleasure to attend the CORK Annual General Meeting held April 2 at the Kingston Yacht Club. Our own Liz and Don MacIntyre's volunteer race management work was celebrated and recognized with the Douglas A. Heath Award. I quote from the presentation:

Douglas Austin Heath was a long time volunteer with the CORK regatta. His involvement included being on the Board of Directors and Executive, administration of Opening and Closing Ceremonies, long term developments and much more. In his honour, the Douglas A Heath Award is presented annually, when appropriate, at CORK. In deciding upon a recipient, the Award selection committee considers a volunteer's involvement, level of commitment, type of contribution, and length of involvement. It is intended that the involvement be of a quality comparable to that of Douglas A. Heath.

Don and Liz MacIntyre have given a tremendous amount of their time and energy to the sport of sailing. Don was instrumental in getting the Toronto area Clubs and Race Officials to come to CORK and for many years the Sarah Ashbridge and a mark boat were brought to Kingston to help with the event. They have become fixtures at CORK in a variety of roles from judging to recording finishes to being the RO for many of CORK's championships and the Jury Secretary. Their unwavering support for CORK during the off season has brought many new faces to Kingston. Their support is recognized by the presentation of the Douglas Heath Award, the highest honour CORK can bestow, as testament to their continuing support and service to CORK.

I congratulate Liz and Don for this recognition, their tremendous contributions to CORK, and the high level of competition they supported there, and for so well representing ABYC at that organization for so many years!  I have had the opportunity to work with and learn from both of them at CORK and at ABYC, and they have truly made a remarkable contribution.

 To Senior and Life Members

By now you should have all received your final pre-launch invoice. Many folks have paid already, and I expect the overwhelming majority will have paid by the invoice due date of April 20.

I have committed to the crane and railway supervisors that I will advise them by Thursday, April 28 if there are any boats that we will not be launching due to non-payment so that they can adequately plan for a safe and efficient launch. Therefore, final date for payment will be Wednesday, April 27. There will be no office staff accepting payments on launch weekend. Payments can be made by cheque, debit, credit card (in person or over the phone), or email money transfer.

As a self-help club, it is anticipated that each Member will pay their invoices when due.  However, if you absolutely cannot pay in full, please contact me at vcfinance@abyc.on.ca with an outline of the extenuating circumstances and a committed plan for payment. Once again, this window is open until Wednesday, April 27.

 Sail Trim 101 Report

Thanks to Brian Chapman for presenting  Sail Trim 101  at ABYC on Thursday, April 7, sponsored by the Learn to Sail Program. An estimated 80 plus members turned out to learn about sail trim from one of the masters. Brian is Sail Designer at UK Sailmakers Toronto and a long term ABYC member.
Since attendance at the seminar far exceeded our expectations we did not have enough copies of the presentation hand out package available. If you would like a copy, please click here.

 In-Water Winter Lay-Up

Ad Hoc Meeting on In-Water Winter Lay-Up

As most club members know, four vessels from our ABYC fleet wintered in our harbour this year;  Trinity, Feisty Lady, Day Dream II, and Cheri. The accompanying photo was taken on February 12, 2016 during a cold snap. Some ice can be seen in the left foreground.

Several different approaches were taken to de-icing protocols and to winter cover. The In-Water Winter Lay-Up Committee is pleased to report that none of the boats is known to have suffered any ill consequences from staying in the water. The committee and its members will be meeting to discuss the experiences of its members, and to begin preparation of a formal report to the Senior VC Marine Services and the Board.

The Committee would like to take this opportunity to invite any member interested in winter lay-up in the future to sit in on the meeting to be held this coming Saturday, 16 April between noon and 1:00 PM.

The In-Water Winter Lay-Up Committee

Dock Crew Looking for New Recruits!

The Launch 'Dock Crew' Has Opportunities for New Recruits

The Dock Crew is one part of a large and detailed Launch operation. At Launch, the primary Dock Crew welcomes and assists boat owners to tie up in their slips for the first time in a new season. The team also includes members stationed near the launching areas (two cranes and rail) to make sure owners are standing by while their boats are being launched, and to announce your 'splashdown' to ensure there is someone to greet you at your slip. Our crew also includes the public address system announcer.

This team is integral to making the launch, and in the fall the haul out, operations run smoothly, efficiently, and safely. Your cooperation with our team is greatly appreciated and, in particular, please install your mooring lines prior to launching!

We are recruiting new members for this crew for 2016. No offence to the tradition and history of the term 'Dock Lady' but, in an effort to recruit new team members of both sexes, we are 're-branding'!  If for any reason you are unable to contribute at Launch on some of the other teams, you are most welcome to join our crew! No technical skills are needed, just enthusiasm and the ability to spend a half-day or more on your feet, helping secure boats on the docks.

Anyone interested in joining our team, please contact me at ABYCDockCrew@gmail.com for additional details.

Cruising Season Review & Kickoff Party

A huge crowd gathered at ABYC on Friday night for the Cruising Kickoff Party, despite the unseasonably cold April temperatures and early morning flurries. It is obvious that everyone is ready for the fun and games of the Cruising Season to begin.

The kitchen and bar staff did a great job. In total, there were 95 reservations for dinner and many more members arrived later. There was a nice mix of seasoned cruisers, new members, and 'new to cruising' members. Lots of kids were also in attendance and they were thrilled to have their own 'kid' table. Everyone seemed to enjoy their dinners and mingling with others, as we all getting excited about the upcoming Cruising Season.

Chris Pappas introduced all of the scheduled 2016 Cruises and their hosts. We will have an opportunity to visit many clubs this season and there is something for everyone.

Nancy Ogden took us through the new online registration process that you can access through the ABYC website. Online registration is available the first Wednesday of the month before each cruise - don't miss out.

Ron Boudah spoke briefly about an opportunity to do some fun racing and man over board drills on a few of the cruises.

Lastly, there was a raffle for a copy of the 2016 Lake Ontario Ports Guide, donated by the editors of the Ports Guide. Howard Franklin (Beaucoup) was the lucky winner. Additional Ports Guides were sold at a one time (Friday evening only) low price. Thank you to the editors of the Ports Guide for the free copy, Mike McDonald of the Rigging shop for providing the sale copies, and Petra Fisher for organizing this.

We are looking forward to an amazing cruising season! Hoping to see everyone at the first cruise - The South Wall Cruise on May 7.

Boat Registration
I was tempted to put this next line all in capitals but that would make me seem excitable. So in a very reserved but still passionate sense, WE WANT YOU to race in our club's regatta in May. I will be expanding on this race registration theme in the next few weeks but we have implemented an EARLY REGISTRATION 'Incentives' effort and that date is to have you register your boat to race by May 13. Come on, you can do it.

And quite specifically, while we are not taking any racer or rating class for granted, we do want to emphasize the effort to entice our weeknight racers. I will reiterate that with the regatta format change this year, in addition to One-Design and IRC competitors, we welcome all PHRF boats including FS (flying sails) and NFS (non-flying sails) racers to come out and simply enjoy either the track course competition on Saturday, and/or the new sponsored edition of the Great Lakes Offshore Challenge! distance race on Sunday. Both days will be fantastic racing. Such choices!

If you do race weeknights but didn't have plans to come out, let me ask you to reconsider. I have meteorologists on payroll that have guaranteed the weather so that's taken care of. And with the no flying sails category this year, you can get a great start on shaking the boat out with some interesting competition without having to run a full crew complement (3 minimum as per SI's), or just seeing what you need to adjust for your season. It's the ideal season starter race and great party all at once.

I know April has thrown a last little tantrum but, as of today, we are all good. Plan a different start this year, focus on getting your boat ready to go, and let's all join our own ABYC party. Go to the ABYC website and get the details, then click the LORC link to register for the OPEN. You'll be glad you did.

Cruising

Club Cruising Program 2016
This season we have scheduled 14 cruises and two 1000 Islands Rendezvous' (July and August)! We have a lot to cover to bring everyone up to speed with changes and the May cruise schedule. We will not be able to cover all in one issue so stay tuned! In upcoming issues we will continue to cover program enhancements and provide cruising information.

2016 Changes to Cruise Registration

When to Register
CHANGED
Cruise registration will open on the first Wednesday of the month before the month of the cruise at 00:01 AM. Registration will remain open until 11:59 PM Tuesday (three days/72 hours) before the cruise but may be closed earlier if a wait list is in effect.

Where to Register
NEW
Members will self-register for cruises using the Cruising Signup page on the ABYC website.

NOTE: Cruise registration will no longer be accepted by office staff (phone or e-mail) and members will no longer be able to register directly on a cruise list in the Communications Room.

The Six Steps to Registration
  • LOGIN.
  • Run the cursor over Cruising on the header to open the drop down box.
  • Click on Cruising Signup.
  • Select the cruise you wish to register for and click on the Signup button. If the button is not displayed, registration is either closed or not yet open. Check the cruise description.
  • Complete the Registration Form. After registering for your first cruise, the information will for subsequent cruise registrations will auto fill. Attendee numbers must be updated each time.
  • Once completed, click on Register.

If you have completed the registration properly, a message will display (on your screen) 'Your registration has been successfully received'.

You will receive an email that contains your registration information. If there are errors in the information, please reply and advise the Cruising Captains of the correct information.
This email will not confirm your status on the cruise list.

DO NOT REGISTER FOR THE SAME CRUISE A SECOND TIME OR GO BACK AND CORRECT YOUR REGISTRATION INFORMATION ONLINE, AS THIS WILL OVERWRITE YOUR FIRST REGISTRATION.

A tutorial copy of the registration method has been posted on the bulletin board in the Communications Room. If you would like a copy of this tutorial sent to you please email us.

May Cruise Registration has opened

Cruise to Southwall - May 7
Hosts: Kate Driscoll & Cam Jackson (Wave)
This season's opening cruise is hosted on the public docks on the south shore of the Club's harbour. Members are invited to 'cruise' their boats (mast/boom/sails optional) or dinghies over to the dock. Associate members are welcome. The area is accessible by land through the park (walk or bike). Who will win the 2016 'Chili Champion' bragging rights? Registration is not required for this cruise. Members who attend the cruise by boat (dinghies do not qualify) receive their first 'cruise attendance credit'.

Lakeshore Yacht Club - May 21, 22, 23

Hosts: Carolyn & Ralph Weckesser (Latis) / Jamie Donaldson & Joyce Guest  (Aleta Azul)

This is a 3 day/2 night cruise. We will not make arrangements for members who wish to attend for only one night.  All of our slips will be needed to accommodate the incoming LSYC fleet. This is a 'boat for boat' exchange but we hope to be able to accommodate all boats. To avoid member disappointment, we may start a wait list pending confirmation of the number of slips that will be available at LSYC. Even if there is a wait list, please do not hesitate to register.
Some members have asked why we have selected the LSYC as the first cruise destination and we have to say this decision was strategic. Being early in the season when weather can be unpredictable, this location provides us with shelter in the clubhouse and it was the only club available that offers use of their clubhouse on this weekend.

Etobicoke Yacht Club - May 28, 29
Hosts: David & Joanne Wright (Mermaid) / Kim & Stefan Cloer (Sea N Stars)
We are getting boats out of the harbour to make room for the incoming regatta boats. All boats will be accommodated either at EYC or Mimico Cruising Club (a short walk across a parking lot to EYC). The reception will be held at EYC.

Further cruise details will be posted by the hosts in upcoming S2S issues. We thank you for your support and look forward to seeing you at a cruise.

Wishing all a safe sailing season,

Chris Pappas / Nancy Ogden / Ron & Cindy Boudah
